United Way of Broward County fights for the Education, Health and Financial Prosperity of every person in our community.

General Description: Responsible for developing and promoting United Way and its work to Broward County through media relationships, preparing announcements, newsletters, e-blasts, press releases, speeches, Op-ed and other written materials. Role focuses on generating favorable publicity with a major emphasis on expanding the public knowledge of UWBC.

Primary Job Responsibilities & Duties: 

  1. Responsible for the overall supervision, training, and oversight of direct report(s).
  2. Identifies plans, organizes, promotes and executes a year round public relations strategy, developing and maintaining media relationships and identifying new opportunities for public relations activities to enhance UWBC standing in the community.
  3. Prepares internal and external communications, assuring accuracy and timeliness of communications such as; op-eds, press releases, speaking points, campaign materials, speeches, electronic newsletters, presentations, targeted brochures, flyers and invitations.
  4. Responsible for photographing and shooting video for all UWBC fundraising events, volunteer events and special programs to communicate to the community.
  5. Works on marketing materials and marking opportunities to help promote United Way.

Other Job Duties: 

  • Coach, support, and evaluate team member performance, taking corrective action if needed.
  • Create and develops a PR work plan, timetable and performance expectations to meet established goals.
  • Takes lead in social media (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, text to give as well as online donations).
  • Creates, monitors, and manages budgets for public relations activities.
  • Writes collateral material and assures publication and distribution according to special event timelines.
  • Represents UWBC and cultivates relationships with media contacts and sponsors, assuring proper follow up and follow through to assure excellent customer relations.
  • Must meet deadlines.
  • Achieves the Marketing and Communication Division goals for public relations.
  • Monitors public relations efforts, creates and prepares reports, analyzes and interprets data, and suggests strategy changes.
  • Takes responsibility for other assignments as they arise in the development of public relations activities.
  • Assists with development of communications plans by audience, product and channel.
  • Manages sensitive issues and crisis communications
  • Serve as a resource with Media Architect regarding updating the Website and assist with the sites re-design.
  • Assists the VP of Marketing and Communications in execution of marketing program strategies with the Board of Directors, volunteer committees, UWBC Divisions and outside organizations.
  • Coordinates planning and requests from other divisions that relate to special events, as appropriate.
  • Creates/seeks opportunities to extend the UWBC message to corporations (e.g., flyers, banners, billboards, etc.) in conjunction with campaign staff and the Marketing and Communications Division.
  • Responsible for the coordination of the organization’s photography needs and accompanies photographer with shot list, direction and retrieves name information at events.
  • Responsible for video production requests – event videos, campaign video, etc
  • Performs other duties and assumes other responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.
  • Due to the leadership role United Way is called upon to play in the community, particularly during times of crisis, it is the expectation that all United Way staff will be fully engaged in the organization's crisis plan and response efforts.
  • Ensures effective and timely marketing and communications support to UWBC staff.
  • Ensures communication efforts adhere to budget and brand guidelines. 
  • Ensure projects for review, proofreading and approvals meet deadlines.
  • Assists in planning/implementing market research projects, and facilitates use in strategic development.
  • Assists in training staff on United Way’s brand and key messages.
  • Writes and edits copy for various applications (print, presentations, ads, press releases).
  • Assures work is performed within established policies and procedures.
  • Works in a team environment and will have close inter-departmental relationships with multi-department managers, developing, planning and implementing events to enhance the UWBC image. 
  • Assists with the Annual Report and the Annual Community Impact Report
  • Formulates, writes, prepares, and publishes quarterly newsletter
  • Maintains accurate media list, including print, radio, television, and company newsletters.
  • Attends United Way functions some which may be after hours.

Supervises: This position has no supervisory responsibilities

Education & Experience: 

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent, including three years experience in public relations, advertising, communications, or marketing. 
  • Prior supervision experience required.
  • Experience with video and photography. 
  • Experience working with or knowledge of United Way operations desirable. 
  • Superior writing skills. 

Environment & Physical Demands: The environment is climate controlled (i.e., heated and air-conditioned).  Lighting is adequate through overhead lighting as well as windows and blinds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Physical demands include sitting and/or standing for extended periods of time, bending, lifting approximately 25 pounds, regular use of the telephone, copier, fax and computer.  Demands also involve protracted concentration.
