General Description: This grant-funded position will work to empower communities to promote drug free lifestyles; build community structures to support those lifestyles; and encourage and support coordinated, systemic approaches to the prevention of substance use. This position will provide overdose prevention education, naloxone distribution and education on naloxone use to Broward community residents.

Primary Job Responsibilities and Duties: 

  • Develops and distributes educational materials that include information on overdose prevention, the use of naloxone and safe injection practices. 
  • Distributes educational materials to Broward County residents at six outreach events and 24 sites in zip codes targeting one (or more) of the priority population(s). 
  • Provides training on naloxone use and distribute naloxone to Broward County residents. 
  • Works within the Commission’s Comprehensive Community Action Plan, implementing Information Dissemination, Educational Trainings, Alternative Strategies, Environmental Strategies and Community-Based Process. 
  • Establishes both formal and informal alliances with organizations which have similar or allied goals, such as the School Board, local law enforcement, health care providers, community centers, and service providers.

Other Job Duties: 

  • Documents the number of naloxone doses and number of educational materials distributed at each event and each distribution site and give each corresponding invoice to the grant funder. 
  • Distributes educational materials to individuals at a minimum of 24 sites located in the following zip codes 33064, 33060, 33311, 33316, 33020, 33063, 33069, 33309, 33308, 33313, 33312, 33021, each quarter throughout the contract term.
  • Responsible for tracking performance measures for deliverables in accordance with grant. 
  • Meet with and enlist key local stakeholders, coalitions, and service providers to promote the goals of the United Way Commission on Behavioral Health and Drug Prevention
  • Organizes, coordinates or assists in the organization of activities, such as the Annual Behavioral Health Conference, Health/Community Fairs, Town Hall meetings, Broward Youth Coalition activities, Commission task forces and other events to support prevention awareness consistent with the Community Action Plan. 
  • Responsible for completing all mandatory support documentation and data entry which follows contract requirements for timeliness and accuracy.
  • Responsible for prompt compliance with all Commission on Behavioral Health and Drug Prevention and/or United Way of Broward regulations and requirements.
  • Maintains productivity requirement and expected billable units per week.
  • Responsible and accountable for attendance at Commission Meetings supervision meetings, and audit preparation meetings.
  • Serves as a customer service role model to ensure a positive relationship in interactions with all participants, volunteers, the community, and peers.
  • Perform duties as needed and/or requested to support and maintain accreditation standards and continuous quality improvement of the Commission on Behavioral Health and Drug Prevention and United Way of Broward County.
  • Must be able to work evenings/weekends and maintain reliable transportation.
  • Must be able to be at work consistently with regular attendance and punctuality and be willing and able to handle all the duties and responsibilities of this position daily.
  • Responds appropriately and effectively to the diversity of co-workers, consumers and stakeholders. 
  • Takes responsibility for other assignments as they arise in the development of UWBC’s Commission activities.
  • Coordinates planning and requests from other Divisions that relate to UWBC’s Commission.
  • Due to the leadership role United Way is called upon to play in the community, particularly during times of crisis, it is the expectation that all United Way staff will be fully engaged in the organization's crisis plan and response efforts.

Education & Experience: 

Combination of education and experience represented by:

  • Bachelor's degree and/or at least 4 years’ experience working in the Mental Health and Substance Abuse related field. 
  • Experience in Human Services Substance Abuse/Mental Health, community organization, program outreach and training facilitation, required.
  • Certified Prevention Professional, preferred.
  • Administrative & Supervisory experience working with volunteers. 
  • High Proficiency required in Microsoft office products like Excel and other related computer programs.
  • Strong organizational, customer service and interpersonal skills are required.
  • Will be required to drive to various outreach locations in Broward County. MUST have reliable transportation. 
  • Strong desire to help others in need. Must be self-motivated, compassionate, have a positive attitude and determined to advocate for the rights and needs and vulnerable people in our community. 

Environment & Physical Demands: The environment is climate controlled (i.e., heated and air-conditioned).  Lighting is adequate through overhead lighting as well as windows and blinds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  Physical demands include sitting and/or standing for extended periods of time, bending, lifting approximately 25 pounds, regular use of the telephone, copier, fax and computer.  Demands also involve protracted concentration.
