Job Summary:

United Way of King County’s Free Tax Preparation Campaign is committed to helping low- to moderate-income families connect with life changing anti-poverty programs. The campaign served more than twelve thousand clients and impacted more than 23,000 community members during the 2023-24 tax season, bringing more than $15 million into the community. United Way plans to exceed these accomplishments during the upcoming 2024-25 tax season and is hiring up to 25 Tax Site Managers to achieve this goal. 

As a Tax Site Manager for the Free Tax Preparation Campaign, you will oversee the daily operations of one or more in-person tax site(s) at least two shifts each week. You will provide coordination, organization, and supervision for tax preparation, including overseeing team assignments, providing guidance and mentorship during designated shifts, answering tax preparation questions, supporting volunteers, troubleshooting issues, and elevating challenges. We are seeking individuals with strong customer service experience, especially with low-income clients. Preference for applicants with a high degree of flexibility and adaptability, strong attention to detail, and the capability to manage the volunteers in dynamic environments. 

This position is a temporary, time-limited role, lasting from November 16, 2024, until April 30, 2025. Selected candidates will be required to: 

  • Attend a two-day weekend Tax Site Manager training workshop November 16th-17th. 
  • Support at least two weekends of the five volunteer training weekends offered at North Seattle College during the following weekends in December and January (Approx. 10 hours/day, 8 AM - 6 PM each day): December 7-8 & 14-15 and January 4-5, 11-12, & 18-19.
  • Commit to at least two weekly shifts managing one or more in-person tax site(s) in King County between January 21st – April 30th. 
  • Daytime, evening, and weekend shifts available. Weekday shifts are typically 5-6 hours and weekend shifts are typically 6-8 hours.

*Please note: Tax sites schedules are still being finalized and days & hours of available shifts may change. 

Although a commitment of only 2 shifts/week is required, preference will be given to applicants who can manage a high-need tax site during all  available shifts each week. Hours per week depend on location, with both full-time and part-time opportunities available:

Full-time:

  • Seattle Public Library, Downtown Branch: 37 hrs./week onsite, with additional time for administrative tasks (onsite or remote) up to a total of 40 hrs./week. 
  • Southcenter Mall (Tukwila): 40 hrs./week onsite. Overtime (compensated at 1.5 times the hourly wage) for administrative tasks may be required either onsite or remote.

Part-time:

  • Kent Public Health: 24 hrs./week onsite, with additional time for administrative tasks (onsite or remote) up to a total of 30 hrs./week. 
  • Multi-Service Center (Federal Way): 24 hrs. week onsite, with additional time for administrative tasks (onsite or remote) up to a total of 30 hrs./week.

Compensation: 

The compensation for this role is $26.36 per hour. This post will remain open until all the positions are filled.

In compliance with the City of Seattle’s Paid Sick and Safe Leave Ordinance, you will accrue Sick and Safe Leave for the period of your assignment. After 90 days of employment, these accrued hours can be used for Sick and Safe Leave. You will not be compensated for these accrued hours when your assignment ends. 

Essential Duties:

  • Oversees preparation of tax returns and confirms all returns are correct. 
  • Drives team motivation to positively impact weekly goals.
  • Provides exceptional support to volunteers, managing and answering questions.
  • Provides excellent customer service by resolving issues and making sure clients receive all the services for which they are eligible.
  • Transmits tax returns to IRS Service Center and follows up on all rejected returns.
  • Participates in tax preparation and quality review training sessions.
  • Troubleshoots issues such as case management ticketing problems for clients and volunteers, and escalates unresolved issues as needed to reach an appropriate resolution. 
  • Submits weekly reports and communicates regularly with Tax Campaign staff during tax season.
  • Assists with training and certification of volunteers.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated understanding of social justice and racial equity and committed to applying racial and economic justice lenses in both personal and workplace context.
  • Lived experience or demonstrated professional skills working in a diverse work environment.
  • Demonstrated strong proficiency with technology including coaching others to use technology effectively and troubleshooting technical problems.
  • Proven exceptional customer service skills serving diverse communities.
  • Demonstrated team management experience, especially if experienced managing volunteers.
  • Proven high degree of flexibility and adaptability.
  • Proven effective communication skills in-person, by email, and via virtual messaging platforms like MS Teams.
  • Proven ability to use tax preparation software or willingness to learn.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality with sensitive client information.
  • Willingness to receive tax training and be VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) certified at the advanced level.
  • The ability to speak a second language is helpful but not required. Priority languages include Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese, Russian, Korean, Tagalog, and Amharic. 

Education and/or Experience:

Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent experience, in social work/human services, education, or a related field.  Experience working in community nonprofits or the public sector preferred. At least five years’ experience working in social/human services and/or educational roles, with direct and/or lived experience working in/with/from BIPOC communities in the Greater Seattle/King County area preferred.
