Position: Vice President, Education

 

Reports to: SVP & Chief Impact Officer

Position Description: The Vice President (VP), Education plays a strategic leadership role within the Community Impact (CI) department and reports directly to the VP and Chief Impact Officer. The VP will play a pivotal role, in partnership with the President & CEO, in the strategic identification and development of education programs and initiatives. The VP will lead key strategic initiatives such as: the Interdisciplinary Pre-K - 12 Black Studies Curriculum, ReadNYC, UWNYC Education Equity Cabinet, and College, Career and Civic Engagement: 

 

Primary Responsibilities will include:

  • The design, implementation, and evaluation of UWNYC’s all education equity focused programs.
  • Leading and managing external relationships with local and national partners and consultants. 
  • Leading, staffing, managing, and developing a team that will partner with community agencies in the design, resourcing, and implementation of all education equity initiatives.
  • Ensuring the sound financial management of the department within the organization’s budgeted guidelines.
  • Participating in all fundraising and resource development efforts to support the education work in close partnership with the Resource Development and Marketing & Communications departments.

 

 

Job Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership

The VP of Education plays a key strategic leadership role within the Community Impact department, as well for the organization and in the community. This person is responsible for the design, resourcing, implementation, and evaluation of UWNYC’s education equity initiatives.

 

Specifically, the VP will be expected to:

  • Work closely with the SVP and Chief Impact Officer in the articulation of program strategy
  • Identify and design education programs and initiatives in alignment with UWNYC’s mission, vision, and values
  • Plan how best to establish research and evaluation frameworks and processes for the education strategies
  • Work closely with peers in the Resource Development and Marketing & Communications Departments to ensure strategic alignment between education programs and fundraising and communications objectives
  • Build strategic relationships with relevant community partners, stakeholders, city, state, and national government as well as corporate partners.
  • Convene and lead citywide strategy and collective impact work around education equity

Team Leadership

The VP, Education will lead a team of internal and external resources to partner with community agencies in the design, resourcing and implementation of CI’s education equity initiatives. This person will be responsible for staffing, managing, and developing this team.

 

Specifically, the VP will be expected to:

  • Structure and communicate clear and appropriate roles for internal and external resources to support the design, delivery, and evaluation of education initiatives in the community
  • Build talent by establishing and communicating performance standards and assessing and developing internal resources to ensure that they meet those standards
  • Facilitate effective cross-functional teamwork with all Department staff and community partners
  • Source and manage the use of external resources as needed

 

Program Leadership

The VP, Education is responsible for directing all aspects of UWNYC’s education initiatives and programs.

 

Specifically, the VP will be expected to:

  • Develop and direct the UWNYC’s education equity campaigns
  • Actively promote, with the support of Marketing & Communications and Resource Development, the work of all UWNYC education programs to partner agencies, funders, the communities we serve, and the general public

The VP, Education will be expected to inspire the trust and confidence of others on the team, in the organization, from the Board of Directors and all stakeholder organizations with whom the person interacts.  The position requires the ability to lead and collaborate with a diverse team of professionals, including direct reports, Community Impact staff, functional departments organization-wide, and our community partners.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience:

  • Advanced degree in education or related field
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible positions in community program management, including:
    • Facilitation and management of education initiatives
    • Project design, implementation, and evaluation
    • Building, leading, and mentoring a team of program specialists, both internal and external
    • Budget Management
  • Deep understanding of education system, and political landscape, key stakeholders, agencies, and providers; context within New York City preferred
  • Excellent writing, editing, verbal, and presentation skills
  • Excellent judgment and creative problem-solving skills
