Why Join United Way of Central Florida?

At United Way of Central Florida (UWCF), our work is rooted in service, collaboration, and deep respect for the communities we serve. Through Mission United, we stand alongside veterans and their families -- ensuring they can access the resources, support, and stability they deserve.

If you are passionate about serving those who have served our country, thrive in partnership-driven environments, and want your work to make a tangible difference every day, this role offers meaningful impact, purpose-driven work, and the opportunity to strengthen systems of care across our tri-county region.

Position Overview

The Director, Mission United leads the coordination and implementation of UWCF’s Mission United initiative, serving veterans and their families across Polk, Highlands, and Hardee Counties.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, this role is the operational backbone of Mission United -- ensuring strong partner coordination, effective service navigation, accurate reporting, and consistent program execution aligned with UWCF’s Community Impact strategy.

This role focuses on program implementation, service coordination, and systems navigation and does not provide direct clinical, legal, or medical services. The position does not have supervisory responsibility and is evaluated based on operational effectiveness, partnership engagement, accurate reporting, and alignment with UWCF’s Community Impact priorities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute Mission United strategies and workplans in alignment with UWCF leadership and Community Impact priorities.
  • Coordinate service navigation and referral processes connecting veterans to housing, healthcare, behavioral health, employment, legal, benefits, and financial stability resources.
  • Maintain and continuously improve operational tools including SOPs, workflows, referral pathways, and the Veteran Services Directory.
  • Serve as the primary staff liaison to the Mission United Advisory Council and subcommittees.
  • Schedule and facilitate meetings, prepare materials, document action items, and track follow-through.
  • Cultivate strong, collaborative relationships with veteran-serving nonprofits, public agencies, healthcare providers, and community partners.
  • Collect, track, and compile service activity data, community indicators, and outcome metrics.
  • Support grant compliance, reporting requirements, and internal performance discussions in coordination with finance and compliance teams.
  • Prepare clear program summaries, presentations, and informational materials for internal and external audiences.
  • Represent Mission United and UWCF in veteran-focused coalitions, meetings, and regional collaborations.
  • Communicate program progress, needs, and impact to partners and stakeholders.
  • Ensure accurate documentation, scheduling, calendars, and engagement tracking.
  • Support contract and grant administration (excluding fundraising or donor solicitation activities).

Work Schedule & Travel

  • Work hours may vary based on meetings, trainings, and community engagement activities.
  • Occasional evening or weekend work is expected.
  • Reliable transportation and the ability to travel throughout UWCF’s tri-county service area is required.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required; degree in social work, public administration, human services, nonprofit management, or related field preferred.
  • Equivalent experience working directly with veterans and veteran-serving systems may be considered in lieu of formal education.
  • Military service or lived military experience strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 4–5 years of experience in program coordination, community impact, case management, or human services settings (nonprofit or public sector preferred).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong working knowledge of veteran systems, including the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, benefits navigation, housing and homelessness systems, healthcare, behavioral health, employment, and legal resources.
  • Experience coordinating services or navigating systems of care within community-based environments.
  • Ability to work respectfully and ethically with sensitive, confidential, and trauma-impacted populations using trauma-informed practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and partners.
  • Experience supporting grants, contracts, budgets, or compliance documentation.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and comfort working with data tracking or service coordination systems.
