Job Title:  Director of Resource Development

Position Reports to:  President & CEO of United Way of Greater Plymouth County

Work Schedule:  Maximum flexibility in work week schedule required, evening or weekends as needed

Classification:  Full time, Exempt

Summary:  To actively oversee and lead all Resource Development activity of the organization including annual fundraising campaign, major and planned gifts, and special event fundraisers.  Cultivate corporate and individual relationships, organizes, and maximizes workplace campaigns to increase participation and giving. Increase all resources to achieve the organization’s mission to “unite people, ideas and resources to improve lives in Greater Plymouth County”.

Strategic Relationship Building

• Prospect Management: Gathers and uses data in making requests for donations and other types of contributions; Connects donors’ and prospects’ areas of interest directly to United Way’s work; Inspires commitment and support for United Way.

• Effective Selling: Employs consultative selling techniques to match donor interests and community aspirations to United Way products/solutions; Measures and tracks donor and campaign volunteer satisfaction.

• Creates win/win relationships: Understands United Way and donor objectives and where they intersect; Identifies tangible outcomes that benefit both parties; Identifies strategies and opportunities to build trust; Engages with donors year-round, not just during campaign season, to nurture and enhance relationships.

• Steward Donors: Recognizes the power of effective stewardship (thanking donors, informing them about the impact of their gifts, keeping them apprised of progress on the community work it is intended to address and deepening the relationship) and develops and implements plans to steward donors of all giving levels.

Effective & Engaging Communicator

Effective and passionate communicator, articulating the United Way message in a way that inspires others to act in service to the organization and the community

Essential Functions:

Annual United Way Campaign

Plan and conduct successful annual United Way campaign, including 100+ workplace campaigns

• Design and implement a written annual strategic campaign plan, including a well thought out and organized campaign structure with clearly defined roles for volunteers and a set schedule of planning meetings to set goals and monitor progress of the campaign.

• Maintain weekly campaign schedule of company solicitations by regular contact with companies and conduct and/or assign staff, loaned executives and other volunteers to conduct solicitations.

• Manage and conduct the daily/weekly activities of the campaign (including, but not limited to, campaign presentations, campaign trainings).

• Prepare, maintain, and update all campaign records, reports, materials, and data in data base.

• Analyze and evaluate strengths and weaknesses of past workplace campaigns and develop new strategies; set goals, timetables, and schedules for all areas of the campaign; maintain an awareness of economic factors in the community impacting workplace campaigns.

• Organize and conduct annual fundraising events, including, but not limited to, campaign kick off, special leadership functions, campaign celebration and annual meeting.

• Develop new prospects, techniques, strategies, and promotions for annual workplace campaigns and related activities. 

Leadership Giving, Planned Giving & Major Gifts

Develop and implement successful programs to generate resources from leadership givers, individual philanthropists, and estate planning.

Donor Recognition

Organize and review routine donor acknowledgement and conduct specialized recognition programs for donors and volunteers.

Reporting and Record Keeping

Responsible for keeping accurate and organized records of all fundraising activities, annual reports for United Way Worldwide, including Database 2, annual budgeting, and annual audit reports.

Effective Supervision

Responsible for directing, supporting, and evaluating all resource development staff and volunteers.

Assist in the day-to-day operations as needed.

Job Relationships:

Maintain frequent contact with all other United Way staff, as well as with local businesses that run campaigns, prospective campaign businesses, volunteers, agencies, organizations, and the public, to provide information and guidance for conducting the campaign.  

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of five years of successful fundraising experience are required.

• Necessary job skills and attributes include full range of professional sales skills from prospecting to closing.

• Excellent verbal and written communications skills, advanced interpersonal / relational skills, presentation skills, and computer skills including database management, and fundraising reports.

• Experience with Andar donor base software preferred.

• Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook required.

• United Way experience preferred.

• Position also requires extensive local (Plymouth County) travel and occasional evening and weekend appointments.
