Job Title:  Director of Impact  

Reports to:  Chief Executive Officer

Status:  Full-time permanent. Exempt. 

Location: Modesto, CA

Position Summary:  

The Director of Impact will oversee the organization's programs, service delivery and overall impact work and foster a culture of collaboration, strategic partnerships, and excellence. The Director of Impact is an integral role as impact is the core to the mission and vision. Specifically, this includes capacity building for and with community-based organizations, free tax preparation, health equity and economic mobility work to advance wealth in disinvested communities, overseeing the 211 and mobilizing community resources and piloting or overseeing all strategic initiatives related to impact that arise, working closely with the CEO and designated senior leadership. 

Key Responsibilities/Essential Functions: 

  • Impact:
    • Provide strategic direction and oversight of all programs, services, and partnerships to advance the mission and vision. 
    • Work closely with the CEO and senior leadership to execute the organization's strategic vision.
    • Provides insight into impact, partnerships, and strategic initiatives. 
    • Represent the United Way in community meetings specific to service alignment. 
    • Oversees program development, including the design, implementation, and evaluation of community impact programs. 
    • Working with CEO and grant writing team to provide program specific insights for fund development. In addition to grants, this includes providing impactful information for events, storytelling, marketing, and general fund development work. 
  • Innovation:
    • Continuously identifying new ways to fulfill the mission and vision, including ongoing improvement. 
    • Bridging and connecting United Way programs and services to local initiatives. 
    • Developing systemic change internally and externally to move the needle on core issues like the racial wealth gap or social determinants of health or education. 
    • Staying up to date on policy, best practices, and new models to be a key thought leader in the community. 
  • Program Management/Operational Oversight:
    • Monitor program outcomes and impact, making data-driven recommendations for improvement. This includes monitoring progress toward goals and supporting project management across various workstreams. 
    • Responsible for all grant reports and regular impact reports for the CEO and ensures proper data collection and evaluation of programs and services is occurring and reviewed regularly. 
    • Collaborate with program leaders to ensure alignment with the organization’s mission and goals, both internally and externally. 
    • Oversee program specific budgets which includes both restricted grant revenue and unrestricted funding allocated to the department, working closely with finance team. 
  • Department budget:
    • Partner with the CEO and designated finance lead(s) to develop and manage the organization's budget. This includes informing grant budgets for new funding opportunities. 
    • Identify opportunities to diversify funding as relevant to community impact (i.e. new grant streams, fee for service opportunities). 
    • Provide needed data and impact stories for grant proposals, events, or other forms of fund development.
  • Team Leadership:
    • Foster a culture of teamwork, accountability, and innovation among staff by encouraging creative thinking, experimentation, and the adoption of emerging paradigms. This teamwork is across both direct reports and across the leadership team. 
    • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team within the Impact Department while ensuring cross team collaboration.
    • Lead change management efforts to ensure the smooth adoption of transformation initiatives, including communication, stakeholder engagement, and training programs.  Inspire employees and serve as a role model for the behavior needed to affect organizational change. 
    • Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the organization. 
  • Community Engagement:
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including donors, partners, and community leaders.
    • Represent United Way in public forums and advocate for issues aligned with the organization's mission.
  • Strategic Planning:
    • Engage in strategic planning and departmental workplans to measure progress toward goals, working closely with the CEO and senior leadership. This includes engaging direct reports and providing training and monitoring support. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (master’s degree preferred) or equivalent combination of experience and education.
  2. Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  3. Proven experience in community impact work.
  4. Project and program management experience.
  5. Commitment to the mission and values of United Way.
  6. Current California Class C driver’s license and verifiable automobile insurance.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  1. A passion for working with nonprofit organizations and the community, demonstrated through their work, extracurricular activities, or volunteering.
  2. Proven experience creating and implementing complex, high impact programs and services that include multiple partners and stakeholders. 
  3. Strong financial acumen and experience managing budgets.
  4. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills.
  5. Visionary thinker with the ability to inspire and lead a team.
  6. Strong team orientation, positive attitude, integrity, self-motivation, and discipline.
  7. Attention to detail, reliability, and organizational skills.
  8. Strong analytical skills with the ability to pull information from multiple sources and draw sound conclusions. 
  9. Evaluation and measurement of program impact and service delivery (i.e. Results Based Accountability). 
  10. Proven leadership experience in nonprofit management or a related field.
  11. Demonstrated ability to adapt to evolving environments and navigate ambiguity.
  12. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  13. Ability to assess the organization's needs and take initiative to meet those needs. 
  14. Ability to work independently, self-manage priorities and goals for projects, and consistently meet deadlines. 
  15. Lead others both internally and externally. 

Environmental Conditions:

  • Indoors in a typical office environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, fumes, vibrations, and temperature changes.
  • Travel to offsite locations with exposure to noise, heat, and cold approximately.
  • Frequent computer use at designated workstation. 
  • Frequently working at a fast pace with unscheduled interruptions. 
  • Responsibilities may require an adjusted work schedule and evening/weekend hours to meet deadlines. 
  • May occasionally move (walk or drive) from one work location to another.

Physical Demands:

  • Attendance and punctuality.
  • Mobility within the office.
  • Ability to walk, sit, stand, and climb stairs.
  • Ability to work in hot and cold environments.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Ability to drive a vehicle. 

Benefits and Compensation: 

  • The salary range is $80,000-90,000. 
  • Health benefits the first month following (60) days of continuous employment. 
  • 401K option is available after ninety (90) days of continuous employment.
