Marketing and Engagement Strategist

POSITION: Marketing & Engagement Strategist

REPORTS TO:  Vice President of Organizational Development

DATE: October 2021 





OBJECTIVE:  Indiana United Ways is a membership association serving 40 United Ways working across Indiana counties.  The Marketing & Engagement Strategist is charged with building exemplary relationships with members; working closely with members to develop and implement integrated communications/marketing plans that function across multiple platforms, including digital; support the creation and execution of volunteer and donor engagement strategies; proffer technical assistance to members to ensure brand compliance and brand lift; and assist in the creation of member satisfaction assessments and communiques.


RESPONSIBILITIES: Above all else, this key position is responsible for promoting and preserving strong relationships with member United Ways and acting as their “marketing and engagement consultant in residence.” Accordingly, this position will initiate, guide, and implement a comprehensive range of activities that strengthen the ability of local United Ways to build brand equity and to attract and engage stakeholders for the sake of amplifying revenue.  The Communications & Engagement Strategist is also responsible for ensuring overall brand compliance; creating essential collateral and communications materials; and supporting the development of communications-related policies and procedures.


Central Functions: 


Membership Support Services (65% of time)

  • Assist LUWs in developing integrated communications and marketing plans
  • Evaluate and advise local United Way on tools/capacity gaps related to communications/marketing and volunteer engagement
  • Provide training to LUWs and their Boards on best-in-class marketing/communications and volunteer engagement
  • Support change management communications training, particularly for merging United Ways or those involved in transformation
  • Educate members about and lead efforts to engage members in the effective utilization of digital and new media platforms
  • Create social media content
  • Provide basic graphic design services
  • Assists members with developing fundraising themes, key messages, and product positioning
  • Design and negotiate cross-promotions and sponsorship packages; provide grant writing assistance
  • Fulfill fee-for-service contracts with members


Network Communications and Engagement (20% of time):

  • Produce IUWs member communications, including newsletter, reports, and membership marketing collateral
  • Assist with website updates and maintains a repository of pertinent member resources
  • Highlight best practices and innovations from the field
  • Measure and report performance of all marketing and engagement campaigns
  • Represent IUW on a state and national level where appropriate
  • Organize cross-market seminars, webinars, and forums


Administrative (15% of time):

  • Coordinate effective communications trainings and assist in the development of communications protocols for staff
  • Work cross-functionally to provide a marketing/communications/engagement point of view across departments
  • Administer and analyze the results of IUW’s member satisfaction assessments
  • Intern supervision from time to time




The work of the Marketing & Engagement Strategist is complex as this position must educate, engage, challenge, and collaborate on multiple levels and with audiences with varying degrees of understanding of (and experience with) public and media relations; marketing; change management and crisis communications; digital and new media; volunteer recruitment, retention, and engagement; and fundraising. The Marketing & Engagement Strategist will work with member C-Suite and local marketing/communications/engagement staff primarily in a consultant/coach capacity; however, this position may also perform local staff functions or execute on a fee-for-service contract from time to time.  This position requires an adeptness at

quickly identifying needs, resources, and gaps to develop workable solutions that are appropriate for each United Way’s size and capacity.  In that respect, the Marketing & Engagement Strategist should be equally prepared for high-level strategy development and brass-tacks execution.  This position also requires a high tolerance for member-defined KPIs (rather than prescribed), a willingness to stretch beyond one’s area of expertise, and the desire to undertake on-going professional development.




Experience, Skills and Education:


  • Prior consulting background is a must
  • Expertise in marketing/communications, particularly through digital and new media, is a must:
    • e-mail/SMS
    • paid social
    • search, display and native advertising
    • Adobe Suite
    • Salesforce Marketing Cloud
  • Must have strong working knowledge of volunteer engagement techniques and principles
  • Prior non-profit experience is preferred.  Prior membership association experience a plus
  • Must have working knowledge of fundraising techniques and principles
    • Grant writing experience a plus
  • Basic graphic design experience
  • Experience with designing training programs, including an understanding of adult learning epistemology
  • Strong public speaker with the ability to influence
  • Strong editor/proofreader
  • Ability to both think strategically and execute on tactics independently and as part of a team
  • Strong project management skills
  • Master’s Degree (preferred) in communications, marketing, public relations, organizational communications, journalism, information and communications sciences, or other applicable field of study. Bachelor’s Degree in an applicable field of study + experience also considered.




Physical Demands/Work Environment: 


  • In-state (up to 2 days/week) and occasional out of state travel may be required as member

     needs dictate; access to own transportation and a valid driver's license is necessary 

  • Periodic work outside of normal business hours
  • Moderate level of stress from tight deadlines and multiple project deadlines
  • Moderate level of mental and/or visual fatigue and/or eyestrain may result from looking at a computer screen for extended periods of time
  • Employee is regularly required to sit, stand, reach, communicate and listen for extended periods of time
