The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) is a national IRS sponsored program that helps eligible taxpayers receive their maximum federal and state tax refunds.  The VITA Program Coordinator oversees the VITA program including IRS certified VITA volunteers; coordination and communication of sites in a multiple- county area; meets grant and sponsorship requirements; and leads promotion and education of VITA and economic mobility in UWECI’s  five-county area. 

Position Type: Full Time, Non-exempt

Reporting To: VP, Community Impact

Hours: 40/ week

Level of Education:   AA Degree and 1-3 years of experience OR

Work Experience: ( ) 1-3 years, ( X ) 3-5 years, ( ) 5-7 years, ( ) 7+ years 

Preferred field(s) of study: Non-Profit, Social Work, Financial Institution

  • Complete VITA training and certification in accordance with IRS and United Way of East Central Iowa requirements. 
  • Work with United Way internal departments collaboratively to develop marketing, outreach, and communications collateral for the program for awareness and education. 
  • Assist in volunteer recruitment, training, and retention.
  • Ensure all volunteers meet the IRS training and certification requirements according to their volunteer positions.
  • Develop the VITA volunteers’ work schedules and compile the number of volunteer hours spent preparing tax returns.
  • Procure and maintain the appropriate supplies, equipment, software, and ancillary materials to be used for tax preparation at the site by maintain the VITA budget.
  • When needed, provide support for all electronic return filing procedures within the guidelinesof the IRS VITA Agreement, including completing the electronic filing of batched taxpayer returns at the conclusion of each day.
  • Develop, maintain, and modify the processes and procedures required by VITA.
  • Adhere to grant requirements, communications and standards set by various funding sources, including but not limited to IRS, Iowa Center for Economic Success and varying sponsored partners. 
  • Track program data, including program details, objectives and results, and descriptive narratives on programmatic impact.
  • Assist with the development of the VITA program budget and monitor all revenue and expenses.
  • Coordinate and implement outreach and education activities in UWECI’s five county area that align with VITA and economic mobility.
  • Represent the VITA program at state meetings and teleconferences.
  • Additional duties may be assigned during off VITA off season
