Job Announcement – Senior Copywriter

Job Summary:

As the Senior Copywriter, chief content strategist, and newsletter editor, the Senior Copywriter leads the effort to communicate and brings to life the United Way of King County value proposition across all marketing platforms and materials. This position writes copy, creates consistent and strategic content for the UWKC website and for electronic communications, printed collateral, and advertising. This individual is the key driver in articulating the vision for UWKC’s racial equity work to become an anti-racist organization.

The Senior Copywriter reports to UWKC’s Communications Director and works closely with the VP of Brand Marketing and Advertising to execute materials in a compelling way. UWKC’s Brand department is a fast-paced work environment that requires a high volume of work product to support our strategic fundraising efforts.

The recruiting salary range is 79,500- $ 84,500 DOE. This position is open until filled; first consideration will be given to applications received within two weeks of posting.

Essential Duties:

  • Works closely with the Communications Director on annual communication themes and content planning.
  • Serves as a key player in weekly editorial meetings and maintains familiarity with organizational positions and communication objectives.
  • Writes and edits electronic newsletters.
  • Works with staff and freelance designers to develop and present creative concepts that deliver to the creative brief.
  • Creates and revises marketing material. 
  • Ensures the accuracy and completeness of all communications material for public distribution.
  • Manages style guide and consults and advises staff on writing and editorial issues.
  • Creates content to ensure that UWKC’s racial equity goals and organizational priorities are represented in the appropriate context.
  • Ensures that racial equity is integrated across all communications, printed collateral, and advertising. 
  • Serves as a key driver in articulating the vision for UWKC’s racial equity work to become an anti-racist organization.

Core Competencies:

  • Demonstrated advanced creative, technical, marketing, journalistic, and advertising writing skills.
  • Proven excellent oral communication, interviewing, and grammar skills.
  • Demonstrated intermediate knowledge of collateral and online production processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, implement, monitor, and control project work assignments.
  • Proven strong organizational, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated ability using discretion and independent judgement.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Intermediate Microsoft Office skills. 
  • Experience engaging in difficult conversations with individuals and groups around race, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Solid communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills and excels at building relationships in any environment and enjoys connecting with people and diverse audiences. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of racial justice and cultural differences; an understanding of systemic and institutional racial bias; an ability to demonstrate sensitivity to issues and concerns of BIPOC communities and other diverse groups; and the facility to ensure that racial equity principles is integrated across all areas of work.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, generative, and multiracial work environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to thoughtfully work with teams and stakeholders to resolve issues, including competing demands, sensitive situations, and conflicts with other groups.
  • Strong commitment to UWKC’s racial equity work and demonstrated interest in social justice.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Communications, English, Marketing, Public Relations, or related field.  At least five years’ copywriting, marketing, or creative services experience.

Experience and understanding of systemic and institutional racial bias. Sensitivity to issues and concerns of communities of color and other diverse groups including working with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds highly desired.  Deep passion for creating an inclusive and equitable work environment required.

Ability to speak other languages desired.
