Reporting to the Director of Social Media, this position supports the execution of a comprehensive community engagement strategy across UWW’s social media platforms. The intern will help enhance online engagement and cultivate a vibrant, inclusive digital community by building meaningful relationships with UWW’s social audience, encouraging interaction, and amplifying the impact of the United Way Network locally, nationally, and globally.We’re looking for a socially savvy, empathetic, and proactive communicator who is energized by the power of digital storytelling and passionate about building inclusive online communities that inspire action. The ideal candidate is a thoughtful communicator, creative problem-solver, and active social listener who thrives on engagement and can represent UWW’s brand voice with clarity and authenticity.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL DUTIESCommunity Engagement<ul><li>Serve as a frontline voice for UWW on social media by monitoring and responding to comments, DMs, and questions in a timely, respectful, and brand-aligned manner, under the guidance of the Social Media Director.</li><li>Recognize and elevate user-generated content, community stories, and positive user interactions that showcase United Way’s global impact.</li><li>Support audience growth and community cohesion by creating a welcoming and inclusive digital environment.</li><li>Help build a welcoming, inclusive digital environment that supports audience growth and community cohesion.</li></ul>Social Listening &amp; Engagement<ul><li>Monitor brand mentions, hashtags, and relevant social conversations to track sentiment, trends, feedback, and emerging issues.</li><li>Identify opportunities for proactive engagement to boost reach, relevance, and audience connection.</li><li>Provide timely insights and updates to the Social Team on community sentiment and relevant trends to help inform future content and engagement strategies.</li></ul>Relationship Building<ul><li>Cultivate relationships with key followers, advocates, and influencers to support long-term engagement and brand affinity.</li><li>Identify and surface testimonials, community stories, and social moments from the United Way Network for amplification.</li><li>Support storytelling and cross-promotion opportunities by identifying impactful work from local United Ways (LUWs) across UWW channels.</li></ul>Community-Driven Content &amp; Campaign Support<ul><li>Collaborate with the Social Team to source, pitch, and shape community-driven content that brings local and global impact stories to life.</li><li>Assist in the planning and execution of future social media campaigns with a strong focus on community engagement opportunities.&nbsp;</li><li>Ensure content aligns with United Way’s voice, mission, and social media strategic goals.</li></ul>Data, Reporting &amp; Optimization<ul><li>Track daily interactions, sentiment, and engagement metrics through Sprout Social’s Smart Inbox.</li><li>Contribute community insights to monthly analytics reports in partnership with the Social Media Director.</li><li>Use data and trends to recommend improvements in voice, engagement tactics, and content alignment.</li></ul>Trend Monitoring &amp; Innovation<ul><li>Stay current on platform updates, algorithm shifts, industry trends, and nonprofit digital marketing practices.</li><li>Suggest creative engagement formats and experiment with new ways to build community.</li><li>Apply a human-centered and inclusive lens to all social interactions and content ideas.</li></ul>EDUCATION/REQUIREMENTS<ul><li>Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in communications, social media, marketing, journalism, digital media, or a related field.</li><li>Demonstrated passion for social media and community building.</li><li>Strong written communication skills with sharp attention to detail.</li><li>Familiarity with major and emerging platforms including Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Facebook, X (Twitter), and Bluesky.</li><li>Experience with tools such as Sprout Social, Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar platforms is a plus.</li><li>A collaborative, team-oriented mindset and the ability to adapt quickly in a dynamic environment.</li><li>Strong cultural awareness and the ability to respectfully engage with a diverse, global audience.</li></ul>HELPFUL INFORMATION<ul><li>Weekly meetings and supplemental professional development workshops provided onsite</li><li>Complete a learning plan according to school’s requirements for those receiving a grade</li><li>Chance to meet and work with nonprofit subject matter experts and leaders at UWW</li><li>Free coffee &amp; tea onsite</li><li>Free parking at United Way Worldwide’s parking garage</li><li>Near Blue/Yellow Metro line (Braddock Metro Station) and then board Alexandria Free Dash bus that has stops directly across from our building</li></ul>LOCATIONThis internship takes place at the United Way Worldwide office at 701 N.
