Overview:

United Way of Greater Yankton fights for the education, financial stability, and health of every person in our community.

The Executive Director is the key management leader of the United Way of Greater Yankton, establishing a vision for Community Impact that is achieved through the efforts of a diverse team of high-performing leaders, staff, and volunteers alike.

The Executive Director is the Chief Mobilizer; s/he leverages the power of relationships and networks, and works across private, public, and corporate sectors to improve conditions of the community. The Executive Director possesses a high level of broad business and management skills and is effective at generating resources and financial support for the organization.

The Executive Director is dedicated to shared and measurable goals for the common good – creating, resourcing, scaling, and leveraging strategies for broad investment and impact.

The Executive Director is the steward of the brand and understands his/her role in growing and protecting the reputation of United Way. S/he is responsible for building trust in United Way and its relevance in the community. S/he values network and strives to leverage United Way’s breadth of community presence, relationships, and strategy.

Summary of Position:

Responsible for the organization’s overall management, understands and is committed to carrying out the mission, provide fundraising leadership and support, and serve as the agency’s key representative for community functions and in building relationships with persons at all levels of the public, private and voluntary sectors.

Essential Functions: 

Organizational Management and Administration

Formulate and recommend policies or policy changes to the Board

Evaluate services provided in accordance with goals and standards established by UWVS

Implement Board policies

Fulfill the directives of the UWVS By-Laws, Policy, and Procedures

Maintain or direct the maintenance of the facility

Foster development among UWVS volunteers, staff, human service providers, business leaders and the community

Supervise, direct and evaluate job performance of paid and volunteer staff

Review the procedures manual for staff and comprehensive training package for volunteers annually

Identify priorities in health and human services

Report to the various constituencies regularly

 Perform related duties as required but not articulated

Fiscal Integrity and Accountability of Operations

Work with committees and agencies to set goals and articulate fiscal needs

Disburse funds as budgeted or needed

Monitor collection of funds

Prepare annual budget for physical center and operations for Board approval

Demonstrated ability to manage an organization’s budget

Prepare monthly financials and applicable reports for Board review and approval

Direct and participate in fundraising activities

Prepare information for annual audit

Execute all legal obligations

Public Relations/Community Relations/Marketing

Increase awareness of the ability to respond to diverse needs within the greater Yankton community

Collaborate with leaders of other funding organizations

Act as clearinghouse for volunteer recruitment, referral, or placement of volunteers

Enhance public relations through personal contact (written and verbal), literature, and media

Make presentations in order to educate, provide information about UWVS, and promote voluntary giving

 Maintain highly effective client relations under all UWVS programs

Provide overall direction in fundraising

Motivate others to get involved in fundraising activities for UWVS

 Build relationships with local government leaders

Serve on appropriate community service committees

Significant representative with state and national human services and public policy activities

Board Relations

 Work with Nominating (Executive) Committee in recruitment and board member selection

Administer orientation and training program for new Board members

Take and keep all minutes of Board meetings

Develop and recommend to the Board short-range and strategic plans for UWVS

Review and interpret trends in the field(s) of United Way

Communicate with the Board and maintain appropriate relations with Board members and committee members.

Qualifications:

Experience

Four years of supervisory or managerial experience in a non-profit organization is preferred

Prior nonprofit and development/fundraising experience with proven results

Past success working with a board of directors

Knowledge of people, culture, issues and relationships in the greater Yankton area and South Dakota

Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office / Quickbooks / eCimpact

Skills

Demonstrated strength in directing a nonprofit operation and driving long term strategy

Excellent managerial, organizational and team building skills

Strong public relations skills with the ability to engage a wide range of constituencies

High degree of financial literacy and knowledge of nonprofit budgeting and reporting requirements

Demonstrated success in building collaborative relationships with a broad range of partners, including community advocates, local service providers, key donors, and federal legislators

Superior written and verbal communication skills including presentation skills

A demonstrated passion for finding innovative services to support human needs
