The Michigan United Way Shared Services Partnership is seeking a dynamic and strategic Director of Human Resources to provide senior-level and hands on leadership for the shared services HR team, supporting and building a collaborative HR structure across a group of eight United Way organizations in Michigan (Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo/Battle Creek, Capital Area, Jackson, Washtenaw, Southwest MI, Midland, and Montcalm/Ionia). We are seeking candidates with a proven track record of developing and implementing strategic human resource initiatives, building relationships, and achieving shared goals.  The Director of Human Resources is a key member of each organization’s Leadership Team and will work with the teams in supporting and advising on diversity, equity & inclusion strategies, organizational culture initiatives, and continuous improvement activities.

This role has the unique opportunity to build human resources structure across multiple groups, with the goal of creating consistency and efficiency, while supporting the unique culture and needs of each organization. The ideal candidate will be a strategic thinker with a collaborative management style and strong business acumen; a person capable of leading and mentoring the existing HR team and cultivating a culture of services and excellence among United Way employees and partners.

DUTIES

This position provides strategic direction and oversight to a comprehensive array of human resources functions specifically in the areas of workforce planning; talent management; cultural cultivation; training and development; employee relations; rewards and recognition; organizational development; change management; and regulatory compliance.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Partners with the Leadership Teams at regional United Ways to progress the strategic vision of a Shared Services HR model and continue to bring the vision to life.
  • Leads a shared services team that is responsible for day-to-day human resources needs for all partner organizations.
  • Creates both strategic and standardized HR processes as needed.
  • Functions as a strategic business advisor to leadership regarding key organizational, management, diversity, equity & inclusion, and human resources initiatives and issues.
  • Ensures that the United Way culture is embedded into the foundation of each organization, is anchored in best practices of diversity, equity & inclusion, and that it is understood and exemplified by every team member.
  • Develops and/or updates guidelines, policies and procedures that align with the organization’s emphasis on supporting and cultivating a positive work culture and continuing to grow employee engagement.
  • Develops comprehensive strategic recruiting and retention plans to meet the human resources needs of each organization, including diversity recruiting priorities.
  • Leads the training and development efforts across the organizations, focusing on critical leadership skills and competencies for the future of the organizations as well as assuring both leaders and employees understand human resources process and procedures.
  • Coaches and counsels team members as needed to facilitate communication and proactively resolves employee relations matters as guided by the organizations’ values, policies, and procedures.
  • Ensures compliance with human resource legal requirements.
  • Designs, implements, and monitors the organizations’ performance management processes and systems.
  • Ensures that all systems and processes uphold employee confidentiality. 

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in Human Resources and at least five years of experience leading and/or consulting on a variety of human resources initiatives. Human resources certification and experience working with non-profits is preferred.

This position requires a thorough understanding of human resources best practices and the ability to lead collaborative partners through change. Additional qualifications include:

  • Outgoing personality that works well with a variety of people, building relationships and shared goals across people and organizations.
  • Ability to lead and manage complex projects/bodies of work decisively and with flexibility.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and practice of the key concepts and strategies needed to embed equity, diversity, and inclusion into an organization.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience providing coaching and mentoring to individuals and teams.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of highly sensitive information.
  • Strong working knowledge of MS Office as well as HRIS.
