Job Summary/Position Requirements
The Executive Director (ED) of United Ways of Minnesota is responsible for providing strategic leadership, resource
development, and fostering collaboration among member organizations, and representing the state association in various
capacities. This position is eligible for remote work with travel required.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Fundraising and Resource Development (Priority)
o Lead fundraising initiatives, including grant writing and developing sponsorship opportunities.
o Identify potential funding sources and work with the board to set fundraising goals.
o Develop and maintain relationships with corporate and foundation partners to support statewide initiatives
and programs.
2. Advocacy for Statewide Initiatives (Priority)
o Serve as the primary representative for United Ways of Minnesota on the ALICE (Asset Limited, Income
Constrained, Employed) data initiative, 211, and any future initiatives.
o Collaborate with local, state, and national partners to analyze and disseminate ALICE data, 211, and any future
initiatives to foster community strategies and drive impactful initiatives.
o Fostering statewide initiatives.
3. Leadership and Membership Support
o Develop and implement strategies to support United Way members across Minnesota.
o Oversee the preparation of membership materials and the collection of annual dues.
o Provide onboarding and ongoing support to new Executive Directors, including orientation, peer mentoring,
and coaching.
o Conduct visits and provide training to member organizations as needed, focusing on board development,
problem-solving, and collaborative opportunities.
o Create and distribute surveys and reports to gather feedback and insights from members.
o Foster and encourage regional meetings and collaborative efforts among member organizations.
o Advocate for UW’s across the state by visiting on a regular rotation, the various UW offices.
o Create value for all United Ways across the state.
o Manage streamlined communication tools that encourage membership engagement.
Position: Executive Director
Reports to: United Ways of Minnesota Board of Directors
Terms: Part-time, Non-exempt, Salary or Hourly (32 hours)
Salary Range: $60-$70,000
o Building relationships across the state to ensure that every United Way is successful.
4. Collaboration and External Relations
o Build and maintain relationships with key community partners and other relevant organizations.
o Represent United Ways of Minnesota at national and regional meetings to ensure alignment with UWW and
other state associations.
o Represent the state association and its members.
5. Board Relations and Governance
o Work closely with the Board of Directors to plan meetings, develop agendas, and provide necessary
background information.
o Support the board in governance, strategic planning, and policy development.
o Ensure compliance with organizational bylaws and policies.
6. Communications and Outreach
o Effectively communicates with member organizations utilizing multiple formats.
o Promote a culture of transparency and open communication within the association.
o Solicit feedback from members to inform the future communications and actions of the association.
7. Administration and Operations
o Oversee the day-to-day operations of the state association, ensuring efficiency and compliance with all legal
and regulatory requirements.
o Manage the association's budget and financial resources in collaboration with the Fiscal Host.
8. Event Planning and Management
o Plan and execute two annual statewide conferences, including managing logistics, securing speakers, and
facilitating evaluations.
o Increase access to training and development opportunities for members statewide and make UWW training
relevant to the rural communities. Make it available in multiple formats.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree or 5 years’ experience in a relevant field.
• Proven experience in nonprofit leadership, preferably within a membership organization.
• Strong skills in fundraising, including grant writing and sponsorship development, with a track record of success.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.
• Ability to work independently and remotely, with the ability to travel across the state, utilizing a personal vehicle.
• Experience in data analysis and presentation, particularly in relation to community impact metrics.
