Overview

United Way of Northern New Jersey is seeking a Senior Director of Creative Development to support its work to achieve racial and financial equity for those individuals and families struggling to make ends meet, including ALICE® (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) and those in poverty.

Broad Function/Purpose:

This important role serves as the creative lead for United Way of Northern New Jersey. The Senior Director, Creative Development leads a department that brings the organization’s brands, products/services, events, campaigns and more to life through powerful multi-channel creative. In doing so, the Senior Director ensures creative is delivered seamlessly, and with a strong internal customer orientation. To be most successful, the Senior Director, Creative Services must be a balance of a big and innovative thinker, a skilled and willing doer, a builder and manager of process and protocols, and a leader. 

Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

Vision

  • Collaborating with the Senior Director of Marketing, the Chief Experience Officer and others, the Senior Director, Creative Services will develop and pursue a vision for how UWNNJ and its brands/sub-brands are presented creatively to maximize impact

Department Design & Execution

  • Conduct a rigorous assessment of the Creative Services Department including the creative development processes, policies, roles, and talent. Craft a vision for an optimal operation. Execute against that vision, and monitor and refine the Department operation as needed to optimize 
  • Build, monitor, and enforce creative development policies/procedures
  • Refine and manage creative development process including
    • timeline development
    • creating standards for number of creative options presented during each round
    • creating standards around when to use the creative brief
  • Develop and execute a system for trafficking multiple creative assets simultaneously including prioritization, tracking, communication to keep key stakeholders informed of progress, and resource allocation (eg when to use freelancers)
  • Develop and manage the Department budget, and maintain a full understanding of other budgets across the organization available for creative development
  • Manage the organization’s use of creative freelancers including cultivating/maintaining relationships, creating/monitoring formal agreements, and effective communication and integration

Creative Development

  • Co-own, with Marketing & Communications colleagues, the development and implementation of creative
  • Develop creative from concept to execution that captures attention, drives perception, and inspires desired behaviors
  • Implement processes that inspire innovative thinking including utilizing brainstorms, inspiration tours, and insight-mining activities. In developing and executing creative, ensure brand consistency, audience insights, and business objectives are always fully considered
  • Develop creative assets across a variety of mediums including but not limited to powerpoint, print, outdoor, signage, digital – website & social
  • Produce video assets that can be utilized via multiple channels such as online and at events
  • When necessary, review creative developed by team and provide guidance, coaching, and, if appropriate, approval

Department Leadership/Development

  • Lead team of creatives (internal and freelancers) ensuring focus, prioritization, consistency, effective project management, and outstanding communication
  • Coach team, and help develop skills and capabilities
  • Provide opportunities for staff growth, development, and skill building
  • Develop Department ensuring structure and functions are optimized
  • Help Creative Team overcome obstacles that arise within a project and offer solutions

Customer Service

  • Develop standards for Creative Development Department customer service, and ensure those standards are always met

Other Duties

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s Degree preferred in graphic design, advertising, marketing, or art
  • Advertising agency experience preferred, but not required
  • 10+ years of related progressive experience with 5+ years of leading a creative department
  • Expert in design of creative assets across all forms of digital, print, and out-of-home
  • Strong experience preferred in development of videos including video editing and production
  • Experience with creative copywriting, print production, photo shoots, and story boarding
  • Expert within the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc.)
  • Full understanding of design fundamentals and typography
  • Ability to work on several projects simultaneously
  • Excellent communication, presentation, problem-solving, and project-management skills

Work Environment:

  • This job function uses standard office equipment, such as computers, phones, printer, and photocopiers
  • Hybrid: Primarily remote, some office meetings with staff, board volunteers, vendors, and donors
