Summary: The President/CEO is responsible for United Way of St. Joseph County’s 
(UWSJC) mission and has the authority, within the framework of the UWSJC’s plans, 
policies, and Bylaws, to take necessary action to perform the job responsibilities. The 
CEO will manage the entire operation of UWSJC within the guidelines of the annual 
budget as adopted by the Board of Directors with emphasis on maintaining a balanced 
operation. The President has special responsibility for guarding against waste of 
resources provided by contributors and plays a key role in resource generation for the 
organization. 

 
Duties and Responsibilities: 

Strategic 

 • Provide vision and strategic insight to the Board for fulfilling the mission of the 
organization, utilizing input from multiple sources, including external and internal 
constituents. 

 • Ensure that the Board has access to all information needed to carry out its 
governance responsibilities. 

 • Develop an annual business plan to report on progress in achieving goals. 
 • Identify new opportunities to build partnerships with a broad and diverse group 

of external constituents and leverage resources in an effort to maximize impact. 
 • Partner with external organizations to encourage the exchange of information 

and the building of collaborations. 
 • Participate in external meetings, councils, forums, etc. to ensure UWSJC has 

the most current and relevant information to use in decision-making. 

Leadership 

 • Foster a working culture that reflects respect, transparency, and trust. 
 • Lead by example in creating a workplace that provides employees with the 

safety to be their authentic selves.

 • Advance the mission and image of the organization by serving as the chief 
representative to all internal and external stakeholders, including the Board, 
staff, local nonprofits, donors, the media, government, and the general public. 

 • Oversee the ongoing development and operation of neighborhood centers to 
maximize traction and leverage for UWSJC and its community partners to 
achieve high-level impact results. 

 • Represent the interests of all health and human service nonprofits through 
advocacy efforts designed to educate corporate and government representatives 
on community needs. 

 • Leverage impact by supporting and encouraging partnerships and collaborations 
between local non-profits. 

 • Ability to speak in a way that moves large and small groups to action. 
 • Champion innovative approaches towards solving community issues. 

 Development 

 • Work with staff to plan and implement strategic initiatives to achieve community 
impact and reach fundraising goals. 

 • Directly solicit a portfolio of corporate and leadership level givers and prospects 
with an emphasis on investments in Community Impact. 

 • Cultivate relationships with members of the Board and obtain individual 
contributions. 

 • Identify and develop new partnerships and potential revenue generation 
opportunities. 

Governance 

 • Provide direct staff support to the Board Governance and Nominating committee 
and report regularly to the Board on the activities of the organization and 
progress toward meeting annual plan goals and strategic objectives. 

 • Ensure Board members are kept informed of matters and developments that 
warrant their attention and best practices on organizational management and 
leadership. 

 • Identify issues and policies that require the action of the Board. 
 • Develop board meetings that allow the members to fulfill their operational 

responsibilities, but also to provide the opportunity for strategic discussion on 
organizational imperatives. 

Administrative and Management 

 • Establish a culture which ensures that the organization attracts and retains the 
talent necessary to successfully carry out its programs and mission. 


 • Manage staff assuring that adequate training, support, and resources are in 
place to achieve goals with a focus on a coaching culture. 

 • Ensure that the organization operates within the financial parameters set by the 
Board, and that available resources are distributed appropriately. 

 • Provide the fiscal oversight for the organization’s investments, budgets, and 
financial reporting. 

 • Ensures that UWSJC meets legal obligations and complies with membership 
requirements of United Way Worldwide. 

 
Neighborhood Center Initiative (NCI) Leadership 

 • Convene and lead collective impact work around the Neighborhood Centers 
owned by UWSJC. 

 • Proactively manage capital investment in and expenses of the Neighborhood 
Center Initiative (NCI) to ensure construction budgets and timelines are met. 

 • Develop a detailed project plan to monitor and track progress and meet 
deadlines related to the construction process. 

 • Communicate with UWSJC leadership and key Neighborhood Center partners to 
keep the project aligned with goals and priorities of the NCI. 

 • Ensure operational efficiency which includes reviewing budgets and financial 
projections and adjusting as needed at each unique Neighborhood Center 
location. 

 • Develop and implement strategies, procedures and business plans needed to 
enhance continued growth of the NCI.

 • Strong relationship building and donor cultivation experience with proven 

results in resource generation.

The Buncombe County Long-Term Recovery Group (BCLTRG) Disaster Case Management Lead works with contracted Disaster Case Management (DCM) agencies, the Case Management Committee and Chair, to lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the BCLTRG Case Management Program, ensuring survivors receive the support they need while helping DCM agencies succeed.&nbsp;As the BCLTRG Disaster Case Management Lead, you’ll play a critical role in guiding and strengthening a collaborative, survivor-centered disaster recovery program - turning a strategic vision into operational reality. Rather than directly supervising case managers, you’ll work closely with multiple community agencies, helping them build capacity, align efforts, and deliver high-quality services to impacted households.
