Volunteer Engagement Manager

Responsible for the management and implementation of engagement strategies that support United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County goals and support volunteer recruitment of nonprofit and school partners.  

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Manage the internal volunteer program including skills-based volunteerism 

  • Volunteer recruitment, communication, and tracking for the organization

  • Support internal and external partners with volunteer engagement best practices

  • Project management and planning for the Back to School Supply Drive

  • Project management and planning for the Holiday Book Drive

  • Maintain authentic relationships and trust with external partners

  • Deliver volunteer experiences that are embedded with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion considerations and strategies in all aspects of volunteerism with emphasis on youth, diverse and community-based audiences

  • Provide direct supervision and coaching to the Volunteer Engagement Coordinator and assist with logistical support as needed

  • Assist with the development, management, and communications around the logistics of individual and ongoing volunteer engagement with the emphasis on the Bold Community Goal 

  • Manage and implement strategic uses of the Get Connected volunteer database/website

  • Ensures data is entered into the Get Connected volunteer database

  • Coordinate with the Marketing and Communications department regarding communication strategies for different audiences and opportunities to segment the volunteer base and target specific asks to individuals

  • Coordinate remote volunteer projects (portable, build a kit)  

  • Responsible for organizing and inventorying the supplies in the shed storage area

  • Support events and experiences as needed

  • Participate in cross-departmental workgroups as needed

  • Participate in Points of Light, United Way Worldwide, and other national, regional and state volunteer organizations to stay current and connected in the field of volunteer management 

  • Perform other related duties as assigned 

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in planning and implementing volunteer engagement opportunities

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends as needed 

  • Ability to lift 20-30 pounds 

  • Valid driver’s license with a driving record that meets insurance requirements and access to reliable transportation

  • Deep commitment to UWABC's guiding principles and ability to model those principles

Technical Skills, Abilities and other Requirements

  • Proficient with computers and software, including Google Suite, Microsoft Office and Zoom

  • Ability to quickly learn and use a variety of other software platforms (e.g. Get Connected, Airtable, Asana) 

  • Ability to work and build relationships with diverse staff, volunteers, community members, governments, philanthropic organizations, donors, community partners and corporate partners

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish fact and draw conclusions

  • Ability to manage a variety of projects 

  • Ability to prioritize tasks by importance and deadline. Adjusts priorities as situations change

  • Ability to work independently and in teams

  • Interpersonal skills with the ability to manage sensitive situations 

  • Ability to quickly learn new systems and skills 

  • Ability to communicate (oral and written) in English, Spanish a plus

  • Experience with public speaking preferred

  • At least 1 year of supervision experience preferred

  • Frequent work in the community at volunteer projects

  • Occasional work outside of normal business hours

  • Drive a vehicle within the region

  • Moderate office noise level 

This position is exempt from overtime regulations.

Hybrid work environment: a mix of office, remote, and community settings.

Reports To: Volunteer Engagement Director 

Supervises:  1 temporary employee and volunteers

Hours: 40/week.  

Salary and Benefits: $40,500 - $44,974 plus full benefits, including: paid vacation, sick and personal leave; employer contributions to 401(k), contributions to health, dental and vision insurance benefits, life and disability insurance, employee assistance program, lifestyle spending account, and coaching and support.
