Cedar Valley United Way (CVUW) began in Black Hawk County in 1923 with a campaign that raised $63,484 for a select group of organizations.  This collective work was based upon the idea of the common good raises up the entire community.  The organization has had several name changes over the years, landing on Cedar Valley United Way in 1983.  A 30-member Board of Directors oversees operations which are staffed with 6 full time professionals.  Community Assessments have defined the focus of the Community Impact.  This impact includes directives in the areas of health, financial stability, education, emergency and basic needs and social innovation.  The organization has raised over $122 million since its inception.

Description:

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) provides vision and strategic leadership to the Cedar Valley United Way (CVUW) to ensure that the vision and mission are well understood; community needs are effectively identified; and that the organizational mission is communicated consistently to staff, board members and volunteers so that they can effectively support the advancement of the CVUW mission. The CEO serves as the symbol of the organization and is committed to providing the highest quality services and sound financial operations; working in collaboration with others in the communities served; and assuring that CVUW is a recognized leader as a premier model for social change through its funding allocations and programs.  The CEO will be highly visible and active in the development of meaningful partnerships within both the public and private sectors throughout the community.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

ADMINISTRATION AND FINANCE

  • Provides overall management, planning and leadership of the CVUW.  Reports directly to the Board of Directors. Oversees and strategically directs the organization as it makes determinations and facilitates the organization’s overall mission.
  • Manages daily operations. Recruits, retains and manages a highly qualified staff. Creates and facilitates a work-place that motivates staff with a team-based culture that strives for excellence, innovation and results.
  • Makes determinations and facilitates the organization’s overall compliance with laws and regulations to ensure CVUW is in good standing as a charitable organization under state and federal law and preserves its tax status.
  • Responsible for all aspects of fiscal management, prepares and manages the annual budget approved by the Board of Directors; oversees staff responsible for financial management and overall management of the organization’s assets within stated financial policy and in accordance with nonprofit accounting principles and practices; and establishes and monitors appropriate procedures, controls and reporting and communications to the Board of directors.
  • Ability to read and understand financial documents.
  • Assesses and assures financial feasibility to current programs and services as well as all new initiatives being considered by CVUW based on existing resources and changing community needs and priorities. Continually searches for more affordable ways of conducting business without sacrificing quality performance.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

  • Supports the Chair, Board leadership, and committee chairs to establish and monitor governance and organizational policies.
  • Oversees and directs strategic planning and implementation by working closely and collaboratively with the Board of Directors; executes strategic plans; monitors the strategies and makes recommendations for changes and updates.
  • Serves as professional advisor to the Board of Directors to support and sustain its leadership role and assist its obligation to make fully informed decisions that are fully reflective of the CVUW mission.
  • Provides assistance to the Board of Directors in its ongoing recruitment and retention of members with the particular skills and knowledge that are useful to the CVUW’s organizational development.
  • Coordinates Board of Directors meetings and provides continuous information, and insight regarding all internal operations and any relevant issues.

FUND DEVELOPMENT

  • Through aggressive fundraising in concert with the board of Directors and staff, leads fund development including but not limited to the annual campaign and fundraising activities and workplace giving programs.
  • Cultivates relationships with foundations and leads the pursuit of grants and contracts where appropriate.
  • Assures strong and consistent revenue streams and builds a reserve for long-term sustainability.
  • Networks actively with professional colleagues to support and advance the CVUW mission.

COMMUNITY INVESTMENT

  • Spokesperson for CVUW and leads visibility efforts in the community. Works to achieve and maintain a positive, viable community image, assuring that the CVUW’s mission is well known and that it is viewed as a valued contributor in the community.
  • Serves as a confident, articulate and persuasive advocate for the CVUW to increase its visibility with private and public human service organizations and associations, advocates, lawmakers, government staff and agencies, the media, funders and key community representatives.
  • Directs contract negotiations with government agencies, subcontractors and any other outside organizations.

Education Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred.

Experience Required:

The CEO will have at least seven years of successful and responsible leadership experience in a diverse organization. Experience as a high level executive in nonprofit management preferred. • The successful candidate will have solid general management skills including strategic planning, marketing, fundraising, and personnel management experience. • They will have an understanding of governance and working with a Board of Directors. • Proven experience demonstrating the ability to build and lead an organization is critical. • Successful track record in presenting and selling an organization with the intent of increasing its recognition, utilization of its services and understanding of its mission, raising funds, and broadening its advocacy and political agenda. • Successful track record in major fundraising especially in areas of personal meetings and solicitation of individual donors, foundations and corporations. • Demonstrated ability as an empowering, visionary leader with the talent to read internal and external pulses and the willingness to take calculated risks in forming innovative, collaborative efforts both within the CAUW and the communities served. • Excellent oral and written communications skills and the ability to relate to diverse audiences and populations. • Demonstrated ability to inspire and motivate staff; create a dynamic work environment, be decisive yet inclusive, and model and teach a philosophy that encourages integrity, growth, creativity, appropriate autonomy, accountability and teamwork among staff.

Salary:

Commensurate with experience.  Starting range $80,000 - $120,000.  Benefit package including health insurance, life and disability insurance, paid time off (PTO) and retirement plan.
