
Marketing & Communications Intern

Location: On-site at United Way of East Central Iowa (UWECI) office in Cedar Rapids, IA
The Marketing & Communications Intern position is an opportunity for an individual to gain real-world experience promoting a non-profit organization. This internship encompasses a variety of tasks to give the intern a wide range of projects and duties, such as social media, video production, event management, content creation, and more. Additional duties and tasks can be determined by UWECI staff upon intern onboarding.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Content Creation:
• Create content that promotes UWECI programs, initiatives, and fundraising opportunities. Content can include video, photo, written articles, social media posts, press releases, etc.
• Edit content to ensure it is accurate and concise.
• Assist with developing content for 2025 Annual Report.
• Develop photo and video content promoting UWECI’s programs and events – this could include day-of events
Graphic Design:
• Create various pieces of collateral to be used by UWECI staff, such as brochures, pamphlets, rack cards, flyers, social media graphics, etc.
• Assist with updates to progress dashboards and impact reports.
• Update materials with new UWECI logo, such as building signage, documents, etc.
Event Planning:
• Assist Marketing & Communications team with various event-related tasks, such as day-of materials, event set-up, photography, etc.
• Develop promotional plans to highlight events on social media and other marketing platforms
ESSENTIAL SKILLS
• Ability to self-sufficiently develop, implement, and manage various marketing projects
• Desire to grow and learn about marketing and communications in the non-profit sector
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work under deadlines, as decided upon by Marketing & Communications team
• Complete work with minimal supervision from UWECI staff
• Microsoft Office knowledge
Preferred
• Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, social media platforms, and video production software
EDUCATION
Level of Education Required: It’s preferred the applicant is pursuing an undergraduate degree in marketing, public relations, graphic design, business or another related field. Applicants for individuals who have completed their degree and are looking for work experience are also welcome to apply.
JOB SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES
• Teamwork: Our marketing team is a two-person full-time team, so it takes all of us working together to accomplish our common goals.
• Creativity: The intern would have the opportunity to create marketing projects that promote UWECI’s program and initiatives.
• New Branding: In Oct. 2024, UWECI underwent new branding to align with United Way Worldwide, which means there are numerous opportunities to showcase our new branding within various marketing projects and other duties, as assigned.
• Responsible: UWECI marketing staff will provide routine oversight to the internship role, but it is the expectation that the intern would be held accountable for their duties and tasks. It’s also the expectation that deadlines would be met.
• Willing to Learn: UWECI marketing staff are willing to train and teach the intern various pieces about our organization and marketing efforts. It’s the expectation that the intern would be open to learning new things.
