Director, Grants and Development Operations

United Way of Greater Kansas City, is searching for a Director of Grants and Development Operations who believes that solutions to complex social problems are possible when Kansas Citians are united for transformative change. Primary responsibility is to is to steward the investment of resources raised through United Way’s annual campaign and beyond through strategic grantmaking and collaborative community partnerships.

OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES

Grant Research, Writing and Management

  • Lead grant acquisition efforts for the organization and internal programs, including prospecting grant opportunities (in partnership with Community Impact Staff), preparing grant proposals and managing follow-up reporting and grant compliance.
  • Provide leadership for the development of a strategic grant strategy, including an annual grant calendar, inventory of grant opportunities, and prioritizing of grant opportunities in support of United Way initiatives.

Fiscal Oversight, Grantmaking and Donor Engagement:

  • Provide grant writing support for internal programs and United Way community partners, including prospecting grant opportunities (in partnership with Community Impact Team), preparing grant proposals, and managing follow-up reporting and grant compliance.
  • Partner with UWGKC (United Way of Greater Kansas City) Development team members in the cultivation of relationships with key UWGKC donors whose interests align United Way community impact work.
  • Make effective use of written communications to achieve goals related to grant making and community collaboration work, ensuring that stakeholders stay apprised of the organization’s work.
  • Provide grant writing support for programs including prospecting grant opportunities, preparing grant proposals, and managing follow-up reporting and grant compliance.
  • Develop and execute strategies to produce an increase in donors and donor retention in portfolio of accounts aligned with the established objectives of the institution.
  • Develop and execute strategies to produce an increase in annual revenue in overall portfolio of accounts aligned with the established objectives of the organization.
  • Conducting post-grant award stewardship, including review of annual progress reports and aggregation of grantee outcome data.

Relationship Management:

  • Serve as primary contact for UWGKC with leadership at area foundations and public funding agencies (as well as national funders, when appropriate) to cultivate relationships, engage around funding opportunities and serve as point of contact on grant applications and post-award reporting.
  • Partner with UWGKC Development team members in the cultivation of relationships with key UWGKC donors whose interests align United Way community impact work.
  • Serve as an effective ambassador for United Way’s work by representing the organization in community-engaged roles beyond the position’s core duties, with an eye toward raising United Way’s profile in the community and fostering key relationships that may be leveraged in support of organizational goals.
  • In coordination with the United Way staff, maintain various organizational profiles used by media, funders and other stakeholders such as GuideStar and United Way Worldwide AgencyLink, and Charity Navigator

Donor Engagement & Operations:

  • Support organizational goals related to fundraising and donor engagement by effectively partnering with the Development team in the cultivation of, research around and stewardship of donor relationships at all levels.

Operational Excellence:

  • Primary responsibility is to is to steward the investment of resources raised through United Way’s annual campaign and beyond through strategic grantmaking and collaborative community partnerships.
  • Ensure effective achievement of departmental goals through consistently meeting deadlines, completing assignments with a high degree of accuracy and demonstrating a positive, proactive and solutions-focused approach when fulfilling key responsibilities.
  • Make effective use of written communications to achieve goals related to grantmaking and community collaboration work, ensuring that both internal and external stakeholders stay apprised of United Way’s work.
  • Demonstrate a high capacity to work independently.
  • Regularly assess progress to goals, identifying what drives and impedes progress.
  • Work to develop solutions to address gaps.
  • Contribute to building a positive, results-oriented, donor-centric culture that delivers upon UWGKC’s mission-driven strategic, operational and financial objectives.
  • Create, lead and manage community impact focused special events, as needed.
  • Create and lead staff trainings as needed.

EDUCATION/REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in a field of study related to social work, education, government/public policy or other field related to health and human services.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Three – five years of successful experience, preferably in the nonprofit, education or government sectors.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, a strong reputation for integrity and professionalism, demonstrated intellectual curiosity, ability to resolve conflict constructively, strong performance management and evaluation capabilities including the willingness and ability to ensure accountability.
  • Demonstrated leadership in relationship building and management is critical. The ability to think strategically and create commitment to fostering an inclusive environment consistent with UWGKC’s focus on diversity and inclusion.
  • Must have the ability to prepare, explain, and monitor performance, manage a diverse group of donors and partners, manage projects and workload
  • Engage constructively with the other members of the UWGKC team and manage up and across functional departments to ensure grants and associated reporting are happening on time and to a high level of excellence
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Applications
  • CRM experience required.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive data.
