The Early Literacy Fellow positions support several parts of the United Way of Northern Utah (UWNU) DYAD reading intervention tutoring program. The purpose of the program is to help elementary students develop foundational reading skills through a structured, research-based paired reading program. The fellows will play an important role in recruiting and retaining volunteers to provide tutoring to students with the goal of strengthening early literacy skills and moving closer to grade-level reading benchmarks. By supporting the development of supportive relationships and encouraging daily reading practice, fellows contribute to improved student confidence, academic success, and long-term educational outcomes.

As a Result of this Internship, Early Literacy Fellows will:

  • Recruit and train DYAD reading volunteers, and serve as a critical support throughout their volunteer experience
  • Experience implementing evidence-based literacy interventions
  • Learn and practice classroom and student engagement techniques
  • Learn data collection and gain educational support experience
  • Develop their understanding of early literacy development and intervention practices

This position works closely with students, school staff, and program coordinators to assist with recruiting, registering and providing support to tutors throughout the school year. This position is ideal for individuals pursuing careers in education, literacy, social work, psychology, child development, or related fields who are passionate about helping children succeed academically.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Recruit and retain an adequate number of student and adult volunteer tutors that will deliver the DYAD reading interventions
  • Provide training and orientation workshops to tutors before the start of the school year.
  • Provide intervention assistance to tutors during the tutoring sessions.
  • Assist the coordinator with ensuring tutors to complete their scheduled shifts and fulfill volunteer requirements.
  • Assist coordinator with teaching the tutors the DYAD method of reading intervention (which focuses on how to build fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and reading engagement).
  • Encourage positive reading habits and create a supportive learning environment for students
  • Track student participation, progress, and attendance as required by the program
  • Communicate professionally with teachers, site coordinators, and program staff
  • Participate in required trainings, team meetings, and professional development opportunities

Qualifications

  • Interest in education, literacy, youth development, or community impact work
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work patiently and positively with elementary-age students
  • Dependable, organized, and able to maintain confidentiality
  • Must successfully complete any required background checks and training
  • Must have access to reliable transportation throughout Weber County
  • Previous experience in literacy or reading intervention is a bonus
