Reports to:  Director of Community Impact 

Status:  Full-time, permanent. Exempt.  

Location: Modesto, CA

Position Summary:  

The Capacity Building Manager is responsible for designing, implementing and overseeing capacity building work which includes both group trainings, workshops and individualized (one on one) coaching, training and convening community partners and agencies to improve their effectiveness. This position involves assessing community needs, collaborating with diverse stakeholders, professional development, and evaluation to strengthen local community organizations in Stanislaus County. This position is critical to the United Way mission as it advances the sustainability and effectiveness of our community partners, in turn, improves services for those most vulnerable and disinvested within our community. This role requires someone who is both a connector, networker, researcher, and facilitator who is committed to continuous learning and quality improvement. 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities: 

  • Stakeholder engagement and training: 
    • Facilitate all capacity building workshops (cohort based), training, and one on one coaching for community partners. 
    • Responsible for recruiting and screening trainers, subject matter experts and handling all enrollment and registration for workshops. 
    • Create and implement existing research-based capacity building tools to our partners. 
    • Cultivate relationships with new community partners that have a mission or intersection that overlaps with United Way’s mission and vision. 
    • Promote workshops and training through various channels (i.e. newsletters, presentations). 
    • Create various forms of learning-in person, digital, self-studies. 
    • In addition to regularly convening and training, ensure transparency by sharing shared measurement and progress toward shared goals. 
    • Exceptional networking and convening experience that engages a diverse group of cross sector partners including, but not limited to: small business development center, funders, government employees and community organizations. 
    • Working with other department leads to conduct presentations and support cross-department convenings and partner trainings. 
    • May include but not limited to internal program trainings, volunteer convenings and trainings (both United Way and partner volunteers) or working with other staff (i.e. DEI Manager) on DEI related capacity building. 
    • Special projects on a case-by-case basis relevant to position and skillset. 
  • Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning: 
    • Regularly research best practices, evidence-based practices and nonprofit innovations that align with the community needs and community partner focus areas for community solutions. 
    • Ability to understand the root causes of the community needs identified and create big picture strategies and initiatives to tackle complex social issues aligned with United Way’s mission. 
    • Provide presentations (both internally and externally) that share insight and knowledge gained. 
    • Create mixed-methods (i.e. surveys, qualitative interviews) measurement tools for sustainability and capacity building of community partners. 
    • Create and implement organization assessments to monitor capacity building and program outcomes. 
    • Conduct regular asset mapping to determine gaps or overlaps in services and increase efficiency. 
    • Prepare regular reports, outcomes, and maintain up-to-date documentation of program-related information.
    • Provide technical assistance to community partners. 
  • Reporting and Compliance 
    • Project management. 
    • Grant reporting and monitoring as well as supporting grant applications. 
    • Managing program budget, working alongside the COO and Director of Impact. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (master’s degree preferred)
  2. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  3. Strong project management skills and familiarity with project management tools.  
  4. Commitment to the mission and values of United Way.
  5. Current California Class C driver’s license and verifiable automobile insurance.

  1. A passion for working with nonprofit organizations and the community, demonstrated through their work, extracurricular activities, or volunteering.
  2. Strong facilitation/teaching skills (both in person and virtual in both large and small groups).
  3. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills.
  4. Visionary thinker with the ability to inspire and lead a team.
  5. Strong team orientation, positive attitude, integrity, self-motivation, and discipline.
  6. Attention to detail, reliability, and organizational skills.
  7. Ability to create content for both participant learning and for marketing and promotion of the work. 
  8. Extremely detail oriented.  
  9. Proven leadership experience in nonprofit management or a related field.
  10. Demonstrated ability to adapt to evolving environments and navigate ambiguity.
  11. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  12. Ability to assess the organization's needs and take initiative to meet those needs. 
  13. Ability to work independently, self-manage priorities and goals for projects, and consistently meet deadlines.
  14. Ability to connect and create strong and lasting relationships with partners and cultivate trust as a subject matter expert and collaborator. 

Environmental Conditions:

  • Indoors in a typical office environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, fumes, vibrations, and temperature changes.
  • Travel to offsite locations with exposure to noise, heat, and cold approximately.
  • Frequent computer use at designated workstation. 
  • Frequently working at a fast pace with unscheduled interruptions. 
  • Responsibilities may require an adjusted work schedule and evening/weekend hours to meet deadlines. 
  • May occasionally move (walk or drive) from one work location to another.

Physical Demands:

  • Attendance and punctuality.
  • Mobility within the office.
  • Ability to walk, sit, stand, and climb stairs.
  • Ability to work in hot and cold environments.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Ability to drive a vehicle. 

Benefits and Compensation: 

  • Salary range is $70,00-$80,000. 
  • Health benefits the first of the month following sixty (60) days of continuous employment. 
  • 401K option is available after ninety (90) days of continuous employment.
