Workplace Development Specialist

Summary of Position: In collaboration with the Development team, the workplace development specialist is responsible for planning and driving the annual workplace campaign plan and for creating and maintaining relationships to advance fundraising results. This position has primary responsibility for employee and corporate giving campaigns including year-round stewardship efforts and strategic volunteer opportunities to retain and grow campaign revenue.



  • Represents Berkshire United Way as needed in the community: within workplace campaigns and by attending special events and community activities.
  • Develops strategic partnerships with other United Ways, not for profit organizations, agency leaders, and other organizations as needed to strengthen relationships and maximize results.
  • Assesses and takes responsibility for own performance; seeks and responds to feedback.
  • Maintains high ethical and accountability standards.
  • Provides staff leadership and support to both internal and external UW committees and coordinates special projects as assigned.


  • Cultivates community support for Berkshire United Way by developing and maintaining positive relationships with local organizations, businesses, and individuals.
  • With Development team, creates and executes comprehensive plan for annual giving campaign, including year-round cultivation and stewardship efforts.
  • Researches, plans, and implements new fundraising approaches in response to changing circumstances and revise development plan as needed to respond to changes in workplace employment and campaign potential.
  • As a member of the Development Team, identifies and cultivates new sources of revenue, including corporate, foundation, and professional support.
  • Manages the training and supervision of Workplace Campaign Executives and Employee Campaign Coordinators.
  • Establishes reporting and documentation procedures that ensure a high level of accountability, is responsive to the need to monitor the campaign’s progress and provides documentation for evaluation.
  • Collaborates with Marketing to create campaign collateral.
  • Ensures correspondence and research between United Way Worldwide, Global Corporate Leaders, Berkshire United Way, and other related parties is completed in a timely manner.
  • Maintains current knowledge of community political, social, and economic factors which may affect resource development and fundraising.
  • Participates in a team effort to organize and execute Berkshire United Way development events.
  • Facilitates special events.

Evaluation and Measurement

  • Evaluates and analyzes all campaign efforts against results and develops appropriate strategies.
  • Conducts statistical measurements and analyses of the annual campaign and interprets that information to advance all development activities.
  • Maintains accurate data on volunteers, including but not limited to, Workplace Campaign Executives and Employee Campaign Coordinators.

Staff Support to Selected Committees and Governing Bodies

  • Provides indirect, secondary staff support as required to:
    • Board of Directors
    • Development Committee and Special Events Committees
    • Marketing Committee

Staff Support to United Way Programs

  • As assigned by the President.

Schedule Flexibility and Travel Requirement

  • Requires flexible schedule to occasionally attend events that may occur in the early morning, evening, and weekends.
  • To fulfill the responsibilities of the position, travel to various companies and/or agencies is required within and outside Berkshire County. Employee must have valid driver’s license and availability of a motor vehicle. Overnight travel to various seminars, courses, conferences, etc., may also be an opportunity.


A. EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university. Equivalent related experience and training will be considered.

B. EXPERIENCE: Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in fundraising or a related field, such as sales, marketing, advertising, or public relations is desirable. Experience with managing volunteers is preferred.

C. KNOWLEDGE: Concepts and principles of fundraising strategies, knowledge of community political, social, business, and economic factors, group processes, and volunteerism.

D. SKILLS:               

  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills and experience.
  • Strong written, verbal communication skills, and public speaking.
  • Proficiency with Windows operating system: MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, experience with social media, Constant Contact, Survey Monkey, and donor database management.
  • Focused sales/marketing experience with emphasis on customer relationship building and/or customer service.
  • Understanding of fundraising including basic sales skills, proper stewardship, direct mail, and other approaches to generating revenue.
  • Understanding of non-profit sector desirable, including knowledge of governance, accountability, and management.
  • Ability to manage several projects simultaneously, track results, meets deadlines, and maintain strong attention to details.
  • Must participate effectively on teams and offer ideas to enhance the organization.
  • Must have a positive attitude, offer strong self-motivation, and demonstrate a willingness to commit to the values of Berkshire United Way.
