
Director of Network Membership and Development
POSITION SUMMARY
(Eligible for Hybrid/ 3 days in office - Alexandria, VA)
The Director of Network Membership and Development is an exciting opportunity to join the International Network team at United Way Worldwide (UWW) to support local United Way Network Partners in the 35 countries outside of the US where UWW operates.
The Director will provide operations, compliance, and learning and development support to local United Way Network Partners and the Regional Vice Presidents who support UWW’s operations in Africa, Asia & the Pacific, Latin America & the Caribbean, and Europe & the Middle East.
Reporting to the Vice President of Programs and Partnerships for the International Network, the Director will partner with and support UWW, the International Network (IN), and the global Network Partners to leverage our human capital, best-practices, and knowledge sharing to build a high-impact, interconnected global Network.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES OF POSITION:
The Director of Network Membership and Development will:
Operations
- Support the International Network’s Director of Finance with IN's annual budget planning process, including supporting budget drafting, review, revision, and final submission to IN's Executive Vice President
- Collaborate with the Regional Offices, the Global Network Advancement Team, and other relevant departments to develop, monitor, and update relevant International Network content as part of the internal platform, United Way Online
- Collaborate with the Marketing and Communications team to ensure that information, materials, and data about the project, reach, and scope of the International Network are updated and accurately represented across internal and external platforms
- In partnership with the EVP and the Vice President of Programs and Partnerships, collaborate with the Regional Teams to support Network Partners’ completion and submission of the Thriving United Way self-assessment, including analysis and identification of growth opportunities
- Supervise management of Network Partner membership records in Salesforce and other relevant databases.
Member Compliance
- Drive and monitor cross-functional International Network data collection through the online information portal United Way Worldwide Information Gateway (UWWIG). This includes:
- Project manage annual data updates and ensure platform technical performance
- Develop strategy to communicate and disseminate results post-survey
- Collaborate with the Vice President of Programs and Partnerships to analyze UWWIG findings for reporting, strategic planning purposes, and membership compliance
- Notify and monitor Network Partners’ timely submission of data and create regular dashboards to begin to develop a “scorecard” of how each Network Parter is performing with respect to membership compliance, budget management, impact data, etc.
- Lead the annual membership renewal process for Network Partners, providing guidance, advising, and enforcement to ensure compliance with membership and certification requirements, and working to bring organizations into compliance
- Provide key support to the UWW and IN finance teams to ensure Network Partners’ annual dues are billed and collected in a timely fashion
- Spearhead the investigation of alleged breaches of membership requirements to bring recommendations to the UWW Membership Accountability Committee (MAC) for corrective action plans as needed
- Support the EVP and regional teams with dispute resolution among Network Partners and among local United Ways and United Way Worldwide.
- Collaborate with the SVP, Strategic Insights & Operations to prepare for and staff quarterly MAC meetings
- Take the lead in following up on next steps coming out of MAC meetings to ensure Network Partners’ compliance and response.
- Protect the United Way brand through enforcement, education, and capacity building around United Way Worldwide membership policies.
- Support the EVP and the Vice President of Programs and Partnerships to assess Network Partners’ performance and impact, including determining high-performing and under-performing members and supporting the development of a long-term growth strategy (including expansion or contraction), as appropriate.
Learning and Engagement
- Assess Network Partners’ strengths, gaps, and challenges and address them through trainings and other knowledge and information-sharing activities. This includes building the capacity of the Regional Teams to address membership challenges
- Develop the necessary systems, processes, and tools to better support the facilitation, collection, and sharing of knowledge generated by programs across a broad range of communities
- Participate in the creation and dissemination of standards, guides, and tools that assist Network Partners to adopt operational best practices and compliance with membership requirements
- Support the planning and facilitation of learning opportunities for Network Partners within and across regions through regular intra- and inter-regional meetings, highlighting relevant UWW learning opportunities, etc.
- Increase engagement between International Network members, UWW, and the US network of Local United Ways to build ties and strengthen cross-fertilization of information and ideas throughout the entire UW Network.
- Provide Regional Teams with advice and support to assist Network Partners with strengthening their own membership accountability functions within their respective regions
- Other duties as assigned.
Special Projects
- Lead the design, planning, and implementation of priority projects assigned by the EVP
- Prepare project workplans to outline timelines and deliverables for the assigned project and monitor activities, resources, and metrics of the assigned projects to ensure successful and coordinated completion
- Convey priorities, coordinate work and ensure issues are resolved or escalated to ensure project deliverables and timelines are met. Keep the EVP and/or project sponsor updated on project status and make recommendations as issues arise
- Maintain all project documentation, including project plans, status reports, issue and risk logs, budgets and expenses, and project organizational and communication charts.
- Participate in developing presentation decks, briefing notes, background research, etc.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Minimum requirements include:
- Bachelor’s degree, in a related field such as Finance, Policy, Management or Public Administration, or commensurate experience. Master’s degree preferred.
- 5 years of progressive management-level experience, ideally in a membership-based federation.
- Candidates should possess strong analytical competencies, high technological acumen, robust operational know-how, experience developing and/or implementing organizational or institutional policy.
- Strong interpersonal and communications skills, both written and oral.
- Familiarity or experience with United Way a plus.
- Experience working across multiple cultures, working styles, and other differences.
- Strong analytical ability to assess needs, identify opportunities, and measure outcomes effectively
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including a willingness to engage in “difficult conversations” with transparency, diplomacy, and tact.
- Possess a sense of possibility in mindset and vision, and ability to lead with creativity, innovation, and initiative to address opportunities and challenges within the Region
- Ability to thrive in a complex environment with multiple priorities, navigate ambiguity, and create pathways or solutions where none currently exist.

SALARY STATEMENT
The budgeted lifespan salary range for this position is currently $125,000 to $140,000 per year.
