Organization overview:

United Way of Northern New Jersey is one of 1,800 United Ways around the world. Each United Way is an independent entity that serves a specific community. This United Way is unlike any other in the country, running both a national research organization called United For ALICE as well as serving community needs across a five-county region including Morris, Somerset, Suburban Essex, Sussex, and Warren counties.

Broad Function/Purpose:

The Data and Web Application Manager ensures methodological rigor in data collection and presentation, while supporting the Research Team. Key responsibilities include managing data collection, cleaning, validation, and creating data visualizations and interactive tools for ALICE reports and products. This role also involves developing web-based applications, maintaining the ALICE database, contributing to the biennial methodology review, supporting ALICE partner packages, responding to data requests, and leading special projects. Proficiency in statistical tools, web development, and database management is essential, along with strong organizational skills and flexibility.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Collect, clean, and check the quality and reliability of key data sources for inclusion in the ALICE Survival Budgets, reports, and data indicators on the United For ALICE website.
  • Continually explore new data sources, such as national surveys and social determinant indicators, and recommend new/updated sources as appropriate.
  • Provide statistical analysis for new data sources and layer with existing ALICE measures.
  • Perform rigorous data-checking on national, state, and special topic ALICE reports to ensure accuracy.
  • Develop and standardize figures to visually represent ALICE data in reports and on the website.
  • Build and maintain data web tools and applications to enhance the presentation of ALICE data and resources.
  • Assist in the design, development, and maintenance of .Net Framework and/or .Net Core MVC web applications using Microsoft Visual Studio, implementing best practices in dependency injection frameworks and Object-Relational Mapping (ORM) tools.
  • Collaborate with the team to design and implement new interactive features for the United For ALICE website, including dynamic data visualization tools and user-friendly web applications. 
  • Attend and participate in data training and Research Advisory Committee webinars, as needed.
  • Respond to data requests from ALICE partners and external stakeholders.
  • Brainstorm new measures, figures, and content for ALICE products.
  • Support the development of new data indicators, web tools, and other products. 
  • Participate in the biennial methodology review with members of the state Research Advisory Committees to discuss new metrics, data sources, and data challenges, and recommend revisions/updates to the methodology as necessary.
  • Participate in weekly Research Team meetings.
  • Research and draft ad hoc special projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Passion for the vision and mission of United For ALICE and United Way of Northern New Jersey.
  • Statistical knowledge and experience, including proficiency in R, Stata, SAS, SPSS, or a similar statistical software package.
  • Experience with data visualization tools, such as Tableau or PowerBI.
  • Comfort working with Excel and large datasets.
  • Experience building and maintaining interactive web applications and tools, including familiarity with modern web development technologies and practices (i.e., APIs and responsive design). Specific experience using Microsoft Visual Studio to create and build .Net Framework and/or .Net Core MVC web application strongly preferred.
  • Experience with Microsoft’s dependency injection framework and Object-Relational Mapping (ORM) tools.
  • Proficiency in JavaScript, HTML, and related frameworks or libraries.
  • Experience with Microsoft SQL Server is a big plus.
  • Strong organizational skills necessary to prioritize assignments and manage deadlines.
  • Ability to work and collaborate on projects with internal team members and external partners.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to be productive in a remote environment.
  • Degree in computer science, data science, economics, social welfare, social work, community psychology, or a similar related field (master’s preferred or equivalent experience).

Job Type:

  • Full time: 35 hours per week

Compensation:

  • $80,000 annual salary 
  • Benefits: Health, Vision, Dental, 401k, Paid Holidays and Paid Time Off (PTO)

Work Environment:

  • This job function uses standard office equipment, such as computers, phones,printer, and photocopiers
  • Hybrid: Primarily remote, some office meetings with staff, board volunteers, vendors, and donors; able to travel to two meetings a year in northern New Jersey
