Position Title:  Manager of Childhood Success
Childhood Success Program Service Area:  Bland, Buchanan, Carroll, Dickenson, Floyd, Giles, Grayson, Lee, Montgomery, Pulaski, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, Wise, Wythe Counties and the Cities of Bristol, Galax, Norton, and Radford
Type:  Full-Time, Exempt
Pay Scale: $50,000 - $60,000 Annually
Reports to:  Director of Childhood Success

Purpose of the Position:

Reporting to the Director of Childhood Success, the Manager of Childhood Success will manage, coordinate, and deliver United Way of Southwest Virginia’s (UWSWVA) Childhood Success initiatives in collaboration with community partners.  The Manager of Childhood Success supervises Childhood Success Coordinators within their assigned geography.  The Manager of Childhood Success serves as the Direct Responsible Individual (DRI) for specific projects, and supports other initiatives as determined by availability of funding and guidance from the Director of Childhood Success in support of the Childhood Success Department at UWSWVA.

Areas of Responsibility:     (Other duties may be assigned)

  • Manage assigned portfolio of grants and initiatives to ensure the goals and objectives are met on time and within budget.
  • Supervise assigned Childhood Success staff.
  • Participate in appropriate external committees and be the primary point of contact with key stakeholders, other funders, education institutions, and governments for the purposes of information exchange and capacity building support, and to promote UWSWVA’s various initiatives and investments for supporting childhood success.
  • Plan and manage implementation of projects of varying size and complexity.
  • Convene and/or coordinate and facilitate quarterly Regional Coalition meetings in collaboration with the Childhood Success Leadership team.
  • Work with Director of Community Impact to account for all expenditures and reporting to key stakeholders and investors for all initiatives in the Childhood Success Department.
  • Design and lead quarterly professional development sessions and/or learning communities.
  • Attend professional development related to, and maintain appropriate certifications for, project implementation.
  • Work in conjunction with UWSWVA’s Marketing & Communications Department to develop departmental materials and collateral.
  • Work in conjunction with Director of Community Impact to ensure fiscal requirements of assigned projects are followed and appropriately documented.

Job Relationships:

The Manager of Childhood Success reports to the Director of Childhood Success.  The Manager must maintain an ongoing working relationship with all staff of UWSWVA. The Manager should maintain working relationships with volunteers and strategic partners including non-profit executives, representatives of government, and educational institutions.

Educational and/or ExperienceBachelor's Degree or higher from accredited four-year college or university required; five (5) or more years of supervisory experience required and experience in an educational, nonprofit or social service organization preferred.  The ideal candidate will have a background in nonprofit management and/or early childhood education.  Preference will be given to candidates who have prior grants management experience, including budgeting and work plan development and implementation.  The candidate must have a proven track record of convening groups, leading effective meetings, and communicating with a wide range of individuals from varying backgrounds. 

Residency and TravelThe ideal candidate will live in the service area and be available to attend early morning, evening, and/or weekend meetings on a periodic basis, and should be able to travel independently throughout Southwest Virginia.

Language Skills - Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

Mathematical Skills - Ability to calculate figures and amounts and conduct basic accounting calculation such as proportions and percentages. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra. Comfort with calculation in Microsoft excel and use of spreadsheets.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations - Valid driver's license and automobile insurance required. Additional credentials related to childhood success preferred (ex. CLASS reliable, ITERS, etc.).  Access to the internet at home required.
