Position: Executive Director

Reports to: United Way of Southwestern Oregon Board of Directors

United Way of Southwestern Oregon was founded in 1961 to provide an organized way to address the unique

needs of people living on the southern Oregon coast. United Way fights for the health, education and financial

stability of every person in Coos and Curry Counties. We focus on these three areas because, together, they are the

foundation of success for every child, every individual, every family, every community, and every economy. We

know that health, education, and financial stability are interconnected and, when strategically addressed, conspire

to create communities where all people thrive.

We are a local fundraiser and a local funder. The money we raise here, stays here, and serves this community. We

strategically invest by funding programs administered by the local organizations that provide the best services in

our three focus areas. We are a convener, bringing together community leaders, local governments, other funders,

non-profits, and stakeholders, to collaborate and coordinate our efforts to effectively address our most complicated

social issues.

The organization serves as the fiscal sponsor for local organizations, including South Coast Health Equity Coalition

and Southern Oregon Coast Pride.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The major responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

Community Impact

The Executive Director is responsible for the overall impact of United Way of Southwestern Oregon (UWSO) on the

community, with emphasis on increasing its capacity to drive the impact agenda. The Executive Director works

closely with the Board to craft and adapt strategy to achieve increased impact, including raising the funds to

support it. They will establish and build relationships with top leaders in the community, including those

representing business, government, and non-profit sectors.

Resource Development

The Executive Director is charged to drive key results in fundraising; to identify, cultivate, and solicit prospective

donors and partners; to leverage personal and professional contacts and relationships into fundraising

opportunities; to promote a culture of fundraising in the organization, both at the staff and board level.

Strategic Management

The Executive Director serves as the principal resource to the Board of Directors and its key committees and gives

strong direction in policy formulation and interpretation. They partner with the Board of Directors to craft

organizational goals and develop strategies to ensure that they are achieved.

Organizational Management

The Executive Director is accountable for building and leading high-performing teams, ensuring all teams are

aligned and collaborating to achieve results. They maintain accountability for the operational and fiscal integrity of

the organization within policies set by the Board of Directors. They oversee the UWSWO’s fiscal sponsorships,

providing fiduciary oversight, financial management, and other administrative services as required. The Executive

Director assesses organizational capacity to implement strategies and identify gaps in systems and manages

organizational spending, monitors budget compliance, and mitigates financial risks; and ensures that United Way of

Southwestern Oregon goals of inclusiveness and diversity among staff and volunteers are met.

REQUIREMENTS

5 years of management experience in a non-profit, corporate, or public sector organization which included the.

coordination of leadership, partnership building, and collaboration. Experience working with a Board of Directors is

preferred.

Oregon driver’s license.

Work authorization: United States

Demonstrates broad knowledge, passion and perspective regarding Coos and Curry counties’ community issues and

the unique role that United Way plays in building a positive, sustainable quality of life for all.

Demonstrates the ability to communicate and effectively interact with people across cultures, ranges of ability,

genders, ethnicities, and races. Demonstrates knowledge of the history of discrimination in America, particularly as

it relates to race and racism, and how this history has led to disparities experienced by marginalized communities

such as BIPOC, people with disabilities, LGBTQ+ communities, and others. Demonstrates the ability to successfully

deliver culturally responsive services.

Ability to support the development and communication of a compelling and inspired vision among Board

Members, donors, staff, volunteers, service providers, business leaders and the community.

Demonstrates strong listening, writing, public speaking and presentation skills.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

40 hours per week requiring occasional evening and weekend work.

Hybrid work environment. Remote workers will be provided reasonable accommodation for home office setup.

This position is expected to travel regularly to meetings in Coos and Curry Counties.

Demonstrates proven fiscal management and responsibility to properly oversee an organization’s budget and build

trust in the organization’s ability to act as a reliable steward of its finances.

Demonstrates the Ability to manage multiple fiscal sponsorships and organizational partnerships.

Demonstrates drive for accomplishment and getting results through strong leadership and collaboration. Also

demonstrates ability to measure results with effective metrics.

Experience with Individual and special event fundraising.

Experience with social media, marketing, and public relations communications.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS


• Salaried exempt position $80,000-$90,000 annually DOE

• Other benefits include vacation accrual starting at 2-3 weeks/year, sick leave, and other leave options

allowable under Oregon law.
