Title: Community Schools Impact Coordinator

Reports to: Director of Education Initiatives

United Way of Northern Utah Mission: Uniting people and organizations to build a healthy, and well-educated community where individuals, families, and neighborhoods thrive.

Goal: United Way of Northern Utah (UWNU) plays a unique role in the community. Having worked with partners in nonprofit, government, and the private sector for decades, we take a community-wide lens in measuring and understanding the impact of our effort and how we can do more. With this in mind, we have co-created a Community School partnership with local school districts and other organizations to ensure children and families have the comprehensive support they need to succeed in school. As such, the primary function of the Community School Impact Coordinator is to grow the scope, scale, and depth of the partnership, working with critical stakeholders in the process. This includes students, families, principals, school support staff, district personnel, community partners, private sector partners, and more.

Summary of Work: The Community School Impact Coordinator’s core function is to facilitate impactful partnerships that are capable of community-level change, meaning develop solutions with community partners that improve the lives of large numbers of people, rather than focusing on a single program. This requires a unique individual who thinks in terms of systems and has the adaptive skill set to work across sectors, and political perspectives. Competencies such as results-based facilitation, systems thinking, project management, continuous improvement, and adaptive leadership are key for this role. Facilitating collaborative, community level outcomes is not for everyone. We seek a capable, energetic, results-focused team member who is comfortable with ambiguity and ready to take this work to the next level. This position entails a great deal of ambiguity which can be difficult. Those who are successful must be comfortable with collaborative decision-making, possess a growth mindset, be open to feedback, and approach the challenges with both confidence and humility.

Key Responsibilities

Backbone Facilitation

  • Serve as the ‘backbone staff’ for community school initiatives which build on the excellent work that has been done to date by ensuring newly launched strategies are well aligned, monitored for impact, and build involvement from partners.
  • Engage government agencies, post-secondary programs, service providers, school districts, universities, data partners, community members, and any other relevant partners in moving toward system change through meaningful action.
  • Ensure the partnership develops shared accountability to community-level outcomes and measures impact both at the program level and the community level.

Strategy Development and Implementation

  • Using the Results-Based Action Cycle, monitor strategies for impact tracking both outputs and outcomes.
  • Develop and communicate strategic plans that concisely communicate the mission, vision, objectives, and activities of the shared work under the Community School Strategy.
  • Work alongside research and evaluation partners to develop and implement data-driven processes and systems to inform the work.

Project Management

  • Follow up regularly with partners to ensure actions are completed between meetings.
  • Create and use process maps, flowcharts, logic models and/or other tools to ensure effective and efficient execution of the strategies/interventions developed by the partnership.
  • Ensure the partnership and working groups create specific performance measures for their interventions/strategies and activities to demonstrate their impact.
  • Prepare and deliver one-page-style briefings to UWNU Leadership and community partners
  • Conduct needs assessment and gap analyses to inform the progress of the work

Other Duties

  • Attend and participate in other local, regional, and state level meetings as requested such as the Utah Coalition for Community Schools.
  • Actively participate in work related to grant writing, fundraising, and sustainability of the initiative with corporate, foundation, and government representatives, as well as individual donors. Within the first 6 months, create a fundraising plan for the community schools work.
  • Execute grants to fidelity and lead reporting processes for grants with internal and external partners
