This position oversees United Way’s initiative, Mission United, that engages community 
partners to support our region’s military-connected individuals on customized journeys to self-
sufficiency. The Director is tasked with building relationships and growing Mission United’s 
network of service providers, connecting clients to affordable housing, job training, health care 
and other resources through online care-coordination software. Of the over 400,000 military-
connected people living in Hampton Roads, Mission United’s target population includes: 
active-duty service members (including the Reserves and National Guard), military retirees, 
military spouses and dependents, caregivers and veterans. It is the role of the Director of 
Mission United to spearhead the engagement of diverse stakeholder groups that guide 
mission, vision, and strategy, as well as support aligned activities and shared measurements, 
build public will and community engagement, advance policy, and mobilize funding.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 


 
Administrative &amp; Financial Management 
 • Coordinates, gathers, and support internal staff and consultants when needed to 

develop successful proposals and investment opportunities. 
 • Create, read, and understand budgets and other financial reports, including drawing 

conclusions regarding the financial impact of product/program development and 
implementation. 

 • Support reporting requirements for funders cross-functionally with CI, RD, and 
Operations to ensure timely and accurate reporting 

 • Provide oversite of call centers and initiatives related to Mission United 
 • Develop and maintain protocols and/or policies regarding the operations of the Mission 

United Call center. 
 • Function as a trusted advisor to the Community Impact department head in helping to 

guide strategic direction for community investments and the creation of programs and 
services. 

 • Lead and build the talent of staff specifically aligned to family stability. Give constructive 
feedback, coach, and mentor employees to achieve high performance and results. 

 • Conduct/Ensure all training requirements for staff are met, including re-certifications. 
 • Support and promote the development of positive team relationships. 

 
Community Collaboration 
 • Represent UWSHR at external events and ensure collaborative community relationships, as 

 needed.

both inside and outside the United Way network.

Program Development &amp; Implementation 
 • Provides effective leadership to team peers and team members through team meetings,

products and Initiatives, as well as products and services that are new and useful.

Marketing and Resource Development and Outreach

MKTG professionals to turn into stories, reports, and powerful messages to engage donors. 
 • Participates in campaign and donor engagement by presenting and attending donor visits 

with RD; Provides return on investment information for donors that is articulated and 
succinct. 

 • Actively participates in projects, special events, cross-functional teams, or workgroups that 
support the work of the entire organization. 

 • Engage UWSHR staff and volunteers to achieve goals related to programming and funding, 
fundraising, and communications. 

 • Identify and cultivate individual, corporate, government, and foundations in collaboration 
with United Way’s Resource Development team to increase resources supporting Mission 
United’s mission and services.

Key Skills Requirements: 

 • Bachelor’s Degree in related field required; master’s degree preferred 
 • 5-10 years relevant military experience (as service member or in a civilian capacity); 

prior military service preferred; seeking candidates with strategic planning, program

 • Familiarity with asset-based approaches to community development, volunteerism,

Objectives &amp; Expectations 
Reporting to the Senior Major Gifts Officer, the Major Gifts Officer (MGO) will manage a portfolio of high 
level current and prospective donors and will be expected to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and 
steward these individuals and corporations. The MGO is expected to spend time in the field meeting 
and interfacing with key constituents and prospects in order to identify capacity with a goal of increasing 
the number of new donors and elevating current donors to greater gift levels. This successful candidate 
needs to be a forward thinking, experienced fundraising professional who can be a highly collaborative 
member of the Resource Development team and close partner to our outstanding volunteers and 
executive leadership teams. 

 
Core Job Responsibilities 

 Work closely with the Senior Major Gifts Officer to determine key metrics, accountability and 
reporting mechanisms aligned with performance, and set goals toward growth 

 Successfully manage a portfolio of high-level donors

UWCNCT is seeking a dynamic, mission-driven Chief Philanthropy Officer who will understand the community and foster relationships with a wide range of constituents. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Philanthropy Officer will be part of the senior management team. The Director of Volunteer Engagement at United Way of Greenville County (UWGC) leads the strategic

Positions United Way as the primary philanthropic conduit between companies, the communities in which they reside and operate, and individuals through the development of year-round engagement experiences.PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES<ul><li>Maintain close, positive relationships with the key accounts in the assigned portfolio throughout the year, including planning and oversight of the accounts’ annual United Way campaign – focusing on building and maintaining effective relationships.</li><li>Be a passionate advocate of UWSA mission and be able to advocate amongst our corporate partners and their employees.</li><li>Oversee employee giving campaigns and creates meaningful growth through best practice strategies to grow participation and average gifts.</li><li>Work with the Individual Giving team to coordinate donor cultivation of individuals within the workplace who have potential to give major gifts.</li><li>Strategic engagement of companies year-round through implementation of specific donor/corporate engagement strategies in partnership with overall Development team, Community Engagement, Marketing, and/or Volunteerism.</li><li>Develop strategies to identify, cultivate, and steward current and potential leadership donors (gifts of $500 or more) within workplace campaigns.</li><li>Work with portfolio of corporations, corporate champions, and internal stakeholders to create revenue growth strategies for each account, informed by targeted research and the company’s CSR focus.</li><li>Assist volunteer identification, recruitment, training, retention, and advancement.</li><li>In partnership with corporate partners, create a donor engagement strategy targeted at returning, new, lapsing, and lapsed donors.</li><li>Consistently document key conversations with prospects, donors, and corporate partners into UWSA’s customer management database (CRM).</li><li>Strong attention to detail and focus on updating campaign and individual donor information in CRM including, but not limited to, corporate contact(s), employee count, UWSA involvement, company processing information, engagement practices, campaign start/end dates, etc.</li><li>Maintain solid understanding of United Way programs and initiatives.&nbsp;</li><li>Work with colleagues across the organization to develop customized giving proposals for key donors who may have an interest in funding a particular initiative.</li><li>Develop relationships with the finance and administration staff to ensure that information on campaign reports is provided in a timely and accurate manner.</li><li>Monitor reports for actual and projected progress to goals for accounts within assigned portfolio and work with the Information Systems team to finalize.</li><li>Work with and manage Loaned Executives on the management of corporate campaigns and the interactions with company contacts.</li><li>Work with the VP, RD to streamline processes and improve ROI on all fundraising activities.</li><li>Willingly accept other ancillary or related assignments that will enhance the effectiveness of the corporation.</li></ul>EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE<ul><li>Bachelor’s degree – required in a related field of study.</li><li>A Minimum of 2 years of professional work experience desired, with one or more years of fundraising or sales experience preferred.&nbsp;</li><li>Experience in working effectively in multicultural environments.</li><li>Strong relationships in the nonprofit, public and private sectors.&nbsp;</li><li>Staff and volunteer management.&nbsp;</li><li>Experience in using virtual platforms for presentations and/or setting up virtual meetings.</li><li>Experience with CRM/database management preferred.&nbsp;</li></ul>KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS &amp;
