This position oversees United Way’s initiative, Mission United, that engages community 
partners to support our region’s military-connected individuals on customized journeys to self-
sufficiency. The Director is tasked with building relationships and growing Mission United’s 
network of service providers, connecting clients to affordable housing, job training, health care 
and other resources through online care-coordination software. Of the over 400,000 military-
connected people living in Hampton Roads, Mission United’s target population includes: 
active-duty service members (including the Reserves and National Guard), military retirees, 
military spouses and dependents, caregivers and veterans. It is the role of the Director of 
Mission United to spearhead the engagement of diverse stakeholder groups that guide 
mission, vision, and strategy, as well as support aligned activities and shared measurements, 
build public will and community engagement, advance policy, and mobilize funding.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 


 
Administrative &amp; Financial Management 
 • Coordinates, gathers, and support internal staff and consultants when needed to 

develop successful proposals and investment opportunities. 
 • Create, read, and understand budgets and other financial reports, including drawing 

conclusions regarding the financial impact of product/program development and 
implementation. 

 • Support reporting requirements for funders cross-functionally with CI, RD, and 
Operations to ensure timely and accurate reporting 

 • Provide oversite of call centers and initiatives related to Mission United 
 • Develop and maintain protocols and/or policies regarding the operations of the Mission 

United Call center. 
 • Function as a trusted advisor to the Community Impact department head in helping to 

guide strategic direction for community investments and the creation of programs and 
services. 

 • Lead and build the talent of staff specifically aligned to family stability. Give constructive 
feedback, coach, and mentor employees to achieve high performance and results. 

 • Conduct/Ensure all training requirements for staff are met, including re-certifications. 
 • Support and promote the development of positive team relationships. 

 
Community Collaboration 
 • Represent UWSHR at external events and ensure collaborative community relationships, as 

 needed. 
 • Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the education field 

both inside and outside the United Way network. 
 • Participate in community conversations with internal and external stakeholders to break 

down complex problems and situations, develop strategies, and create solutions. 
 • Identify advocacy priorities based on community needs and local, state, and national 

resources.

Data, Research &amp; Reporting 
 • Advance agencies’ capacity to measure results as well as the United Way’s ability to 

document and communicate shared measures as related to the veteran and military-
connected population. 

 • Assist with the collection of financial status and data to support reporting requirements as 
related to grant-funded requirements. 

 • Understands, analyzes, and uses community and social data to create effective 
community solutions; Asks insightful and provocative questions regarding community 
needs, resources, and values. 

 • Establish and maintain a Mission United data management infrastructure that collects, 
manages, and reports data effectively, in addition to identifying core measurable 
outcomes for agencies awarded grants. 


 • Create metrics to assess the performance of programs and gauge their effectiveness in 
uplifting the community. 

 
Program Development &amp; Implementation 
 • Provides effective leadership to team peers and team members through team meetings, 

expectation setting, regular feedback, performance management, and cascading 
communications. 

 • Based on strategically relevant data, the Director seeks to create efficiencies for current 
products and Initiatives, as well as products and services that are new and useful. 

 • Continuously monitors and evaluates progress based on goals and recalibrates when 
necessary; Brings people together to successfully execute tasks. 

 • Works inclusively with individuals (target populations, residents, and other non-institutional 
partners), networks, and organizations to explore shared interests and create and act on 
common goals, priorities, and visions; Influences shared goals. 

 • Provide leadership and oversight for all grants awarded to Mission United for UWSHR to 
ensure the most impactful delivery focused on uplifting the community. 

 
Marketing and Resource Development and Outreach 
 • As a subject matter expert on military and veteran initiatives, interprets data for RD and 

MKTG professionals to turn into stories, reports, and powerful messages to engage donors. 
 • Participates in campaign and donor engagement by presenting and attending donor visits 

with RD; Provides return on investment information for donors that is articulated and 
succinct. 

 • Actively participates in projects, special events, cross-functional teams, or workgroups that 
support the work of the entire organization. 

 • Engage UWSHR staff and volunteers to achieve goals related to programming and funding, 
fundraising, and communications. 

 • Identify and cultivate individual, corporate, government, and foundations in collaboration 
with United Way’s Resource Development team to increase resources supporting Mission 
United’s mission and services. 

 • Occasional evenings and weekends are required. 
 

 
Key Skills Requirements: 

 • Bachelor’s Degree in related field required; master’s degree preferred 
 • 5-10 years relevant military experience (as service member or in a civilian capacity); 

prior military service preferred; seeking candidates with strategic planning, program 
development, and evaluation competencies 

 • Familiarity with asset-based approaches to community development, volunteerism, 
and corporate philanthropy 

 • Demonstrated experience with group facilitation and working with and managing 
staff and/or volunteers to plan and implement community-based initiatives with 
specific deliverables and demonstrable outcomes. This includes an ability to inspire,

This position will handle incoming phone contacts on our National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (NSPL), also known as 988, while collecting and documenting all required data and offering all applicable resources and referrals to callers who may be in emotional distress and suicidal crisis. The Crisis &amp; 988 Specialist is responsible for providing excellent service to those accessing the service by applying the equivalent of reflective listening and motivational interviewing skills in the context of an electronic exchange. Crisis &amp; 988 Specialists have the special training and skills to interact via phone, chat and text to understand callers’ unique circumstances and needs, render immediate emotional support, provide options for ongoing support/treatment and follow up to ensure needs are being met. This position also requires the ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with diverse and multi-cultural individuals, be non-judgmental, and respectful of the confidential nature of the job. &nbsp;Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions: • Attend staff meetings, in-services, training sessions and conferences when appropriate to job responsibilities. • Participate in staff training activities to maintain the required annual training hours. • Keep Microsoft TEAMS open and check frequently. Acknowledge new posts from Crisis &amp; 988 Director or other supervisory staff promptly. • Keep Outlook email account open and minimized on desktop during work hours; respond to supervisor emails promptly. • Document and maintain accurate, thorough records of all telephone interventions transacted during the work shift. • Be fully prepared to begin answering phone lines promptly per assigned work schedule. • Log into the call queue to take calls. • Adhere to lunch and shift schedule unless change is approved in advance by the Supervisor. • Keep all activities in line with the core values and contribute to the positive culture of United Way of NE Florida. • Contribute to the overall effectiveness of the Crisis and 988 by completing all other tasks as assigned. • Answer phone calls with an appropriate tone of voice, paying close attention to voice inflection and volume. • Answer chats, texts and emails using correct spelling grammar, and professional language, paying close attention to the inclusion of feeling reflections. • Demonstrate proficiency in using multiple types of contact center software, computer hardware and telephone equipment. • Maintain acceptable level of contact handling and customer service performance as described by 988 training standards. • Within 988 guidelines, assesses needs of persons contacting 988 and provide para-professional counseling, information &amp; referral services, crisis intervention, suicide de-escalation/intervention, and linkage services via various channels of communication, including: online chat, phone, texting and email. • Use active listening skills and conversational intent to; develop a strategy that identifies solutions to barriers to access, provide high-quality confidential connections to resources and services, demonstrate objectivity and empathy and be non-judgmental and neutral in handing all contacts. • Develop and implement crisis related safety plans. • If imminent risk to the individual or others, the Crisis &amp; 988 Specialist may engage 911 to assist in response. • Maintain a non-judgmental attitude when interacting with contacts, displaying sensitivity to all cultural backgrounds. • Referral process consists of assessing the needs of the inquirer, identifying appropriate resources, and providing enough information about resources to help inquirer make an informed decision. • In line with 988 policy and procedures, follows-up with designated at-risk callers to determine referral outcomes. • Must successfully complete VIBRANT training prior to assisting callers • Perform other such duties as may be assigned by the supervisory team • These job responsibilities are to be the main emphasis of this position.
