INTERN EXPERIENCE AT UNITED WAY WORLDWIDE

Interns at United Way Worldwide gain valuable learning and working experience at a leading nonprofit organization. Our goal is to make every intern who works with us learn about the area of work they believe they plan to pursue after graduation.  We want each intern to feel included, valuable, and productive in the department in which they are assigned.   In addition to the hands-on experience, you’ll receive working at the largest nonprofit in the world, you will be provided with weekly meetings led by subject matter experts and professional development workshops when available. 

APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS

The internship opportunities are open to current students attending a college or university. Applicants must be eligible to work within the United States and have all documentation at the time of their application. Internship schedules will generally be Mondays through Thursdays, off on Fridays. 

POSITION DEPARTMENT

Information Technology: Security and Privacy Team

POSITION SUMMARY

Join United Way Worldwide as we refine our data security. We are seeking an IT Intern with a passion for both understanding and implementation of security/privacy practices who can bring current classroom knowledge into practice. This position will provide real-world experience related to strategic choices between balancing current critical needs with long-term planning and design. 

The IT Security Intern will assist in building processes and tracking to streamline the application of security across platforms as informed by NIST CSF and CIS Benchmarks. The Internship will also provide learning opportunities related to evolving privacy implementation and practices. 

Through technology, collaboration, and creative problem-solving, the IT Security Intern will actively contribute to meaningful projects and work closely with a mentor as well as UWW leaders. 

The ideal candidate will bring a combination of technical skills, curiosity, attention to detail, is driven to seek feasible solutions aligned with organizational context, and has a sense of humor, too. 

PRIMARY PROJECTS

  • Supports the IT team via projects to streamline data security 
  • Assists with the following: 
  • Collaboration on projects involving cybersecurity, data management, AWS, Salesforce and other integrations. 
  • Mapping data flows
  • Data classification
  • Policy reviews and creation aligned with NIST CSF
  • Business Continuity Planning
  • Penetration Testing

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Computer Science, Information Technology, or Management Information Systems major with a focus on IT security and/or data privacy. 
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Strong verbal and written communication
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills including strong Excel skills
  • An interest in collaborating effectively with diverse teams and leaders
  • Strong work ethic and attention to detail

PREFERRED SKILLS

Not Required though beneficial experience: AI/ML, Privacy by Design, GDPR, Zero Trust, CIS or NIST Frameworks, MITRE Attack Surface, security vulnerabilities or ethical hacking, products including Splunk, TenableOne and security management tools

LOCATION

This internship takes place at the United Way Worldwide office at 701 N. Fairfax St., Alexandria, VA 22314.

TIME FRAME

Summer – June 2, 2025 to July 31, 2025 

Pay Rate:  $21.00 - $25.00 / hour
