
Senior Director, People Operations
Position Summary:
(Eligible for Hybrid/ 3 days in office - Alexandria, VA)
The Senior Director, People Operations will drive process excellence, data-driven decision-making, and continuous improvement within the People & Culture team, in support of a nimble, high performing. “People First” culture at United Way Worldwide. They will serve as a thought partner and implementer in expanding the delivery of People & Culture supports to UWW staff and to local United Ways around the world.
The Sr. Director fulfills responsibilities in the following functional areas: employee relations, policy implementation, performance management, employment law compliance, recruitment, onboarding, compensation and benefits administration, and coaching managers on effective organizational development. This position reports to the EVP, Chief People & Culture Officer and will serve as a partner in creating services to better serve people needs in UWW and in the UW Network. This position will be expected to work on-site from UWW’s headquarters in Alexandria, VA at least 3 days per week, but more frequently during their initial introductory period, as well as when work needs may require.
Key Responsibilities/Essential Duties of Position:
An individual must be able to perform each essential duty listed below at a satisfactory level:
- Provides day-to-day direction for all aspects of People & Culture, acting as a senior generalist within the team and for internal stakeholders across the organization.
- Administer various human resource plans and procedures for UWW; assists in the development and implementation of human resource policies and procedures; prepares and maintains the employee handbook.
- Coach leaders and teammates on employment guidelines and ensure prompt, satisfactory resolution of validated issues/concerns.
- Recommend innovative approaches, policies, and procedures to continually improve efficiency of the department and services performed.
- Monitor changes in regulatory and legal requirements, and in the external environment, affecting People & Culture functions. Ensure UWW’s employment-related policies and procedures remain legally compliant.
- Respond to inquiries regarding policies, procedures, and programs.
- Administer and monitor reviews for new employees in their introductory period. Resolve employee issues that arise during this period.
- Maintains responsibilities for employee exits, including accurate and timely data transmittals, and collection of actionable exit interview data.
- With EVP, annually assess the People & Culture department work and budget to be able to align our work with the organizational strategies and operational plans
- Develop & implement organizational development solutions in partnership with leaders across the organization.
- Develop programs and curricula that will contribute to UWW’s development of leading class managers & leaders.
- Drive transition management & organizational plans.
- Manage internal & external stakeholders effectively.
- Use HR data to analyze organization health and drive improvement interventions.
- Champion performance management and meritocracy.
- Communicate & broker HR programs, processes and tools.
- Develop training & development programs.
Job Requirements:
- 10+ years HR experience, to include substantive leadership experience, preferably with a national or global organization. Prior experience in the design and administration of employee benefits packages; and compensation programs, and HRIS applications required.
- Senior-level HR certification, ie SPHR, SHRM-SCP, or similar, preferred.
- Highly resourceful team-player, with the ability to also be effective independently.
- Forward thinker, who actively seeks opportunities and proposes solutions.
- Strong organizational skills that reflect ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly with excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with evolving needs.
- Expert level written and verbal communication skills. Must be effective in senior-level communications, large group presentations, and one-on-one explanation, coaching, and persuasion.
- Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency in navigating and administering HRIS applications, as well as Microsoft Office applications, including expert-level knowledge of Excel

SALARY STATEMENT:
The hiring salary range for this position is $165,000 to $180,000 per year. Salaries are determined by several factors including applicant’s knowledge, skills, experience, position, equity, and market.
