The Vice President of Community Initiatives leads the design, execution, and continuous improvement of United Way of Greater Knoxville’s (UWGK) community impact operations. Subcontract Management<ul><li>Oversee the lifecycle of inbound grants and subcontract agreements, including proposal development support, managing partnership agreements, compliance monitoring, performance tracking, and reporting.</li><li>Ensure appropriate systems and infrastructure exist to manage grant documentation, deliverables, deadlines, and compliance requirements.</li><li>Collaborate with Finance and administrative functions to track grant budgets, invoices, and reimbursement processes.</li></ul>Data Evaluation &amp; Systems Oversight<ul><li>Oversee Impact data and resource management staff to ensure effective data collection, quality assurance, analysis, and visualization of outcomes.</li><li>Champion a culture of learning by using data insights, research, and evaluation practices to drive decision-making and continuous program improvement.</li><li>Lead efforts to standardize shared measurement systems and processes across internal Impact teams and collaborative initiatives.</li></ul>Community Partnerships &amp; Collective Impact<ul><li>Collaborate with Impact directors, community partners, and coalitions to identify gaps, emerging needs, and strategic opportunities for greater alignment and coordination.</li><li>Represent UWGK in local, regional, and statewide coalitions and committees, serving as a thought leader in systems-building, equity-centered impact, and cross-sector partnership strategies.</li><li>Build and sustain strong relationships with public agencies, nonprofit partners, and funders to advance shared goals and maximize community resources.</li><li>Partner with the Community Investments team to monitor and update UWGK’s impact agenda and to align short and long-term impacts and outcomes with outbound-grant-funded partners.</li></ul>Communications &nbsp;&amp; External Engagement<ul><li>Partner with Communications and Advancement staff to develop compelling storytelling, case studies, reports, and data-driven messaging that demonstrate UWGK’s impact and enhance donor and stakeholder engagement.</li><li>Support fundraising strategies by providing impact insights, outcome data, and project and partner successes to Advancement teams.</li><li>Ensure consistent and authentic communication of program outcomes, impact, and lessons learned across channels and audiences.</li><li>Support strong UWGK governance, including building relationships with the Board of Directors and committee volunteers, facilitation of impact committees, and providing strategic updates and leading decision-making with the board and committees on community initiatives.</li></ul>Budget &amp; The SVP/COO will lead operations, assisting the CEO in governance and

organizational change efforts. The SVP/COO will provide supervision and 
oversight to staff teams and departments, in addition to representing the 
organization in the CEO’s absence in public meetings, events and with volunteers 
and other stakeholders to further United Way’s interests. 

 
 
POSITION OVERVIEW: 

Demonstrate ability to think strategically about the unique role, approaches and contributions of 
United Way of El Paso County. 

Ability to develop and implement United Way’s overall business/organizational strategy, 
integrating the functional areas into highly effective community impact response to critical 
community needs. 

Have extensive experience in leading high-performing teams (volunteers and staff) in the design 
and delivery of results-based, high-profile, large-scale initiatives, programs and advocacy/public

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Provide leadership and management to a high-performing team of volunteers, staff and 
community members by clarifying priorities, creating and monitoring progress towards

Philanthropy and Engagement

ï· Manage department budget and expenses including planning and management of budget 
line items for specific outcomes.

ï· Counsel and assist staff in professional growth and development within UWEPC and the

basis, present results and challenges to board and senior staff. 
 

Budgeting and Risk Management 

ï· Assist in establishing an annual budget plan. 

ï· Evaluate budget reports vs. actual results and recommend corrective action as required. 

ï· Oversee the contract approval process to ensure contractual terms and cost effectiveness. 

ï· Participate in the financial internal control system as required. 

ï· Manage progress towards revenue goals throughout the year, providing monthly 
projections against goal, with a strong emphasis on understanding and follow-up of 
revenue projected. 

ï· Ensure accurate and detailed donor and account records in order to analyze deployment 
of resources against objectives; assign relationship management responsibilities 
throughout the Corporate Partnerships team; assess and evaluate areas of responsibility 
and adjust resources across all industries and portfolios as needed to drive increased 
investments and engagement.

Bachelor’s degree in business, public administration, social sciences, non-profit management, or 
related field with ten (10) years of senior leadership/management experience or MBA/advanced

Broad based business background with knowledge and experience in organizational 
development, continuous quality improvement, and business compliance requirements, 
preferably with background in each of the managed functions. Demonstrated executive and 
administrative capability including organizational development and change management 
experience.

The Controller will oversee all aspects of accounting, grant management, and financial compliance, while serving as a key advisor to leadership and the Board of Directors.As a core function, the Controller will leverage technology to improve financial analysis, reporting, and decision-making across the organization with the upgraded financial systems that UWCA has invested in.&nbsp;ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESLeadership and Strategy<ul><li>Partner with the CEO and leadership team in shaping financial policy and long-term planning.</li><li>Provide timely financial insights to guide strategic and operational decisions.</li><li>Communicate regularly with the Chair of the Audit Committee of the Board.</li></ul>Accounting and Compliance<ul><li>Lead day-to-day operations of the accounting department.</li><li>Oversee monthly and annual closes, ensuring timely and accurate financials in compliance with US GAAP.</li><li>Ensure proper revenue recognition for both government and foundation grants.</li><li>Maintain and improve accounting policies, procedures and internal controls.</li><li>Manage external audits and coordinate tax filings with external advisors.</li></ul>Team Development<ul><li>Supervise, mentor, and develop a lean, high-performing accounting team (AP, GL, etc.)</li><li>Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.</li></ul>Operational Oversight<ul><li>Oversee credit card program, travel and expense reimbursements, and enforce policy compliance.</li><li>Monitor balance sheet reconciliations, resolving issues proactively.</li><li>Ensure appropriate organizational insurance coverage.</li><li>Track and report on grant commitments, implementing process improvements as needed.</li></ul>Technology and Systems<ul><li>Leverage Sage Intacct and Martus Budgeting to enhance reporting and dashboarding.</li><li>Collaborate with IT consultants on financial system implementations and upgrades.</li><li>Ensure integrity of financial data across platforms.</li></ul>Special Projects<ul><li>Conduct ad hoc analysis, prepare reports, and support organizational initiatives.</li></ul>ORGANIZATIONAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES<ul><li>Work collaboratively with leadership and program teams to ensure financial strategies and practices align with organizational priorities and long-term goals.</li><li>Partner with cross-departmental staff to provide financial guidance and support that strengthens decision-making across programs and operations.</li><li>Share financial outcomes and insights with the organization, including preparing reports for leadership, grant compliance, and stakeholder communications.</li><li>Contribute financial expertise, ideas, and strategies to enhance organizational effectiveness, build team capacity, and improve overall operations.</li><li>Participate in cross-functional meetings, trainings, and planning sessions, offering a financial perspective to advance organizational objectives.</li></ul>REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONEDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE<ul><li>Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA preferred.</li><li>10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 5 years in a leadership role within a mid-to-large non-profit.</li><li>Proven success in managing grants (government and foundation) and ensuring compliance.&nbsp;</li><li>Strong knowledge of non-profit accounting and GAAP.</li><li>Experience building and leading small, high-performing teams.</li><li>Proficiency in Microsoft Office but especially Excel (PivotTables, LOOKUP functions, data analysis).</li><li>Experience using Sage Intacct strongly preferred and Martus Budgeting a big plus.&nbsp;</li><li>Strong analytical, decision-making, and communication skills.</li><li>Self-motivated, hands on and adaptable to a dynamic environment.</li></ul>SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS<ul><li>Extensive knowledge of accounting principles (GAAP) and financial reporting, with proven experience preparing accurate financial statements, budgets, and forecasts.</li><li>Strong strategic planning and analytical skills, with the ability to develop financial strategies that support organizational goals and drive business performance.</li><li>Proven project management skills, including the ability to lead complex financial initiatives, meet deadlines, and manage multiple priorities efficiently.</li><li>Experience leading and supervising finance and accounting teams, providing coaching, mentoring, and professional development to staff.</li><li>Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with executive leadership, board members, auditors, and external partners.</li><li>Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present complex financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders.&nbsp;</li><li>Demonstrated ability to work independently in a virtual environment, exercise sound judgment, and implement creative solutions to complex financial challenges.</li><li>High level of proficiency in financial systems, ERP platforms, spreadsheet modeling, and reporting tools, with the ability to leverage technology to improve financial processes and controls.</li></ul>OTHER REQUIREMENTS AND PREFERENCES<ul><li>Strong ethical backbone, willingness to make extra effort to do the right thing.</li><li>Ability to travel periodically for in-person meetings, if necessary (reimbursements for travel costs provided).</li></ul>LOCATIONUnited Ways of California operates as a fully virtual organization.
