Housing and Veterans Program Assistant

Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt, Grant funded

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (In-o-office, not remote)

Location: United Way of Forsyth County, Winston-Salem, NC

Reports To: Strategic Housing Initiatives Program Officer

Required: Valid NC Driver’s License

Purpose of the Position

The Housing and Veterans Program Assistant provides vital administrative and

programmatic support to Housing Matters (HM) and the Supportive Services for Veteran

Families (SSVF) program. This role ensures smooth operations across multiple initiatives,

including federal and local grant management, partner communications, data systems,

and board/committee support. The Program Assistant is a key connector helping to

advance housing stability for individuals and families, with a strong focus on serving

veterans.

Key Responsibilities

Housing Matters

 Provide administrative support to the Strategic Housing Initiatives Program Officer.

 Coordinate and steward contract communications between funders and UWFC.

 Process Temporary Financial Assistance (TFA) requests from FRRC partners: enter

requests in HMIS, review for accuracy, and follow up as needed.

 Train new case managers on submitting check requests and program billing.

 Assist with preparation of grant applications, as needed.

 Draft minutes for team meetings.

 Coordinate conference and training logistics, including travel, lodging, and

registration.

Supportive Services for Veterans and their Families (SSVF)

 Serve as the primary point of contact for SSVF communications, ensuring

consistent and timely distribution of program information.

 Provide administrative and logistical support for SSVF team meetings, veteran

service coordination events, and collaborative partner convenings.

 Track and maintain SSVF program documentation, including veteran eligibility

verification, housing stability plans, and case management support materials.

 Assist with grant compliance and reporting specific to SSVF, including data entry,

billing preparation, and performance tracking.

 Support veteran-focused outreach efforts through Mission United in coordination

with community partners and VA representatives.

 Maintain accurate data entry in HMIS for SSVF participants and ensure compliance

with HUD-VASH and VA reporting requirements.

 Provide onboarding and training assistance for new SSVF case managers.

Required Skills & Competencies

 Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).

 Familiarity with HMIS data standards (or ability to learn).

 Strong organizational and data-entry skills.

 Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

 Demonstrated understanding of the causes and impacts of homelessness, with

specific awareness of veteran issues preferred.

 Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, partners, volunteers, and the public.

 Cooperative, helpful, and professional demeanor.

 Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Education & Experience

 High school diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience required; some college

preferred.

 Minimum 1–2 years of administrative or program support experience.

 Veteran or military experience strongly preferred

 Experience working in nonprofit, housing, or services strongly preferred.

Physical Requirements

 Ability to move throughout the office to access files and supplies.

 Ability to lift up to 20 pounds occasionally.

Primary Relationships

 Works closely with staff, volunteers, community partners, funders, donors, and

members of the public.
