POSITION SUMMARY

(Eligible for Hybrid/ 3 days in office - Alexandria, VA)

This is a newly created position and will be a key member of the accounting and finance team, reporting to the VP, Controller. The Senior Manager of Accounting will be responsible for providing operational oversight over all aspects of accounting operations that include the monthly close process, revenue, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, international accounting, financial reporting, tax compliance, audit preparations, system implementations, and other ad hoc duties as assigned.

The Senior Manager of Accounting will also play an integral role in helping to establish best-in-class financial operations, internal control, and prepared readiness for transformation.

Key Responsibilities

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, to include revenue recognition, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, fixed assets, prepaids, deferrals and accruals, pension and post-retirement accounting, and cash management.
  • Conduct technical accounting research in compliance with US GAAP for complex transactions and new and unique arrangements.
  • Prepare financial reports, supporting tables, schedules, and variance analysis in partnership with FP&A and department leaders.
  • Coordinate with external auditors for the annual financial audit, including preparation and documentation of PBCs, provide explanations, and follow up on action items.
  • Assist in the preparation of financial statements and support schedules for the audited financial statements and Form 990.
  • Lead other required statutory audits, compliance forms and audits requests.
  • Develop and support accounting policies and internal controls, manage and uphold compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Monitor and analyze financial results, identify trends, variances, and potential areas of risk that require further review.
  • Manage and mentor accounting staff, fostering growth and development, high-performance and collaborative team environment, while supporting the Controller with broader organizational initiatives and future developments.

Job Requirements

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification is preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field.
  • 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, non-profit preferred.
  • 5+ years of supervisory experience, demonstrated leadership skills in both staff and projects or initiatives
  • Strong understanding of US GAAP, experience in implementing technical accounting guidance, and producing standard financial reports.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with attention to detail.
  • Self-starter willing to identify areas of process improvement and implement as practical; experience in identifying risks and issues and react timely to implement solutions.
  • Able to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously while delivering quality solutions to meet customer (internal and external) expectations. Ability to delegate effectively while providing leadership and guidance to optimize team effort.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and experience with an accounting system. NetSuite experience a plus.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Proven ability to collaborate across departments with all levels of management and colleagues, as well as external parties.
  • Change management experience a plus.

SALARY STATEMENT

The budgeted salary range for this position is currently $125,000 to $ 135,000 per year. Salary is determined by several factors including applicant’s knowledge, skills, experience, position, equity, and market.
