United Way of Broome County is a non-profit organization that fights for the health, education, and financial stability of Broome County residents. The organization works in partnership with community organizations and members to drive change that will have positive impact on the critical needs of the community.


POSITION SUMMARY STATEMENT:  The Director of Community Relations and Development is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the current and long-range fundraising efforts of the United Way of Broome County (UWBC). Under the direction of the Executive Director, this individual will tailor and execute the initiatives necessary to achieve assigned campaign growth, retention, participation, and revenue targets, and position the UWBC as the primary philanthropic conduit for companies, their employees, foundations, and individual donors. This position will provide supervision to the Fund Development and Account Manager, directing missionary work associated with prospecting of corporate and individual donors, as well as continuing to foster strong relationships with corporate and individual donor bases. The Director of Community Relations and Development will lead in the execution of all annual campaign events, employee campaigns, the solicitation of corporate and individual donors, report campaign progress to stakeholders, and ensure donors and sponsors are engaged and appropriately recognized. This position reports to the Executive Director and will lead analytic efforts to evaluate qualitative and quantitative data that drives strategies to appropriately establish and achieve annual Community Campaign targets, including cultivating major donors and developing planned giving within the portfolio base.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Community Campaign Management
•    Through the annual campaign and its related strategies, build awareness of the United Way of Broome County (UWBC), its mission, and fundraising initiatives.
•    Plan, organize, coordinate, and execute comprehensive campaign strategies to ensure stronger and sustained corporate and individual relationships with UWBC.
•    Track and evaluate the effectiveness of strategies, campaigns, and overall results. Monitor the performance of campaign initiatives, providing progress reports and projections as needed.
•    Recruit key community and corporate leaders for strategic effectiveness of the Campaign Cabinet.   Collaborate with UWBC Campaign Chairperson and Cabinet, and the UWBC Resource Development (RD) team to develop a campaign plan and timetable, employing a fund-raising process that assesses potential; sets goals; and identifies volunteer leadership for future years.
•    Lead the development and execution of unique annual campaign strategies as part of tailored engagement plans for companies within each division sector. Establish protocols for success for Campaign Cabinet members.
•    Working with Executive Director and UWBC Staff, coordinate grant research and writing process to diversify campaign revenue.
•    Lead efforts to continually evaluate existing portfolios and company outcomes to identify strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities in an effort to improve overall engagement, strategies, and performance.
•    Collaborate with RD Fund Development and Account Manager, UWBC Leadership, and Campaign Cabinet to execute campaign strategies that deepen the commitment of corporations and their employees, and increase participation, retention, and potential revenue.
•    Partner with the Executive Director to develop and cultivate current and new individual and key constituent relationships.
•    Develop and implement strategies for year-round cultivation of existing and new donor relationships.
•    Review and recommend campaign structure adjustments in response to community, economic, or workforce changes.
•    Oversee the management of the e-Pledge process, including proper system setup; monitoring of the incoming pledges; and ensuring the timely acknowledgement of donors.
•    Lead efforts to continually strengthen leadership giving programs, including the Alexis de Tocqueville Society.
•    Work jointly with the Marketing and Communications Director to coordinate consistent messaging related to development initiatives and coordination of recognition efforts and awards.

Relationship Management
•    Lead efforts to build relationships by meeting with businesses and individuals to present UWBC’s strategy for the community and collect data for use to solicit resources.
•    Lead activities related to establishing and maintaining positive relationships with Employee Campaign Managers (ECM) to promote key initiatives of UWBC.
•    Coordinate State Employees Federated Appeal (SEFA) Campaign throughout Broome, Tioga, and Chenango Counties.
•    Lead efforts to identify and secure sponsorship funding from businesses and individuals for annual events and community impact initiatives.
•    Ensure Fund Development and Account Manager is personally initiating and cultivating relationships that will enhance long-term loyalty to UWBC and presenting recognition awards to appropriate candidates and businesses.
•    Support the planning, managing, and coordination of all aspects of the annual Day of Caring (DOC) event. This includes, but is not limited to, soliciting and coordinating volunteer projects and volunteers; coordinating the matching of DOC projects to business volunteer teams; and facilitating DOC orientation.
•    Support Fund Development and Accounts Manager and Marketing and Volunteer Engagement Specialist with United Way’s annual network-wide Day of Service and Day of Action. Expand corporate participation and support. 
•    Align individual and corporate philanthropic interests with UWBC community impact initiatives.
•    Lead efforts to identify non-traditional revenue streams such as grants, sponsorships, and individual planned giving.
•    Collaborate with Executive Director in strengthening leadership giving programs, including the expansion of the Alexis de Tocqueville Society.
•    Ensure Fund Development and Account Manager is positively representing UWBC at community functions and partner events to develop new resources.
•    Coordinate and manage the ECM process by working annually with businesses to identify the candidate to coordinate workplace campaigns with UWBC.
•    Coordinate partner agency speakers at employee meetings to illustrate the values and relationship of funded community partners and the UWBC.
•    Assist in promoting and supporting UWBC programs and initiatives as deemed necessary by the Executive Director.
•    Collaborate with the Community Initiatives and Planning Director in the design and execution of funding requests that are relevant to UWBC’s mission and that support the UWBC Annual Community Campaign.


Account Management
•    In addition to managing a book of business within assigned business divisions, provide oversight and supervision to Fund Development and Account Manager in the management of their book of business within assigned business divisions.
•    Oversee the updating and maintenance of donor information in the ANDAR system for all business sectors and individual accounts.
•    Facilitate the coordination of the direct mail process to individuals and small business supporters.
•    Develop and maintain a business plan for performance tracking of each campaign account, individual, and prospect group.
•    Participate in meetings and training programs to enhance knowledge and build stronger skills for promoting UWBC initiatives and products.
•    Oversee the process of all recognition award certificates and thank you letters to the management and employees of organizations that run a workplace campaign and/or workplace special events.
•    Research and analyze leadership giving data.
•    Maintain the database for all corresponding campaigns using ANDAR software.
•    Attend organizational, departmental, and committee meetings and trainings as directed.    
•    Maintain established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.  

Staff Leadership and Development
•    Provide direct supervision to the Fund Development and Account Manager that is reflective of UWBC mission, vision, and cultural values.
•    Select, guide, motivate, and participate in training, professional development, and evaluation of all direct reports.
•    Provide goal setting, visioning, and strategic direction for direct reports, ensuring they are included in team activities and decisions and they are collaboratively working to achieve organizational goals.
•    Responsible for accurate and timely completion of performance reviews, professional development plans, goals and objectives, timekeeping, and ongoing documentation of performance accomplishments and/or areas requiring improvement for direct reports.


QUALIFICATIONS:  Qualified candidates for the position will possess the following:

Education and Experience Required
•    Bachelor’s degree, with a minimum of 3 years successful experience with United Way or similar field, with concentration on building community relationships
•    Knowledge of fund development plans and implementation
•    Good interpersonal skills and a proven ability in working with individuals of diverse social and economic backgrounds
•    Experience in working with a volunteer board and committee structure and knowledge of how to use them most effectively in fund development
•    Strong public speaking and organizational skills are essential
•    Strong customer relationship skills
•    Ability to work with and interpret financial and statistical data
•    Excellent verbal and written communication skills
•    Knowledge and expertise working in an integrated system platform and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
•    Experience using databases

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (sitting, standing, lifting, etc.):  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  Occasional walking or standing is required. The hands are regularly used to write, type, key and handle or feel small controls and objects.  

HOURS:   This is a full-time exempt position.  Monday – Friday 8:30am-4:30pm. Evening and weekend hours may be required as needed for community events and meetings

STARTING SALARY RANGE:  $58,500-$60,550
