IT Security and Privacy Engineer
Position Summary: (Eligible for Hybrid/ 3 days in office - Alexandria, VA)
The IT Security and Privacy Engineer will play a critical role in maintaining and strengthening United Way Worldwide security and privacy posture. Reporting to the Sr. Director, Privacy and Cybersecurity, this position supports the organization’s strategic goals by ensuring a robust, scalable, and continuously improving approach to security and privacy.
This role combines a strong technical focus with an emphasis on documentation, monitoring, and collaboration. Candidates with a passion for developing innovative solutions, solving complex problems, and cultivating a security-first mindset across the organization will excel in this position. 3+ years of relevant experience in the field. Nonprofit experience valued.

Key Responsibilities and Essential Duties:
- Ensure, maintain and document security compliance across all platforms and applications.
- Monitor emerging threats and stay informed on industry security best practices.
- Evaluate and recommend new technologies and initiatives, emphasizing privacy and security by design principles.
- Develop and lead security training and awareness initiatives across staff and key stakeholders.
- Monitor data sets to manage data retention policies
- Collaborate with application and platform administrators to optimize security protocols and implement remediation strategies.
- Actively contribute to the following teams and initiatives:
- Incident Response Team
- Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity Planning
- Risk Assessments
- Policy Development
- Vulnerability and Patch Management
- Vendor Security Assessments
- Compliance audits, reviews, and remediation efforts.
Job Requirements:
Candidates should have experience with some or all of the following areas:
- IT Infrastructure and Security:
- Cloud security, platform security, and familiarity with AWS, Azure, and Microsoft 365 Security.
- Experience with Zero Trust architecture and endpoint security solutions.
- Tools and Platforms:
- TenableOne, Splunk, OneTrust Third Party Risk Management, Salesforce, Snowflake, Drupal or other web applications.
Security Technical Expertise:
- Penetration testing, IT risk assessment, vulnerability management and remediation prioritization.
- Threat Monitoring:
- Log aggregation, analysis, and threat detection.
- Frameworks and Standards:
- Knowledge of NIST 800-53, NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF), PCI Compliance, and CIS Baseline Benchmarks as well as other regulatory compliance measures.
- Privacy and Governance:
- Familiarity with privacy regulations such as GDPR, CCPA, and emerging privacy trends, and AI governance and security best practices.
- Excellent written and verbal communication and exceptional attention to detail
- An interest in working for a non-profit and alignment with the mission of United Way.
Educational Background and Certifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity, Management Information Systems (MIS), Computer Science, or equivalent work experience.
- Industry Certifications: Preference for candidates with industry certifications such as CIPP/US, CIPP/EU, CIPM, CISSP, CISM or Security+ or others relevant to cybersecurity are highly preferred

SALARY STATEMENT:
The budgeted lifespan salary range for this position is currently $110,000 to 130,000 per year. Salaries are determined by several factors including applicant’s knowledge, skills, experience.
