JOB CLASSIFICIATION
Senior Directors are people managers and functional staff experts. They contribute to the stated goals of UWCCR by providing strategic insights and concepts that support the core strategies of the business; by providing tactical management of staff (or contractors) with developed specialized knowledge; and/or functional expertise. This level requires a broad and comprehensive understanding of the different systems, theories, and practices relevant to multiple disciplines. Senior Directors understand multiple disciplines focused on the knowledge requirements to manage heterogeneous issues with multiple stakeholders in line with broader strategic considerations. This level requires a comprehensive understanding of several organization sub-functions and how their processes and resources achieve the functional objectives required.

Senior Directors possess knowledge of long-term challenges and changes in the nonprofit industry and how they relate to the organization. People leadership responsibility for a large group or several different employees in the organization, outside contractors, or functional oversight for employees at the member companies. They are responsible for ensuring team members are motivated and capable of delivering a professional service and a high level of performance through setting objectives, coaching employees in pursuit of those objectives, appraisal of performance relative to objectives and determination of reward outcomes. The work delivered relates to the external mission of the organization dealing with lawmakers, regulators, environmental groups, and other external stakeholders. This level is expected to establish strategic plans and/or operational programs that require a sound understanding of the underlying theories underpinning the disciplines.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Senior Director of Resource Development is responsible for leading and overseeing workplace campaign fundraising efforts, portions of individual giving fundraising, sponsorships and developing other revenue sources with a total revenue of approximately $6M - $7M. The Senior Director is responsible for overseeing existing workplace giving campaigns including the Our Promise: California State Employees Giving at Work Initiative. This campaign solicits more than 200,000 California State employees for charitable contributions raising between $4- $5M annually. The Senior Director is responsible for achieving or surpassing goals for donor participation for individual and major donors within a set portfolio and overseeing the donor portfolios of their team.

The Senior Director will also supervise a fundraising team dedicated to these efforts. Ultimately, this position is responsible for assuring UWCCR meets or exceeds fundraising goals.

The Senior Director is also responsible for assembling, staffing and training the various volunteer teams that manage the Our Promise campaign and for achieving or surpassing revenue goals and for meeting or exceeding customer/donor expectations for quality and account service within the state employee workplace giving campaign and others.

Workplace Campaign Management (50%)

  • Achieve targets for donor participation, total contributions and market penetration for team
  • Maintain and enhance relationships with assigned accounts to ensure their continued participation, support and satisfaction with UWCCR’s services.
  • Interfaces with the Finance and Operations Department on matters that include dealing with pledge processing, customer relationship management and donor designations.
  • Interface with the Impact Department on matters that include impact work, results, volunteer opportunities, etc.
  • Oversees all epledge campaigns and promotes this giving option to campaigns that are using other giving options
  • Develop and implement a Corporate Recognition Program.
  • Oversee the Our Promise: California State Employees Giving at Work Initiative – a state employee workplace giving campaign.
  • Achieve or surpass revenue goals for state employee workplace giving campaign.
  • Maintain relationships with campaign stakeholder groups including California United Way’s.
  • Mange the Leaders United volunteers and their 4 month+ appointment program with UWCCR.
  • Oversee online giving and record management.
  • Oversee the annual nonprofit certification process and ensure that all guidelines and processes are delivered.
  • Adhere to all guidelines set forth in the MOU with the Department of General Services that manages all aspects of the Our Promise Initiative.
  • Work together with appropriate regulatory agencies including the Department of Justice and the Department of General Services to ensure complete compliance with rules and regulations.
  • Develop and implement new strategies for donor recognition, sponsorships, retention and cultivation working with internal staff.

Sponsorship Management (20%)

  • Develop annual sponsorship strategy to meet or exceed fundraising goals.
  • Retain, grow and steward existing sponsorships
  • Oversee the development of a comprehensive sponsorship packet with expanded offerings
  • Identify and recruit new sponsors to United Way offerings
  • Work with Resource Development internal team to identify opportunities
  • Work with Resource Development committee to identify and secure new sponsorship prospects
  • Develop a broad understanding of other concepts and principles in context to resolve issues that have an impact beyond the Our Promise campaign.
  • Achieve an understanding of several organization sub-functions and how their processes and resources achieve the functional objectives required.

Supervisory (20%)

  • People leadership responsibility for a group or several different employees in the organization and outside contractors.
  • Assemble, staff, and supervise multiple team members.
  • Provide tactical management of staff (or contractors) with developed specialized knowledge and functional expertise.
  • Plan, monitor, and appraise job results by assigning tasks and supervising the progress of staff members.
  • Conduct trainings and implement and enforce systems, policies, and procedures.
  • Oversee portions of the RDMK budget and ensure accurate expenditures that comply with annual budget.
  • Maintains safe and healthy work environment by establishing and enforcing organization standards and adhering to legal regulations.
  • Contribute to the stated goals of UWCCR by providing strategic insights and concepts that support the core strategies of the business.

JOB SUMMARY

The Senior Director of Resource Development is responsible for leading and overseeing workplace campaign fundraising, individual giving, sponsorships, corporate giving, grants, and the development of diversified revenue sources totaling approximately $6 million annually. This role has direct accountability for measurable revenue growth, donor engagement, partnership expansion, and funding diversification, supported by clearly defined annual performance expectations.

The Senior Director oversees major workplace giving campaigns, including the Our Promise: California State Employees Giving at Work Initiative, which solicits more than 200,000 California State employees and generates $3.5M+ annually. The position is responsible for meeting or exceeding annual goals related to fundraising performance, donor retention, sponsorship and grant growth, campaign revitalization, and digital giving adoption.

This role supervises a fundraising team and collaborates closely with internal departments, volunteer leadership, and community partners to ensure UWCCR meets or exceeds fundraising and engagement goals. Success in this position requires a visible and active presence in the community, including participation in donor, sponsor, workplace, and partner events during the workday as well as evenings and weekends. Consistent external engagement and relationship‑building are essential components of effective development work and long‑term organizational sustainability.

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

The Senior Director of Resource Development is accountable for achieving annual fundraising, engagement, and partnership goals aligned with UWCCR’s strategic priorities. Performance is measured across the following areas:

  • Revenue & Fundraising Performance: Meet or exceed organizational revenue goals across workplace campaigns, individual giving, sponsorships, grants, corporate giving, and recurring revenue while maintaining strong donor retention.
  • Workplace Campaign & Partnership Growth: Expand, reinvigorate, and strengthen workplace campaigns through diversified engagement strategies, including sponsorships, grants, volunteer initiatives, collection drive partnerships, and digital enhancements.
  • Sponsorship & Corporate Giving: Acquire new corporate partners while retaining and growing existing relationships through strategic sponsorship and corporate giving initiatives.
  • Individual, Major, and Affinity Group Giving: Increase donor engagement and portfolio performance through targeted outreach, personalized stewardship, and meaningful relationship‑building activities.
  • Planned Giving: Strengthen the planned giving program through intentional prospect identification, cultivation, tracking, and donor engagement.
  • Monthly Giving: Grow and sustain the recurring donor program to support predictable, long-term revenue.

Footnote: Specific numeric targets, revenue thresholds, participation measures, and activity benchmarks for these KPIs are established annually and may be adjusted based on organizational priorities and performance outcomes.

Workplace Campaign & Partnership Management (40%)

  • Lead and manage workplace campaign fundraising strategies to achieve targets for participation, revenue, engagement, partner satisfaction, and digital adoption.
  • Oversee the Our Promise: California State Employees Giving at Work Initiative, ensuring:
    • Recruit volunteer leadership within state departments to oversee campaign
    • Compliance with the Department of General Services MOU
    • Coordination with the Department of Justice and other regulatory agencies
    • Coordination with the State Controller’s office on employee giving page and payroll donation interface and testing
    • Successful execution of the annual nonprofit certification process
    • Oversee all donor customer service activities
  • Expand workplace partnerships through diversified engagement strategies, including:
    • Sponsorships
    • Small grants
    • Volunteer initiatives
    • Collection drive partnerships
    • Digital giving enhancements
  • Reinvigorate underperforming or dormant campaigns through strategic outreach, presentations, stakeholder engagement, and customized campaign plans.
  • Manage Leaders United volunteers, including recruitment, onboarding, training, and oversight of the extended appointment program.
  • Drive adoption and optimization of electronic giving platform and oversee all online workplace giving platforms.
  • Collaborate cross‑functionally with:
    • Finance & Operations on pledge processing, CRM integrity, and reporting
    • Impact Department on storytelling, results communication, and volunteer experiences
  • Adapt campaign strategies to evolving nonprofit, workplace, and digital giving trends.

Sponsorship & Corporate Giving Management (25%)

  • Develop and implement an annual sponsorship and corporate giving strategy aligned with fundraising and engagement priorities.
  • Acquire new sponsorships while retaining and growing existing corporate partners through proactive cultivation and stewardship.
  • Oversee development and continuous improvement of comprehensive, tiered sponsorship offerings.
  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward corporate donors through workplace campaigns, events, volunteer engagement, and cause‑marketing opportunities.
  • Partner with the Resource Development Committee to identify prospects, facilitate outreach, support presentations, and strengthen relationship development.
  • Track sponsorship performance and ensure alignment with overall fundraising goals.

Supervisory & Leadership Responsibilities (25%)

  • Provide people leadership for fundraising staff and selected contractors.
  • Recruit, train, coach, and evaluate team members, setting clear expectations tied to organizational priorities and KPIs.
  • Provide tactical management to staff with specialized fundraising expertise.
  • Oversee assigned portions of the Resource Development & Marketing budget, ensuring fiscal responsibility and compliance.
  • Establish strategic plans and operational programs supporting UWCCR’s mission and long‑term sustainability.
  • Maintain a safe, inclusive, and compliant work environment.
  • Contribute strategic insights and recommendations to UWCCR’s leadership team.

Miscellaneous / Additional Duties (10%)

  • Support special projects and organizational initiatives as needed.
  • Represent UWCCR in external meetings, presentations, and community engagements related to fundraising and partnership development.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

DESIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Communications, Marketing or a related field.
  • 7-10 years of experience in these or related fields such as sales, ideally with 5-7 years of experience fundraising.
  • Experience developing and implementing successful fundraising initiatives.
  • Experience with account or client management.
  • Experience working with volunteer boards of directors and staffing board committees.
  • Experience recruiting and developing new company relationships.
  • Experience supervising and managing the performance of professional staff.
  • Experience working directly with donors on fundraising efforts.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Extensive oral communication with coworkers, potential donors, media, and the public in settings ranging from one-on-one to large groups including formal and informal presentations, training sessions and question and answer sessions, and by telephone.
  • Work in an office environment, lift and move objects up to 40 pounds, such as large binders, books, boxes, and small office equipment. If over 40 pounds, assistance will be provided.
  • Have sufficient finger/hand coordination and dexterity to operate and adjust office equipment such as telephone, computer, and calculator.
  • React quickly under high pressure settings.
  • Willingness to travel locally and overnight via plane, train, or private vehicle.
  • Ability to work irregular hours including evenings and weekends.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of an appropriate California operator’s license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles, and adequate automobile insurance; possession and maintenance of a good driving record (as evidenced by freedom from multiple or serious traffic violation for at least a two-year duration) that does not contribute to an increase in UWCCR insurance rates.
