Position Overview:  The Senior Director, Government Relations reports to the Vice President, Strategic Initiatives. This role is primarily responsible for government giving and relationship management, providing leadership to advance UWNYC’s strategic fundraising priorities through government funding support and stewarding strong government partnerships on the City, State, and Federal level.

 

The Senior Director, Government Relations (SDGR) will be responsible for drafting thoughtful, compelling applications for major government funding opportunities, working collaboratively with key internal stakeholders to manage government relationships on the City, State, and Federal levels, and working collaboratively with program staff to obtain data and monitor the impact of programs funded by government dollars. The SDGR will also be responsible for tracking deadlines, entering data, and reporting results for all government giving, as well as identifying and researching new funding opportunities as resources are allocated and announced. They will assist the President’s Office, Community Impact, and Strategic Initiatives teams in the development of external-facing proposals and materials for government partners. This role works specifically with leaders and team members cross-departmentally and relies on expert and consistent communication to execute cross-functional proposals and projects in a timely manner.

 

The successful candidate will be a strong project manager and writer, who is extremely organized and highly motivated. The SDGR must have experience applying for New York City, New York State, and/or Federal Government funding opportunities and appropriations. They must be comfortable and confident working with external organizations and elected officials. They should be connected to United Way’s mission and inspired to enhance one of the country’s best-known nonprofit brands. They must be passionate about racial equity and social justice and motivated to break down racial inequities and barriers for low-income communities of color across New York City.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Working across the organization, own the tracking and project management of all government funding opportunities to ensure that resources are secured to achieve growth targets for programmatic products.
  • Develop and maintain feedback mechanisms to ensure that the President’s Office and relevant staff are kept current regarding all strategic government partners.
  • Work with the AdvocateNYC team to build strategic relationship building plans for government agencies and elected officials.
  • Oversee a portfolio of government partners and elected officials and conduct stewardship and cultivation activities that build, maintain, and strengthen relationships in partnership with UWNYC’s lobbying firm and AdvocateNYC.
  • Write letters of inquiry, grant proposals, reports, and acknowledgment letters.
  • Ensure compliance with all funder requirements working collaboratively with Operations, Finance, Legal, and Administration.
  • Identify and research new prospective government funding opportunities in collaboration with the Manager, Prospect Research.
  • Collaborate with program staff to inform proposals and reports.
  • Collaborate with the Finance department to develop budgets and other financial reporting.
  • Collaborate with Administration and Compliance staff to manage necessary database records, files, reports, and source materials pertinent to foundation and government activities. 
  • Collaborate with Marketing & Communications to develop and share impact content.
  • Maintain a grants calendar that ensures all government funding deadlines are met with sufficient time for input, develop quarterly internal reports, and facilitate regular outreach to funders.
  • Co-lead relationship with UWNYC’s lobbying firm.
  • Other duties as required.

 

Skills, Knowledge and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master’s degree preferred. 
  • 5-7 years of experience in nonprofit fundraising, government relations, grant-writing and/or project management; programmatic experience in education, hunger, health equity, criminal justice, and/or economic mobility.
  • A sense of energy, ownership, and personal connection to the work of UWNYC, the communities we serve, and our staff.
  • Familiarity with grants.gov and other complex funding portals for government opportunities.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills, highly organized and detail oriented.
  • Ability to write structured, articulate, and persuasive proposals.  
  • Adept at translating programmatic products and outcomes in order to communicate UWNYC’s value in the community and build a case for support.
  • Possess, and be motivated to continuously develop, a learning, network, and equity mindset.
  • Innovative thinker with a track record for translating strategy into action plans and results.
  • Astute listener and able to understand and incorporate stakeholder’s needs and interests.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and quickly “change gears” as needed.
  • Excellent time management skills, with the ability to handle multiple projects with high attention to detail. 
  • Possess positive, “can do” attitude.
