Mission Advancement Communications Associate

Summary & Scope:

Manage planning, development and implementation of United Way of St. Joseph County's organization wide marketing plan, marketing strategies, marketing communications, and public relations activities. The Marketing and Communications Associate creates electronic and print communications that connects people with the impact United Way makes on the lives of people in St. Joseph County. This position creates and designs pieces that include e-mail campaigns, brochures, fliers, invitations, direct mail and more. The Marketing and Communications Associate will ensure that all materials are consistent with United Way brand guidelines. 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Primary project manager ensuring that an organizational wide marketing plan is developed, executed and updated annually with organizational benchmarks and goals to staff
  • Work with vendors as needs exceed our capabilities and/or capacity
  • Design all organizational print materials including posters, brochures, fliers, mailings, invitations etc., including digital designs and features for website, social mediums and social media
  • Manage project scheduling to ensure materials and projects meet deadlines
  • Utilize the United Way Team to determine best solutions for communication opportunities
  • Maintain and update
  • Working knowledge of Constant Contact
  • Maintain and update social media accounts
  • Take photographs at events and other venues to be utilized for marketing and donor engagement
  • Take video for storytelling on electronic mediums
  • Manage video / photographs on the share drive
  • Create and distribute media advisories and press releases to all media for news, notifications and events
  • Oversee placement of organizational marketing including TV, radio, print and billboards
  • Develop and create scripts and power points for events and other organization functions
  • Develop or review letters and other written communications as required by the CEO and staff for organizational messaging compliance and consistency
  • Manage, recruit, and train local agencies on United Way of St. Joseph County’s volunteer website, The Volunteer Connection, to maximize its usage and to provide value for volunteers and participating non-profits.
  • Support and manage all event planning committees
  • Manage and organize all details as they relate to United Way of St. Joseph County events
  • Work organizationally to support and strengthen the local United Way brand and our entire team

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field (communications, public relations, marketing, graphic design, advertising, communications design, or visual arts)
  • Minimum of two years experience in related field
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines required.Ability to lead and motivate others effectively preferred
  • Proven organizational, written, verbal and creative design skills, attention to detail and follow through
  • Demonstrated ability to work on computer with Microsoft Office Products, Adobe Illustrator & Adobe Photoshop for desktop publishing and layout/design
  • Must have knowledge of basic HTML and be able to fluently update creative and content on a CMS.
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Experience with advertising, print and electronic media preferred
  • Portfolio required

  • Possess a valid driver’s license and insured motor vehicle



Work Environment:

The candidate should be able to show the ability to work in a fast-paced, sometimes stressful environment with a high adaptability to change. Ability to work around loud noises. Ability to help deliver materials to companies/agencies. Ability to attend United Way events during evenings and weekends. Ability to clean and maintain a clean desk and common work areas.


Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. Must have the ability to handle stress. Ability to lift and carry 5-20 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include appropriate vision needed to drive as required for a valid driver’s license.  Ability to move files to filing cabinet.  Ability to stand and/or sit and file.  Must have reliable transportation.
