FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Type: Short-Term/Project Based* 

Hours: 10 – 30 hours (depending on employee availability and assignment)
Effective Date: 07/01/2024
Note: Grant funded position with a start date of July 29, 2024
Wage: $20 per hour
*Short Term/Project Based position with ending date of June 20, 2025. Potential to continue based on additional grant funding.
 

JOB SUMMARY: The United Readers: Building Blocks (URBB) Mentors will collaborate with staff to provide literacy supports to children who are Pre-K through Kindergarten age, and their families. A significant portion of the time will be spent in individual and/or small group activities with early learners on foundational literacy and school readiness skills, e.g., phonological and alphabetic awareness. Mentors will implement developmentally appropriate, evidence-based lessons, and supplemental activities with early learners in a variety of settings, e.g., private Pre-K centers, school district Pre-K and/or Kindergarten classrooms, community centers. Education activities will be conducted in–person with students and at one or more locations as assigned. Mentors will attend trainings and assist with administrative tasks at the UWNNS office or other designated locations. The URBB Mentor will support and advance United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra’s (UWNNS) mission to link the community’s will and resources to improve lives and support UWNNS’ focus on early childhood literacy and goal of improving third grade reading scores in Northern Nevada. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: United Readers: Building Blocks
• Engage early learners in age-appropriate literacy supports
•Lead early learners in accordance with provided curriculum and training
•Adapt to variations in learner’s performance/behavior using provided strategies
•Utilize evidence-based, proactive strategies for increasing learner engagement (provided in training)
•Collect and record data on learner performance and share with appropriate parties as directed
•Participate in required orientation and training sessions
•May support UWNNS Kindergarten transition efforts
•May support family engagement activities, e.g., family literacy nights
•Prepare materials as directed and complete administrative tasks

•Maintain confidentiality requirements to protect learner/family privacy
•Professionally represent United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra
•Other duties as assigned
 

QUALIFICATIONS:
•At least 18 years of age
•High school degree or equivalent
•Adaptable, open to feedback, and willing to learn
•Attention to detail and strong communication skills
•Proficient reading, writing, and speaking in English
•Ability to work individually and as a team member
•Knowledge of standard office technology
•Reliable transportation. Individuals with their own vehicle must maintain current driver’s license and auto insurance.
•Complete a successful background check to include fingerprinting
 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
•Experience with young children
•Knowledge of early childhood development
•Interest and/or experience with education or a related field
•Fluency in Spanish would be considered an asset.
 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for up to 3.5 hours; have the use of both hands; ability to reach with both hands and arms; to speak clearly and hear callers when answering the phone and via other technology. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk throughout the office or worksite to perform duties. The employee must occasionally lift, carry and/or push up to 25 pounds (e.g. packing campaign materials). Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. Reasonable accommodation may be provided.
