The Marketing & Engagement Director leads professional fund development, engagement and marketing efforts that support and are consistent with the strategic direction and policies of United Way of Greater Lorain County (UWGLC). The Director develops, implements and continuously improves the fund development, marketing and communications, and volunteer engagement operational plans and processes.

•    Leads all fund development strategies and tactics, including annual workplace campaigns, major individual donors and corporate and community giving.

•    Directs moves management process to cultivate relationships with community and corporate leaders to secure major individual gifts. 

•    Develops and implements gratitude plan, communicating appreciation and recognition for individuals and organizations investing in UWGLC’s mission.

•    Plans and supports fundraising special events, annual campaign events, volunteer projects, campaign presentations and leadership donor events, including managing use of MobileCause platform.

•    Organizes volunteer leadership for fund development including recruitment, training, support, key messaging and implementation of strategy.

•    Supports the execution of direct mail tactics including analysis, reporting and execution.

•    Oversees efficacy of donor database (Andar360) and volunteer database (Volunteers for Salesforce).

•    Assists Volunteer Engagement Manager in coordinating advocacy volunteers and maintaining Socxo platform.

•    Supports Volunteer Engagement Manager in recruitment, retention, and recognition of all individual volunteers and volunteer networks (Free Tax Prep and ServeUnited).

•    Maintains confidentiality of individual and corporate donors.


•    Increases the visibility and positive image of UWGLC and awareness of its mission as a community impact organization. 

•    Maintains integrity of marketing, public relations, and communication plans. 

•    Manages website updates and maintenance (WordPress), including integration with other services such as Salesforce and Airtable.

•    Supervises marketing staff on all aspects of external marketing projects which may include the following: advertising, newsletters, collateral, annual reports, website development and maintenance, social network media platforms, direct mail, and publication design and printing.

•    Creates a highly visible community profile through community relations activities.   Cultivates positive relationships with community leaders by attending social events, involvement with service organizations and other community activities.

•    Leads media relations activities that build trusting relationships with media representatives. Responds to requests for information and arranges interviews with appropriate United Way representatives.  Creates and distributes news releases to print, online and broadcast media outlets.

•    Develops strategic messaging plans. Ensures consistency of all outgoing messages with communications strategies.  Assists staff, United Way board members and others through training and direct communication.  This may include writing and editing speeches as assigned by the President/CEO.

•    Conceptualizes theme of annual fundraising presentation, including coordination and script writing of brand video.

•    Represents United Way at public events, including speaking engagements, display exhibits and other public relations activities.  

•    Creates and directs implementation of comprehensive crisis communications plan, administers issues management and communication with key internal and external audience (Board Members and media).  Serves as spokesperson in absence of the President/CEO.  Plans and responds to crisis communication activities by analyzing crisis or potential crisis and communicating with media and internal groups.  Annually reviews and updates crisis plan.


•    Supports an effective marketing and engagement staff through proactive supervision, growth, support and encouragement.

•    Oversees and administers budget for marketing and engagement functions.

•    Cultivates positive working relationships with all community collaboratives.

•    Stays updated with UWGLC’s strategic goals, news, community investment activities, designation policies and governance.

•    Attends training and conferences as needed to maintain credentials and keep abreast of trends in philanthropy and non-profit organizations. 

•    Other duties as assigned by the President/CEO.

Works assigned schedule and exhibits regular and predictable attendance.  Works outside of normal schedule as required, meeting workload demands.  Scheduled to work some weekends and holidays.  Performs other related duties as required.


Direct supervision of the Marketing & Design Specialist, Donor Engagement Specialist, Volunteer Engagement Manager, interns and contract employees.  


Automobile, digital camera and video camera, computer, telephone, copier and other general office equipment.


Co-workers, general public, campaign volunteers, media and community representatives, business leaders, donors, members of the Board of Directors, key stakeholders and contract agencies.


The employee is exposed to normal office working conditions of moderate noise levels.  Employee is occasionally exposed to wet, humid or other outdoor weather conditions when setting up display booths and participating in community events.  While traveling to United Way public relation events, employee is exposed to travel conditions and typical road hazards.


Position incumbents performing essential duties and responsibilities of the job typically exhibit the following physical demands.  These physical demands are not, and should not be construed to be job qualification standards, but are illustrated to help United Way of Greater Lorain County, the employee and/or applicant identify where reasonable accommodations may need to be considered.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently sits for extended periods of time, and occasionally stands and walks.  The employee regularly exhibits digital dexterity when entering data into computer.  Vision demands include close, relatively detailed vision when focusing on a computer screen.  Employee converses verbally with others in person and by telephone.  The employee reaches with hands or arms, stoops, kneels, crouches or crawls when setting up and moving UWGLC booths.  The employee occasionally lifts varying weights of up to ten (10) pounds when moving files, boxes, equipment and supplies and up to twenty-five (25) pounds when transporting and setting up display booth.


Knowledge of: relationship-based fundraising; fundraising campaigns; donor and volunteer engagement; marketing; journalism; media relations; public relations; public speaking; local and regional newspapers, radio and television; social media; multi-media production; printing and production planning; health and human services systems; budget administration; special events planning; computer software; database administration.

Ability to:  develop and maintain effective working relationships; handle sensitive inquiries from and contacts with officials and general public; maintain and promote good public relations; maintain confidentiality of non-public or sensitive information; work independently demonstrating initiative; exhibit flexibility in work schedule and job tasks; coordinate multiple activities and tasks; originate correspondence; maintain accurate and complete work records.

Skill in:  excellent verbal and written communication; writing, editing and proofreading; building and cultivating relationships; operating standard office equipment; maintaining good public relations; application of job software programs including desktop publishing; planning, scheduling and organizing work; computer publication design; marketing techniques; general typing.


Required knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position are 7 to 10 years (or an appropriate combination of experiences as listed below) of progressive responsibilities including fundraising, event planning, public speaking, and relationship building, excellent writing skills, and a demonstrated ability to learn new software. Experience with donor databases, WordPress, MobileCause, Salesforce, and/or Airtable preferred. Proactive communications, problem-solving skills and supervisory experience are a must.

An appropriate combination of experiences that demonstrate the required knowledge, skills and abilities might include education, training, coursework, and work experience.

Ability to document identify and employment eligibility within three (3) days of original appointment as a condition of employment in compliance with Immigration Reform and Control Act requirements.
