Purpose of Position:

The purpose of the Volunteer Coordinator position is to recruit, train, recognize and retain volunteers to support the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program and ensure the VITA tax program has the volunteer support and engagement required to meet program needs for the tax season.

Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Lead the recruitment, placement, and retention of VITA program volunteers 
  • Ensure the program meets target volunteer recruitment and retention goals annually
  • Lead the design of the volunteer program life cycle and volunteer program experience resulting in high participant satisfaction 
  • Assist in schedule development, strong learning experiences, and completion of IRS volunteer training classes 
  • Initiate relationship development with community partners to support the Real Sense program
  • Ensure all VITA program volunteers are IRS-certified to the appropriate level, are knowledge of and adhere to the IRS Volunteer Standards of Conduct, and are aware of IRS Quality Site Requirements
  • Maintain VITA program volunteer IRS-certification documentation and report timely to IRS
  • Track and provide the program and Site Coordinators with accurate information, including IRS-required documentation on site volunteers and monthly volunteer reports
  • Manage year-round communications and engagement with program volunteers
  • Lead annual recognition and appreciation for Real Sense volunteers
  • Assist the Tax Program Manager in planning and executing tax site-related events 
  • Establish a schedule of coordinated messaging and touch-points to support VITA volunteer stewardship in partnership with the United Way VCE and Marketing departments
  • Connect volunteer opportunities to business partners with corporate social responsibility goals that support financial stability, in partnership with the United Way Resource Development department
  • Perform comprehensive data analysis and continuous improvement planning for the program informed by annual volunteer surveys, success stories, focus groups, and other Real Sense data
  • Work closely with Volunteer and Community Engagement Department in the recruitment of skilled based volunteers to support specialized volunteer community needs
  • Perform other special assignments and tasks as assigned in support of Real Sense

Experience/Position Requirements:

  • Must be proficient in the Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel PowerPoint)
  • Must possess strong work ethic
  • Must possess high level of professionalism 
  • Must agree to be flexible with hours - occasional evenings or Saturdays (mostly during training and tax season)
  • High school diploma required. Two-year college degree preferred.
  • 2-4 years progressively responsible, related experience
  • Excellent planning, organizing, verbal/written and PC skills
  • Experience in the area of volunteer development and training
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Experience in planning, policy design, and spreadsheet analysis
  • Familiarity with VITA tax programs and software
