Position Overview
The Staff Accountant plays a key role in maintaining the accuracy, integrity, and reliability of UWCF’s financial operations.
Reporting to the Senior Director of Finance and working closely with the Chief Financial Officer, this role supports general ledger accounting, reconciliations, financial reporting, payroll accounting, and audit preparation. This position is designed for an accounting professional who wants to strengthen their technical skills, contribute to process improvements, and grow into increased responsibility over time.
This role provides hands-on exposure to full-cycle accounting in a complex, multi-funding environment. The position offers the opportunity to take on increasing ownership and responsibility as skills and experience grow.
Success in this role requires strong analytical ability, attention to detail, sound judgment, and a commitment to high-quality financial reporting and internal controls.
Key Responsibilities
Core Accounting & Close
Prepare and post journal entries, including payroll, prepaid expenses, investments, and general ledger adjustments
Perform monthly reconciliations of bank accounts, receivables, payables, credit cards, and other balance sheet accounts
Support month-end and year-end close processes and maintain audit-ready support
Payroll & Expense Allocation
Support payroll accounting processes, including reconciliation of payroll activity, benefits, and related liabilities
Assist with allocation of payroll and benefits across departments and programs
Financial Reporting & Budget Support
Assist in preparing monthly financial reports and variance analyses
Support the annual budget process and monitor cost centers against approved budgets
Grant & Fund Accounting
Support accounting for restricted funding and grant-related activity
Maintain supporting documentation to ensure compliance with funding requirements
Audit & Compliance
Prepare audit schedules and assist with annual audit and IRS Form 990
Maintain adherence to GAAP and internal control standards
Process Improvement
Identify opportunities to streamline manual processes and improve efficiency
Contribute to strengthening internal controls and financial workflows
Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required
Minimum 3–5 years of progressive accounting experience (nonprofit experience preferred)
Strong experience with general ledger accounting, reconciliations, journal entries, and month-end close
Experience supporting audits and preparing financial schedules
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Solid understanding of GAAP and core accounting principles
Strong analytical and reconciliation skills with high attention to detail
Advanced Excel proficiency (pivot tables, formulas, data analysis)
Experience with accounting systems such as Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT or comparable platforms
Ability to manage multiple deadlines independently in a fast-paced environment
Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across departments
High level of integrity, accountability, and professionalism
Disaster Response Expectation
All UWCF employees are considered disaster response workers and may be called upon to support emergency response efforts when community Emergency Support Functions (ESF) are activated, after ensuring personal and family safety.

Compensation & Benefits
Salary Range: $63,000 - $68,000, commensurate with experience.
