Position Title: Director, Volunteer Engagement
Division: Resource Development

General Summary:
The Director, Volunteer Engagement supports and advances United Way of Southern Maine’s (UWSM) mission by initiating and leading volunteer engagement with individuals in UWSM’s footprint to advance United Way’s and the community’s long-range vision, Thrive2027. This role is responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing in-person and digital volunteer strategies. At a high level, this position is responsible for ensuring a robust array of volunteer engagement opportunities in support of growing UWSM’s annual campaign.

This is a great opportunity for a results-oriented self-starter to collaborate with and inspire corporate partners to engage their employees through United Way-led volunteer opportunities. The successful Director creates a consistent, positive volunteer experience that defines United Way’s brand. The successful Director identifies and prioritizes volunteer engagement strategies, particularly those directly advancing Thrive2027, with key corporate partners, including prospective corporate partners, with the ultimate objective of growing United Way’s fundraising campaign through deeper donor and volunteer engagement. In addition, this person serves on the organization’s Strategic Planning team.

Essential Functions:
General Volunteerism
• Responsible for innovating, leading, and managing United Way’s volunteer engagement program and partnerships by identifying, creating, and promoting a continuum of volunteer engagement that aligns with community-wide and organizational goals, including strategic and highly relational projects.
• Strengthens internal volunteer procedures to ensure volunteers have a positive experience with United Way and its associated community partnerships and initiatives; utilizes relationship-building efforts to maximize retention by working across the organization to ensure utilization of volunteer management best practices, including recruiting, orienting, and recognizing volunteers.
• Provides guidance and support to Corporate Engagement Team on communicating the overall value and impact corporate volunteerism has in the community as part of a comprehensive illustration of the value that United Way partnership has with individual companies.
• Supports UWSM’s giving circle program managers and the Corporate Engagement Team on efforts to engage corporate resource/affinity groups at specific accounts.
• Collaborates with the Marketing team to elevate UWSM’s profile as the premier non-profit of choice for businesses to help their employees engage their local community.
• Establishes and maintains relationships with key leaders at corporate partners involved with the placement and coordination of internal employee volunteers in the community.
• Establishes and maintains relationships with community organizations, including funded partners, to assess volunteer needs.
• Oversees management of appropriate online volunteer management system to ensure reliable and accurate data for post-project evaluation and results measurement.
• Evaluate and continuously improve the volunteer program using data and qualitative feedback.
• Identifies, applies for, and manages all corporate pass-through grants (including those from HandsOn Network/ Points of Light and/ or United Way Worldwide).

Strategic Volunteerism
• Advises Corporate Engagement Team and Lead Corporate Partners (LCPs) on strategic/signature volunteer engagement strategies that support overall growth plans for the Campaign and advance Thrive2027.
• Provides ongoing training support to Corporate Engagement Team on positioning and selling existing strategic volunteer opportunities to inspire expanded promotion with UWSM corporate partners.
• Works closely with the Community Impact team to lead the development and implementation of any signature engagement opportunities that advance the three Thrive2027 goals.
• Ensures tracking mechanisms are in place using UWSM’s CRM system to capture and report on all strategic volunteerism efforts.
• Coordinates ongoing annual training support to all UWSM staff who manage volunteers to ensure the best possible experience for both the volunteer and the staff member in a way that strengthens United Way’s volunteer-led business model.
• Maintains a repository of future strategic volunteers to inform recruitment efforts with specific volunteer committees (e.g., Thrive2027 Goals Cabinets, Campaign Cabinet).
• Supports volunteer engagement opportunities aimed at retirees.

On-Demand (one-time) Volunteerism
• Responsible for ensuring UWSM LCPs, select growth accounts, and new business prospects have year-round volunteer engagement opportunities that align with their CSR interests in the community.
• Creates and supports a flexible menu of one-time and recurring volunteer opportunities as year-round engagement opportunities for LCPs.
• Acts as player coach with on-demand opportunities depending on the time of year and scope of work. This role may be the overall project manager in partnership with the Corporate Engagement Team.
• Ensures a clear and collaborative process for how UWSM responds to and acts on inquiries and requests for volunteer engagement projects with clear roles and responsibilities for staff and partners.
• Increases cross-corporate partner volunteer projects across the year.
• Oversees the planning, development, and execution of “high profile” community volunteer events (e.g., Day of Action, Family Volunteer Day(s), and National Volunteer Week) with partners and giving circles.

Required Education:
Bachelor’s degree or foreign equivalent. Significant volunteer management or fundraising experience or equivalent considered in lieu of degree.

Required Skills and Experience:
• Creative ability to develop, solicit and bring volunteer ideas from concept to completion.
• Willingness to act as player-coach, taking the lead when necessary.
• Proven mastery of facilitating influential volunteers in a lead and support capacity.
• Commitment to the mission of United Way of Southern Maine.
• Demonstrate UWSM’s Core Values in all internal and external interactions.
• Demonstrated success working independently and with a team.
• Focused project management experience with an applied emphasis on customer relationship building.
• Demonstrated ability to influence others to invest in UWSM community impact strategies and programs.
• Demonstrated understanding of volunteerism, the nonprofit sector, and the best practices, policies, and standards of volunteer management. Ability to put this understanding to use effectively.
• Superb communication skills (written and verbal) with an ability to effectively relate with a diverse group of individuals or organizations. Effective listening skills are a must.
• Proven ability to successfully execute a plan utilizing strategic thinking.
• Commitment to excellence and proactive problem solver.
• Solid computer skills (familiarity with customer relationship management systems preferred).
• High-energy, outcome-focused individual with a positive “can-do” outlook who can manage ambiguity and change.
• Natural aptitude to share knowledge and teach others according to various learning styles.
• Ability to prioritize and handle multiple projects simultaneously, strong self-motivation, and work independently with limited supervision.
• Event management experience.

Work Environment:
This job operates in a professional office environment. Therefore, this role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. This position regularly requires long hours and weekend work.  At UWSM, we are focused on creating connections within the Southern Maine community. Our current hybrid model is focused on doing just that, requiring our team members to spend 16 hours per week creating connections. Examples of creating connections include office time, external meetings/gatherings, training, volunteer engagement events, and even a cup of coffee with an internal/external partner. 

Travel:
Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected. Local travel in Southern Maine is expected as a routine function of volunteer project management during the business day with stakeholders.
