United Way of Massachusetts Bay & Merrimack Valley seeks Part Time Out of School Time Social and Emotional Learning Coach for Summer Learning Collaborative
Reports to: Director, Community Impact, United Way (Director of SLC)
Background & Overview:
Massachusetts leads the nation in K-12 academic achievement results. However, these impressive results are not universal across the Commonwealth. Students from low-income families demonstrate proficiency in math and reading at roughly half the rate of their more affluent peers. This achievement gap is in part a result of a growing opportunity gap between low-income youth and their higher-income peers in terms of access to learning opportunities outside of school. Low-income children have fewer opportunities to spend time learning outside of school in safe, supportive environments that allow them to build relationships with caring adults and their peers. After school and summer programs positively impact student achievement and attitudes toward learning, improve youth relationships with peers and adults, mitigate risk behaviors, and promote the development of positive self-identity, leadership, and other critical skills in order to ensure that youth succeed in school and life.
United Way has a history of investing in out-of-school time (OST) programs that positively impact student achievement and attitudes toward learning, improve youth relationships with peers and adults, mitigate risk behaviors, and promote the development of positive self-identity, leadership, and other critical skills in order to ensure that youth succeed in school and life. In addition to funding, United Way has created a number of initiatives to support the development of specific, critical skills to support youth in college and career readiness.
United Way’s Summer Learning Collaborative (SLC) strives to foster social-emotional learning (SEL) during the summer months, especially among vulnerable, school-age children and by strengthening the capacity of Out-of-School Time (OST) programs in incorporating SEL strategies into programming and measuring student proficiency/growth in SEL competencies.
