POSITION: DIRECTOR OF PHILANTHROPY
REPORTS TO: President/Chief Executive Officer
PURPOSE: The Director of Philanthropy supports the mission of United Way of El Paso County (UWEPC) in playing a pivotal role in executing the organization's development strategy. This individual collaborates to execute on fundraising efforts, manage a team to grow resources, and engage donors to connect their passions and the mission of United Way.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Director of Philanthropy oversees a team and will have primary responsibility to ensure that all fundraising and engagement efforts support UWEPC’s community impact model and revenue goals, including workplace giving, individual and major gifts, planned and deferred giving, donor networks, and signature events.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Strategic Leadership: Collaborate with the Chief Executive Officer and other senior leaders to develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy that aligns with the organization's mission and goals and leads to a larger and more diverse revenue model.
• Partner with the CEO and Board of Directors, and internal departments to create and execute intentional, comprehensive, effective short- and long-term strategies for increased revenue generation and diversification aligned with UWEPC’s mission and goals
• Utilize data and analytics to track and evaluate the effectiveness of fundraising strategies and prepare reports on fundraising activities for the President/CEO and board of directors/key stakeholders to inform data-driven decision-making and resource optimization
• In collaboration with the Finance department, develop and manage budgets related to fundraising activities, oversee fundraising reporting, and ensure that all fundraising practices and processes adhere to legal and ethical standards and are in compliance with relevant regulations.
• In collaboration with the Director of Marketing and Engagement, align data, storytelling, marketing, and outreach strategies to grow, engage, and mobilize segmented target audiences.
• Attend key community events and activities as a way to promote UWEPC’s mission, vision and core values becoming a defined community ambassador for United Way.
• Cultivate community support for United Way by maintaining contacts with local organizations, businesses and individuals.
• Advocate for UWEPC Community Impact products with community partners and stakeholders.
• Research new programs and services that may be relevant to the mission and values of UWEPC.
Fundraising Efforts: Oversee and participate in fundraising events, campaigns, and initiatives. Coordinate and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure successful fundraising efforts such as:
Workplace/Employee/Corporate Campaigns and Signature Events
• Drive the strategy and execution around reimaging corporate partnerships and how to engage employees through workplace campaigns and signature events, and as individuals to support the work of United Way.
• Conduct presentations to employees, key executives, and other special interest groups.
• Conduct ongoing follow-up with workplace giving campaign coordinators to ensure effective close-out of campaigns.
• Oversee Combined Campaigns, working closely with City, County and State officials to ensure rules/guidelines are followed.
• Expand innovative workplace giving strategies and corporate engagement methods to grow UWEPC’s donor base.
Grants
• Responsible for upkeep of grant tracker, and oversight of grant research, and coordination
of grant-related meetings to ensure all staff understand their roles in the application process.
• Serves as lead for a portion of United Way grant applications ensuring full organizational integration, including support from other senior staff and/or contract grant writers.
Portfolio Management: Manage a portfolio of major donors, stakeholders, and corporate partners. Cultivate relationships, identify new prospects, and engage in donor acquisition, solicitation, and stewardship activities to maximize financial support.
• Develop and implement strategies to recruit, cultivate, steward, and recognize legacy donors and qualified prospects through targeted outreach, marketing initiatives, events, and other engagement opportunities.
• Lead efforts to identify, cultivate, solicit, and secure new and newly revealed planned gift intentions, including bequests, charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts, and other planned giving vehicles.
• Leverage best practices from United Way Worldwide and partner organizations nationwide to identify and implement effective planned giving strategies.
• Leverage CRM, wealth screening, and leads technology initiatives to enhance fundraising results and donor satisfaction, which improves the organization’s use of systems to increase overall impact.
Donor Engagement: Develop and maintain strong relationships with major donors and stakeholders. Ensure personalized and meaningful interactions that reflect the unique interests and values of each donor.
• Engage and mobilize corporate partners, business leaders, community groups, individual donors, and nonprofit partners to strengthen support for UWEPC’s mission and increase revenue.
• Foster creative thinking and facilitate future partnerships within corporate accounts.
• Create win/win relationships: Understand United Way and donor objectives and where they intersect. Identify tangible outcomes that benefit both parties; Identify strategies and opportunities to build trust. Engage with donors year-round to nurture and enhance relationships.
• Steward donors: Recognize the power of effective stewardship (thanking donors, informing them about the impact of their gifts, keeping them apprised of progress on the community work it is intended to address and deepening the relationship) and develops and implements plans to steward donors of all giving levels.
• Oversee donor engagement events, coordinating and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to ensure successful fundraising efforts.
• Annual development and management of strategies and oversees execution for increasing membership/contribution from donor networks.
• Develop and cultivate successful business/personal relationships with key employees and CEO, including elected officials and key County and City staff.
Fundraising Team Leadership: Provide guidance and support to the fundraising team, helping them meet their fundraising goals and deliver on the organization's mission.
• Champion UWEPC’s mission and community well-being as a member of the Senior Team, providing a united and visible presence across the organization and broader community
• Recruit, supervise, and manage qualified and dedicated staff within UWEPC Philanthropy Department.
• Plan and coordinate ongoing professional development and appropriate skills training for staff on pertinent topics.
• Lead and guide team members in strategically developing and building awareness of services related to addressing community needs.
• Supervise and manage staff workloads and performance plans.
• Provide strategic focus for the team, including encouraging collaboration between initiatives and partners.
Data Analysis: Utilize data and analytics to track and evaluate the effectiveness of fundraising strategies and make data-driven decisions to optimize fundraising efforts.
• Serve as the organizational champion for CRM excellence by leading improvements in system usage, functionality, and data accuracy to ensure organization’s efforts are fully supported and data-driven.
• Supervise data entry of opportunities (daily money) ensuring United Way Worldwide standards are maintained.
• Responsible for overseeing data entry for workplace giving campaigns and United Way Worldwide DB1/DB2.
• Maintain tracking system for all donor recognition, including thank-you letters and e-mails.

Computer Skills
Advanced knowledge of MS Office applications (Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Excel), Intermediate knowledge of CRM software and data entry best practices, Intermediate knowledge of social media and website management platforms i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, Wax; Intermediate knowledge of virtual meeting platforms i.e. Zoom, Got Meeting, Facebook Live, Microsoft Teams. EXPERIENCE/POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree in subjects related to health and human services, non-profit or organizational management, public relations, communications, marketing, or social services, plus seven (7)
years of work experience and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience related to the duties of the position.
Knowledge of the non-profit and social services sector is essential. Preference will be given to individuals who can demonstrate knowledge of CRM software and data entry. Skills in grant- writing, grant management, personnel management, program development and operation, leadership, strategic planning, management of sub-contractors and partnerships, and volunteer engagement are desired.
Analytical and decision-making skills and an ability to anticipate and develop appropriate
recommendations consistent with the desired work environment. Leadership, strategic vision and
big picture perspective.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills and an ability to create the internal
communication systems needed to engage and build staff ownership of the organization’s goals
and objectives at all levels of the organization. Business perceptive and creative, innovative,
critical, and forward-thinking skills.
Ability to assume a leadership role while establishing effective working relationships with a broad
cross-section of staff and volunteers in a culturally sensitive and respectful manner.
Must pass a background check.
Must be able to work a flexible schedule with the possibility of early morning, evening, and
weekend work.
The employee may occasionally travel using personal vehicle and/or work outside normal office
environment.
Must possess a valid driver’s license, current auto insurance, and daily access to reliable vehicle.
