President and CEO


United Way of Lancaster County (UWLC) is 95 years old in 2020.  In 2014/2015, UWLC became the first United Way in the Country to move 100% to Collective Impact.  Funding and backbone support were given to Collective Impact partnerships who are working together to address 4 Bold Goals:

By 2025:

  1. 100% of our children will enter kindergarten ready to learn
  2. 100% of students and adults will have post-secondary credentials
  3. Decrease individuals and families living in poverty by 50%
  4. 100% of individuals, children and families will have a medical home


After 4 years of funding collaboratives working together to address these goals, we are beginning to see the needle move in a positive direction. 


Our major focus for the next 5 to 10 years is to continue to fund collaboratives who move the needle on these bold goals. To do this we have an urgent need to increase our Fundraising in new and innovative ways, as well as continue to advance our Marketing and Technology efforts,  and focus on Individuals, Affinity Groups, Corporations and Donors.


UWLC also operates a very effective Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, with 11,000 tax returns completed in 2019, saving tax payers over $3 million in free tax preparation.  We also operate 211 for several counties as well as a centralized Volunteer Center. 


Our Board is enthusiastically aligned and eager to think outside the box.




The President/CEO is the leader of the organization, establishing a vision for Collective Impact that is achieved through the efforts of a diverse team of high-performing leaders, staff and volunteers alike. The President/CEO is the Chief Mobilizer; s/he leverages the power of relationships and networks, and works across private, public and corporate sectors to improve conditions in the community. The President/CEO possesses a high level of broad business and management skills and is effective at generating resources and financial support for the organization. The President/CEO is dedicated to shared and measurable goals for the common good – creating, resourcing, scaling and leveraging strategies for broad investment and impact. The President/CEO is the steward of brand and understands his/her role in growing and protecting the reputation of United Way. S/he is responsible for building trust in United Way and its relevance in the community. S/he values network and strives to leverage United Way’s breadth of community presence, relationships, and strategy.




The major responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:


Collective Impact

The President/CEO is responsible for the overall impact of UWLC on the community, with emphasis on increasing its capacity to drive the impact agenda. UWLC is currently in the 2nd year of 3-year Collective Impact grants. Working closely with the Board, the President/CEO will craft and adapt the strategy to achieve this increased impact, including raising the funds to support it. Currently work is focusing on analysis of results, and the overall effectiveness of our grant model in preparation for a new grant cycle to start in July 2021. S/he will establish and build relationships with top leaders in the community, including those representing the highest levels in business, government and non-profit sectors.


Resource Development

The President/CEO is charged to drive key results in fundraising and leading the strategic

implementation of a new Philanthropy model that will allow us to engage our community in new and       

innovation ways; to identify, cultivate and solicit prospective donors and key leaders of prospective

new corporate partners; to leverage personal and professional contacts and relationships into fundraising opportunities; and to promote a culture of fundraising in the organization, both at the staff and board level.


Marketing and Communications

The President/CEO is responsible for the overall marketing and Communication strategy for UWLC. We are currently focusing on new and innovative ways to communicate our message in ways that resonate on multigenerational levels within the community; finding new ways to show that systems change is necessary and vital to improving lives in our community.  The President and CEO is responsible for being a compelling voice for communicating the organization’s vision and mission.


Strategic Management

The President/CEO serves as the principal resource to the Board of Directors and its key committees and gives strong direction in policy formulation and interpretation. S/he partners with the Board of Directors and the UWLC Senior Leadership team to craft organizational goals and develops strategies to ensure that they are achieved. S/he ensures coordination and alignment of all United Way activities to strategic direction in the areas of collective impact, resource development, and staff alignment. Strategic Planning will be a focus in 2020.  


Organization Management

The President/CEO is accountable for building and leading high-performing teams, ensuring all teams are aligned and collaborating to achieve organizational results.  S/he maintains accountability for the operational and fiscal integrity of the organization within policies set by the Board of Directors.   The President/CEO assesses organizational capacity to implement strategies and identify gaps in systems and staffing; directly supervises Senior Leadership positions and establishes individual goals; works with the Vice President of Finance to manage organizational spending, monitor budget compliance, and mitigate financial risks; and ensures that UWLC  goals of inclusiveness and diversity among staff and volunteers are met.
