Reports to: Education Manager
Department: Community Impact
Classification: Part -Time (30hrs/week; $28/hr)
Date: ASAP – June 30th
Program Description:
Over the last 4 years United Way California Capital Region (UWCCR) has supported early childhood literacy in 17 Sacramento area schools. We provided in school tutors who worked closely with small groups of students to increase their fluency and reading grade level. We saw amazing success in providing this support--62% of students increased their reading grade level, and we built wonderful partnerships with schools. After COVID-19 shut schools down in March it became clear that the school climate was going to change. To that end, our organization has decided to respond to this changing educational climate and address the needs of schools, students and families that have emerged due to COVID-19 and Distance Learning.
In order to continue to support early childhood literacy and also help increase student engagement, UWCCR has decided to pilot a program, STARS, utilizing BookNook software in the Robla School district and several housing communities throughout Sacramento that allows for children to get the 1x1 tutor experience virtually. STARS powered by BookNook is a program that brings tutors and students together through video chat to work on vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency skills. Through this collaborative partnership with UWCCR, low income housing sites, and schools, we are hoping to not only support early childhood literacy but also provide a secondary adult mentor that can help engage students and ease some of the burden off families. After a successful pilot, UWCCR would like to expand the programing to our other school partners (we are partnered with 5 school districts and 17 schools total) and housing community partners in Sacramento and Yolo Counties.
Initially we plan to reach at least 100 families/students in combination of the Robla School District and partner housing communities.
