POSITION SUMMARY 

(This is a non-hybrid, non-remote position located in United Way Worldwide offices at 701 N. Fairfax Street, Alexandria, VA)

The Chief People & Culture Officer is responsible for the oversight and delivery of our People & Culture strategy and operations throughout United Way Worldwide. This leader is a significant partner in supporting other departments in attaining their goals through the recruitment, development, and retention of skilled and experienced talent for our organization in its transitional and transformational state. Must have generalist human resources knowledge to be able to align all people strategies to current and future plans of the organization.  This position guides the People & Culture staff and operations at United Way Worldwide to improve people engagement, performance, and identify and develop a pipeline of high-performing, high-potential leaders.

People & Culture exists to assist the organization in making United Way the nonprofit employer of choice. This role represents an exciting opportunity to further define and implement a long-term strategy for People & Culture which is consistent with the strategic operational plan and core competencies of United Way Worldwide. The position includes direct responsibility for People & Culture and the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion function at United Way Worldwide, as well as collaboration with People leaders at local United Ways. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL DUTIES OF POSITION

An individual must be able to perform each essential duty listed below at a satisfactory level: 

People & Culture Strategy – Oversight of the employee experience from recruitment through hiring and onboarding, to ongoing development and transition. 

  • Collaborate with the Executive Leadership Team on organizational plan and design, People & Culture strategy, and performance management implementation and execution.
  • Assist the organization’s culture development to raise awareness of our interactions in a changing world of work to be regarded as a respected and trusted partner working in an inclusive and equitable manner at all times.
  • Ensure United Way Worldwide’s values are communicated and understood at all levels. 
  • Use the leadership role to keep peers aware of the changes in people trends and regulatory matters.
  • When necessary, intervene, mediate, and facilitate conflicts in a manner that is a model for the organization and results in appropriate resolution. Eliminate inappropriate behavior and encourage changes toward more appropriate strategies.
  • Provide leadership for the employment, promotion, performance evaluation, training, motivation, coaching, and discipline of the entire organization.
  • Facilitate process improvement efforts and cross-functional teams to ensure key people processes are simple and streamlined.
  • Steer strategic direction of the organization, specifically in the areas of succession planning, talent management, change management, organizational and performance management, training and development, and compensation. 
  • Identify top performers at all levels and implement an efficient and effective succession planning tool.
  • Facilitate executive search support for Local United Ways.
  • Launch and support other employee resource groups in coordination with DEI team
  • Launch and support resource group for local United Way People & Culture leaders to share best practices. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Minimum requirements include: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, Business Administration, Organizational Development, or related field; or commensurate experience.
  • Ten to fifteen years of prior human resources work experience at executive or senior leadership level (EVP, SVP, or VP). Preferably in the non-profit or for-profit sector.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in English.
  • Ability to distill complex information into simple and user-friendly communication messages.
  • Excellent project management skills.
  • Excellent follow-up and follow-through skills, ability to effectively manage committees and deliver quality timely results.
  • Working knowledge and use of online technology and programs. 
  • Ability to interact with all levels of staff.
  • Experience in supporting and/or leading multi-unit, multi-state and global people resources operations and work teams would be a plus.
  • United Way experience desirable but not required.

SALARY STATEMENT

The budgeted starting salary range for this position is currently $ 250,000.00 to

$ 300,000.00 per year. Proffered salaries are determined by several factors including applicant’s knowledge, ­­­skills, experience, and market.

Teamwork Collaboration - Serves as a member of UWW's senior leadership team to build a collaborative and diverse organization. Determines the Group's organization configuration and allocation of departmental resources. Builds espirit de corps in Group and across the organization. Successfully manages collaborative relationships with local United Ways, individual volunteers, and staff, as well as other partner organizations.

Relationship Management - Embodies and promotes UWW's values and guiding principles. Promotes a "win-win" philosophy in dealing with others. Serves as a role model in dealing with others to accomplish organization goals and objectives. Works effectively with United Way staff, volunteers, and other stakeholders to achieve strategic direction. Able to manage and sustain key relationships to benefit the United Way movement and/or UWW. Formulates and communicates in an ethical and politically sensitive manner.

Communications - Develops and expresses a Group vision in a way others "buy" into it. Articulates and communicates Group business goals and objectives. Establishes mechanisms and promotes the constant exchange of ideas and information up, down and across the organization. Keeps Group up to date on issues, decisions, and actions.
